15/06/2024

Hey everyone, summer is in full swing so I want to make a short psa about temperature safety for bringing animals from (or to!) expos or anywhere else.

Please NEVER leave animals in a car unattended, ever. Period. Never. It doesn't matter how nice the temperatures outside are, temperatures in a car can soar quickly. Most reptiles can tolerate cooler temperatures for much, much longer than they can tolerate being too hot.

For a lot of reptiles, being left in 100+ degrees without the ability to get away is a death sentence in under 15 minutes. For some others, like crested geckos, cave geckos, and other cool rather species, fatalities can occur in just 15 minutes at 90+.

Please think ahead and if your show pickups will be exposed to heat for more than 10 minutes (less when temperatures are over 90 - heat sickness sets in quickly), consider using an insulated grocery bag, cooler, or something similar, especially when used in conjunction with phase packs and potentially ice packs (but never in direct contact with your animals!), which can be used to keep animals comfortable on your way home.

Keep your animals safe! Just because they're reptiles does not mean they love or want to be exposed to extreme heat with no means to escape it.

As an added tip, also make sure to absolutely never open your animals in your car either. Always wait until you are home and in a safe place before opening your new animals. 🙂
