Christopher Robin and his stuffed bear Winnie-the-Pooh
In lieu of the 90th anniversary of A.A Milne's publication of his first story about Winnie-the-Pooh, here is a brief telling of the real-life bear from Canada who inspired the character we know & love.
92 years ago, in a small town named White River, Ontario, Canada, a little black bear cub became an orphan after a hunter shot its mother. During this time, World War I, people bought and sold bears as pets. A lieutenant from England, Lieutenant Colebourn (pictured below), was stationed in this small Ontario town and bought this black bear cub for twenty dollars. He named the bear Winnipeg, or "Winnie" for short. After being stationed somewhere in Europe, Colebourn wanted to bring his bear with him, so he made a deal with the London Zoo. As the Canadian black bear cub was on display here, he touched many hearts, including those of author A.A. Milne and his son Christopher Robin. Christopher Robin (pictured below with Winnie) renamed the bear Winnie-the-Pooh. The bear inspired Milne to write children's stories revolving around Winnie-the-Pooh and his son. On October 14, 1926, Milne's first book debuted in England and America, and the world has loved Winnie-the-Pooh ever since!
Today marks Winnie the Pooh's 90th anniversary! The original book was released this day, October 14, in 1926. To mark this special anniversary, Pooh welcomes a new character - a Penguin!
