Some of you have expressed concerns that the conversion table on the tool doesn't have enough granularity. We did this to match the label on "the other tool". First, keep in mind that the direct readout is the same as "the other tool", so no conversion is needed. Second, the Tyte One scale is physically twice as big, so you get more resolution. Third, if you do need to convert to Kg-force or lb-force, then you can use the label on the tool. Below you can see the full resolution conversion for every number on the scale. We often receive statements like "This is just a bike spoke tension gauge" or "It's even blue like some other bike spoke tension gauge". Frankly, this is no different than saying "I already have a screwdriver with yellow handle; this is just another screwdriver with yellow handle." Indeed, if all screws were the same, that would be correct. But you do need Flat and Phillips, big and small. So use the right tool for the right job. Use your blue spoke tension gauge for your bike, and use the Tyte One, with a different spring and different calibration, for your sailing shrouds. For more details go to www.tyte-tools.com

When the "Golden Standard" is not so golden... Most sailors seem to rely on the Loos gauge assuming it's perfect. While all tools are expected to have some tolerance error, these two examples show a significant departure from the expected reading. One, measuring in lb-force, should read "28" at 390 lb-force tension in a 1/8" cable. It actually reads "25". The other, measuring in kg-force, should read "28" at 190 kg-force in a 3mm cable. It actually reads "26". (Note that the digital readings are slightly higher because the tension goes up as you attach the tool. Also, if that was the actual tension, the Loos gauge should read higher, not lower.) In addition, these tools cannot be recalibrated, so you're stuck with an incorrect reading, and most of the time you won't even be aware of it. Caveat emptor!

This is the last chance to order the Tyte One sailing tension gauge at the Early Bird price on our Indiegogo campaign. While similar looking to other tension gauges, Tyte One was designed specifically for cables used in sail boat shrouds. It is also cheaper and easier to use than the competition, but provides the reading in the same scale, so there is no need to convert the scale reading. It works on cables from 2.5mm to 4mm (3/32" to 5/32"), ideal for C420s and J/22s

Just anecdotally... The other day a customer was upset that the Tyte One was not reading correctly since it was different than the Loos gauge. So we took both gauges, tightened a 3mm cable to 190Kg-f. A Loos gauge should have read "28", but this one year old gauge read "26" and now there is nothing we can do about it. The Tyte One read exactly "28" and it could have been recalibrated if it didn't. So lesson learned, just because the most common tool reads a certain way, it doesn't mean it's correct.

About Us | Tyte Tools In competitive sailing, a properly tuned boat is critical. One of the easiest, but most consequential adjustments is getting the right rake with the proper jib tension. The rake, or the angle of the mast, changes the intrinsic movements of the boat, and different wind conditions demand different rak...

Are you tired of paying too much for a Loos gauge to adjust the tension in the shrouds of your boat (420, 470, J20, J30, etc.)? Then we are working on a solution. By modifying a bike spoke gauge, we can offer a less expensive, easier to use, more accurate tension gauge. Right now we are in the prototype phase, but we'd love to hear from you. Are you a sailing club? How many would you need? How much would you be willing to pay (definitely less than a Loos gauge)? Anything else you'd like to share?
