Short recovery jog done early this morning before the heat cranks up and trying to wear Bert out before he melts.

He likes to bring me things, this is the cardboard he’s going to eat apparently….

Anyway! What’s on your weekend run plans? Trainin’ or racin’?

Another hot and dusty one out on the trails today!

How’s your week of running going so far?

As the temperatures go through the roof in the UK, it’s worth taking a step back and thinking about how this is going to affect your running.

Whilst your body will adapt to training in the heat the change in temperature will invariably slow you down. The longer the distance of your run, the greater the affect.

The table I’ve posted shows the recommended adjusted pace per mile for a variety of changes based on the ideal running temperature being 53 degrees F. (NB. Table by Magill et al, 2013)

You’ll notice the smaller temperature changes has very little effect and the more extreme temperatures will have a greater effect.

This is just a guideline and is down to individual tolerance levels along with the adaptations heat-training will have but is useful to keep in mind when planning your effort levels during training runs.

We’ll have a deeper dive into heat-training on my blog soon!

Ending a better week of training exploring Valencia isn’t a bad way to do it!

13 weeks to race day so the long endurance section of training is about to start and I’ll be focussing on going for longer, pacing + nutrition/hydration strategies.

And there it is….

A truly magnificent PB performance from in tough circumstances.

So pleased for Graham after the training that he’s gone through.

Huge good luck & happy running to who is on 1 mile loops for 100 miles and aiming for a new PB.

The hard work has been done I’m training and now it’s about managing the conditions and potentially monotony of the course.

It’ll definitely be an interesting day…..

Certainly feeling that today 😂

Hey-yo!

I’d love to hear what’s on your race calendar for this year….

Let me know in the comments below!

Personally I’m heading back for another crack at the Autumn 100 in October & giving myself plenty of time to get ready for race day 🏃🏻‍♂️

GC'S 100 Mile Adventure 30/05/2022

Hey folks, happy Monday to you!

Hope you've been having a good time of it.

I've just published a new blog post taking a real high-level look back at Graham Carter's training for the Autumn 100.

Every athlete's plan has to be individualised and focussed on helping them achieve their primary goal.

Looking back, there's maybe a few bits I would tweak from a coaching perspective but Graham nailed it on race day and I'm still buzzing from the experience.

Have a read and drop any questions/comments you've got below.

GC'S 100 Mile Adventure I’ve had the fortune to know Graham since I first started Ultra Running back in 2013, finding each other through Twitter. Having met in person at various races across the years I paced Graham in the second half of the South Downs Way 100 back in 2019 and it was from here that we struck a coaching ...

Had a good coaching catch-up with Steve this morning, who is currently working toward getting his fitness levels back to a place where he can run consistently for 2-3hrs at a time.

Due to some previous injuries one of the areas I’ve been encouraging him to work on is mobility and conditioning in the ankles and hips, through my ‘Session X’ platform.

As his running has increased in intensity, Steve has admitted the he’s struggled to fit these sessions in.

So this week we’re switching up priority and focussing on getting these supplementary workouts done.

Long-term these sessions are only going to help and will give Steve the base he needs to run consistently and injury free!

Happy 1yr coaching anniversary to my main man !

As well as establishing a fantastic coaching relationship, I’m honoured to call this man my friend.

His motivation, perseverance, bravery and sheer desire to succeed is unlike anything I’ve experienced before.

Being involved in Graham’s running at this point has taught me a lot, both professionally and personally, and I can not wait to see what comes next in our adventure together.

Legend.

Huge shout out and congratulations to Rob for a fantastic performance at , his first ever 10k.

Testament to the hard work and dedication he’s shown over the past year or so of training!

Just start….

After a great chat with last night, I’ve been left thinking a lot about the struggle of getting started.

For me today, it’s the overwhelm of what to post on social media.

When I took my first step on my first run it was the overwhelm of all of the information that I’d seen up to that point.

Where should I run? What shoes should I be wearing? How should it feel? How fast should run? What kit do I need? Where am I going? Garmin or Suunto (🤪)

Seemingly thousands of voices pointing me in a thousand different directions.

It was enough to make me question why I was doing what I was doing.

So since then I’ve tried to keep things as simple as possible.

And ultimately it comes down to just doing something as imperfect action is better no action!

So if today’s your first day of running or your thousandth, lace up your shoes and go.

You’ll learn more from doing than not.
