At the close, the index was down 116 points, or 1.18 per cent, at 9,796.
NEW DELHI: The Nifty50 index on Tuesday snapped a four-day winning streak and formed a Bearish Belt Hold pattern on the daily chart.
Such a pattern is characterised by the day’s open and high levels for the day is the same, which indicates that the bears dominated the bulls throughout the session. Analysts noted that the index has negated the formation of higher lows by slipping below the 9,880 level during the day.
The index now needs to hold above the 9,740 level to avoid any sharp correction. The recent high of 9,948 might prove to be the short-term top for the index in near term, they said.

At the close, the index was down 116 points, or 1.18 per cent, at 9,796.
“Tuesday’s fall more or less confirmed that the recent high of 9,948 on the index could be the top of the pullback attempt that was being made by the Nifty50 from the low of 9,685. Sooner than later, consolidation over the past 10 sessions shall pave the way for a breakdown below the 9,685 level, which shall unleash a renewed selloff on the index towards the 9,450 level,” said Mazhar Mohammad, Chief Strategist – Technical Research & Trading Advisory, at Chartviewindia.in.

Mohammad said if the index does not violate the 9,740 level in the next couple of sessions, the index might make a small pullback.
Ideally, one should go short by making use of that pullback with a stop loss at 9,957 for a positional target placed in the 9,500-9,450 zone.

Chandan Taparia of Motilal Oswal Securities said the index slipped below its 50-day exponential moving average.
"It is still respecting the rising support trend line that connects the swings lows of 9,075, 9,448 and 9,685 levels. If it sustains below 9,775, then fresh selling pressure could drag it towards 9,720 and 9,685 levels. Upside hurdles are seen at 9,850 and 9,880 levels,” he said.
Mohammad said one should short by making use of any pullback with a stop loss at 9,957 for a positional target placed in the 9,500-9,450 zone.
