Measurable strength and conditioning community done right โ
I recently attended the level 1 strength and conditioning workshop, and connected with people who Iโve looked upto in the industry for a long time .farmer, .khoury ,, as well as a new network of fitness professionals, and even bumped into a colleague from my first ever PT gig back in 2008,
It was so refreshing to be immersed in a movement that is on the forefront of innovation and results/science based programming
What has created is truly inspiring and he has built a team of geniuses who I was lucky enough to connect with all weekend
This was also my first flirtation back with high intensity strength and conditioning training since brain surgery, and it felt like home

TAKE THINGS ONE DAY AT A TIME
After brain surgery or a major trauma, your body needs time to recover, donโt put pressure in yourself to โhave toโ get better straight away - this was a mistake I made - all you gotta do is take things one day at a time

WHAT IS DYSPHAGIA?
DYSPHAGIA was an expected deficit caused by my brain surgery, simply because the location of the surgery was in the exact part of my brain that affects swallow - this was one of the most challenging deficits to overcome by far - I couldnโt eat or drink for 3 months, and still canโt do shots 3 years after surgery ๐

The reason I am holding up the number 1 in this photo is because this is a picture of me performing my number 1 passion
In my spare time I run fitness fundraisers to raise funds for those less fortunate than me
On Saturday and I put 5 awesome teams through a โSurvivor meets the Amazing Raceโ style fitness event we call The games, to raise funds for the NSW Flood appeal
We donate our spare time, networks and expertise to help other people
We have another fundraiser on Saturday July 2nd - Iโd love to see you there
More details to come
I was lucky enough to have a great chat with the multi talented, Jacqueline ( )across the weekend
As we wrapped up our chat she asked me โwhat piece of advice I would give to someone going through brain surgery recovery?โ
I answered with 3 pieces of advice
1๏ธโฃ no two peopleโs recovery journey will ever be the same - brain surgery and the way the brain responds post op can vary massively from person to person - donโt compare yourself to otherโs recovery journeys
2๏ธโฃ take things one day at a time - this was the best piece of advice I received from my Dad - donโt stress about the future, just worry about getting through today and creating a mini-milestone each day - thinking too far in the future can really overwhelm you
3๏ธโฃ always put things into perspective - sadly there will always be someone worse off than you, on days you donโt feel like doing your rehab or going for that walk, just think how lucky you are to be able to do so, and celebrate the things your body can do, as opposed to focusing on the things you โcanโtโ
Jacqueline is an insanely talented human and I am humbled to call her a mate - she is a mum of three, an author, a TV presenter, an entrepreneur, a media expert, a creator, an accredited nutritionist, womenโs health expert, she runs multiple businesses and is a truly caring soul (I am probably missing loads of things she does-apologies). She was one of the first people to reach out to me after brain surgery to go for a walk and a chat - things like that mean A LOT to me
Thanks Jac
Even out imbalances
With balance and coordination disorders like ataxia, where one side of the body is largely uncoordinated compared to the other, I have had great results following programs that contain both bilateral (both sides simultaneously) and unilateral movements (one side at a time), to develop base line strength and coordination as well as balance any overcompensations or deficits on the less coordinated side
โ๏ธ The bilateral exercise in the photos is the leg press (both legs at once)
โ๏ธ The unilateral exercise in the photos is the alternating row (one arm at a time)
On Saturday, with the help of over a dozen family, friends and loved ones, we put together a team fitness event fundraiser to help raise funds to alleviate some of the financial burden of my brain surgery on my family
At the exact same time, some incredible members of the Mill Park Leisure Centre (in Melbourne), who I recently connected with online, during our national 6 week challenge with (whom Iโve never met before), organised a 24 hour treadmill fundraiser, in secret, to help raise even more funds for my brain surgery!
They printed posters with quotes I would frequently use during the challenge , they designed a QR code which was linked to my go fund me page, they went live on Facebook, they organised runners who ran from midnight Friday to midnight Saturday (on a treadmill decorated in tinsel), where they ran over 143km as a collective, to raise funds for a guy they had never met in their lives
I am obviously floating on cloud 9, am super grateful, and blown away by the incredibly thoughtful nature of people who a couple of months ago were unknown random strangers - this has really restored my faith in the awesomeness of human beings! There really are some incredible people in this world
Since my fundraising efforts began, with the help of hundreds of people across dozens of platforms, we have managed to raise over 20 THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!!
I AM SO HUMBLED - that so many incredible people would take time out of their day, and money out of their wallets, to help me and my family
Words canโt described how truly honoured I am
THANK YOU ๐
This Saturday I take another step in my recovery journey as I return to my first passion project since brain surgery, itโs another fitness fundraiserโฆโฆand this time itโs actually for me

One thing I have noticed since brain surgery is that my fatigue levels are higher! After many discussions with other brain surgery patients I have come to realise that this is a commonly occurring new normal. My advice - listen to your body, if it needs rest, it needs rest ๐ค
Thereโs loads of exercises I canโt do anymore, but I like to focus on and be grateful for the ones I can
Since brain surgery I have developed deficits and a tremor in my left hand. It can sometimes randomly shake, and I struggle to use my left hand to carry or hold things
If I went to the bar and brought two beers, Iโd have to carry them back to the table one at a time, so I didnโt spill the one in my left hand EVERYWHERE
Last week I bought myself a Sega Master System, because I love retro gaming and I also want to improve the coordination and fine motor skills in my left hand - rehab perks
