"Hunting Lodge Nomad Souls – Tribal Warning Shot – The Harvest (Live 1984)
Winter Hill Recordings/S/M Operations WHR3LP008/SM09
It’s hard to believe that these Hunting Lodge recordings are 40 years old! It seems like yesterday that they were premiering for the first time at the Harrington Ballroom. OK, maybe not yesterday but definitely not 40 plus years!! To celebrate, the masterminds behind this project (Lon C. Diehl, Richard Skott, and Knox Mitchell) have assembled some of the best recordings of the band. This three-album set includes the album Nomad Souls, the Tribal Warning Shot 12” plus extras, and the incredible live compilation The Harvest, which was originally released on the Inner-X Musick label. All packaged in a deluxe book-type folder that is profusely illustrated.
The first album is a remastered version of the bands 1984 cult classic Nomad Souls. Hunting Lodge was at their creative peak and bursting with energy. They were in-between the first live cassette from 1982 and the edgier punk sound of 8-Ball in 1987 and you can hear that in the music. The sonic noise beginnings are starting to take shape. Nomad Souls was so good that SPK’s Graeme Revell reissued the album on the Side Effects label the following year. The Nomad Souls album really sounds nice and the sound is incredible.
The second album is the Tribal Warning Shot 12” plus extras. The original TWS 12” 4-track EP was released early in 1985 on S/M Operations (U.S.). The title track was remixed with drums added for a 12” 45 release on Normal Records (Germany) soon thereafter. This is the version that appears here (the original mix is included as a digital bonus track). A new remix of the 1983 7” “Night from Night” b/w “Untitled” is included, along with 2 tracks that appeared on compilation albums and one unreleased track. The tracks are a real treat as they have never been assembled in one place before and they flow nicely as well.
The third record is culled from the rare cassette-only release on Inner-X Musick called The Harvest. This was a fun tape to listen to back in the day. All the tracks except E.Q.T.P.M. from the Kansas City show are represented on this album but it is included as a digital bonus track. All the other tracks were culled from the Chicago and Detroit shows from the 1984 tour. The Detroit show bears the distinction of being the only time Roselle Williams (“The Wolf Hour”) sang live with the band. Included here are two previously unreleased tracks, one from Chicago and the other from Detroit. This is the first time these tracks have ever been released on vinyl and they sound absolutely amazing.
If you’re lucky enough to get the accompanying 28-page booklet, it is filled with illustrations by longtime HL friend and illustrator Tim M. Caldwell. Beautiful cutups and collage work that really enhances the music included on this set. The booklet also includes new images that have never been published before as well as new notes, lyrics, and essays by Lon C. Diehl.
If that wasn’t enough the digital bonus tracks include:
1) EQTPM (Live Kansas City, VFW Hall #18, 11.02.1984)
2) Tribal Warning Shot (SM04 EP Version)
3) The Wolf Hour (Live San Francisco, Graffiti, 11.18.1984)
4) EnergyGuide (from Hear The Roar Of Mountains Vol. 2 comp)
5) Church Of Mike (Radio prank on Detroit DJ)

HL3.0 “Tribal”/Part 4: Drums
Fourth and FINAL in a series, explaining the rapid evolution of Hunting Lodge from WILL to Nomad Souls.
This period is referred to as “tribal” because of our growing fascination with neo-“tribal” drumming. Percussion showed up in earlier Hunting Lodge, but mainly in the form of metal; in the form of chunks, chains, sheets and 50 gallon drums. The main problem with 50 gallon drums is that they take up too much space in the back of a 1970 El Camino (Skott’s vehicle, and 1984 tour rig).
Since we weren’t interested in sitting down behind a drum kit, in 1983 James Stevenson constructed us a drum rig which consisted of a few sizes of tom-toms on tall legs that could be played while standing. These drums were used by Lon in all subsequent live shows, supplemented by roto-toms and the aforementioned (3) Instant Replay sampler pads (and later by Roland Octopad/samples).
The first (and title) track on Nomad Souls is a perfect example. All but the “floating voices” sample (which was an overdub) was a live improvisation after the recording of JOHN WRIGHT & THE YOUNG LOSERS WELCOME 1984 at the Harrington Ballroom in Port Huron, MI. A metronomic 808 beat was laid down, and while Lon and Steve Kisch played toms, Skott and Richard Kinnee manned dueling metal percussion. The live drums are big and repetitive at first, and then continue to morph throughout the song, sometimes threatening to fall apart and then gel back together in a different pattern. This can also be said about “Become a Commercial – Interrupting”, which was improvised utilizing the huge reverberation of the ancient basement of Full Moon Records (Port Huron) using mainly wooden 2x4’s slammed together.
Tribal Warning Shot’s “disco break” became the most prominent of these drum workouts. The vocals and Giorgio Moroder-esque sequencer give way in the middle of the track leaving only drums and percussive samples. The live drums were played by John Steinborn (brother of Paul, aka Shame,Exposure:), who also played the drum part in “The Wolf Hour”. When “Tribal Warning Shot” was later remixed for release as a 12” (Normal Records, Germany) Helmut Robison made his first appearance on a Hunting Lodge recording. His muscular playing can be heard mainly as the vocals/sequencer are reintroduced and his huge tom drop after the word “pierced” signals that he’s going to carry us on his back all the way to the finale.

HL3.0 “Tribal”/Part 3: Vocals
Third in a series, explaining the rapid evolution of Hunting Lodge from WILL to Nomad Souls.
Lon was the sole “vocalist” on early HL recordings. I use the word loosely, because these utterances consisted mainly of tortured wails, neo-Gregorian held notes with few instances of what could be identified as “singing”.
This changed in late ‘83 when we recorded the Night From Night 7”. Skott came to the studio with fully-formed verse, and then proceeded to sing the lyrics himself. Apparently during all that time at work (operating a factory’s screw machine) his mind had time to wander, allowing hours to ponder potential lyrics.
During this period Lon’s vocals and lyrics took a back seat to Skott’s, and the talents of two female vocalists were put to good use.
I would argue that the Nomad Souls version of “The Wolf Hour” (sung by 15 year-old Roselle Williams) and the single “Tribal Warning Shot” (sung by Skott & Trish Damon) were the creative pinnacle of this era of Hunting Lodge - perhaps for the whole life of the project. These both featured brilliant lyrics courtesy of Richard Skott Rusch [see also: "Born Of Fire"].

Previously on Hunting Lodge Confidential…
40 Years ago we were entering what could be thought of as Hunting Lodge's "Middle Era" ("Tribal era?"), which would heavily feature these primitive, gritty samplers (this one owned by Richard Skott). Our first recording to utilize one was 1983's NIGHT FROM NIGHT (original 7" version), which featured a crash/explosion sample synched/stacked over an 808 kick drum. Over the next couple of years we would lean on multiple Instant Replay units during the recordings of NOMAD SOULS and the TRIBAL WARNING SHOT EP as well as during live shows.
HL3.0 “Tribal”/Part 2: Instant Replay
Second in a series, explaining the rapid evolution of Hunting Lodge from WILL to Nomad Souls.
In 1983, the most interesting technology to enter music production was sampling. Electro pioneer John Robie (“Planet Rock”) produced Jenny Burton - “Black and White” LP (as well as the “Slack” 12") and Yello released the sampling touchstone - “You Gotta Say Yes to Another Excess”. We read that Boris Blank was using the Fairlight CMI and that purchasing one would cost as much as a house, and even its lower priced rival, the E-Mu Systems Emulator would run you the price of a new car. Our jobs at the time were factory worker and record store clerk, so the equipment budget was lean. Enter the Electro Harmonix Instant Replay.
We bought our first Instant Replay sampler in 1983. This gritty little unit could be played live with drumsticks on the included auxiliary pad or the sample could be triggered from an external source, such as the TR-808 [example: “Night From Night” 1983].
The 808 included THREE programmable triggers out, which meant that THREE Instant Replays would be THRICE as good, so we purchased two more [example: “God Loves The Rock Stars”].
After a base rhythm was recorded using the 3 triggered Instant Replays, we could then overdub by playing three units live with drumsticks, giving the piece a more "human" feel [example: “Soul-Vac”].
Another interesting feature of the Instant Replay was its ability to have its pitch controlled by the CV out from the Roland SH-09 synth. This would enable you to PLAY a sample using the keyboard. Interestingly, this pitch translation was erratic and you never quite knew what note would play as you went up and down the keys. This randomness could be exciting and yielded some interesting results [example: “Nomad Souls” (track 1)].
We dragged 3 Instant Replays / pads along with us on our 1984 tour. Since they did not include a way to store sounds onboard, a new sample would have to be recorded into them before every show. AND if they were accidentally unplugged during a performance, it would erase the recorded sample, rendering the unit(s) unusable once powered back on (unless you wanted to completely stop the show and re-record a sample into each). Unfortunately we learned this lesson the hard way after Lon tripped over his power cord at Graffiti in San Francisco.
Never forget the gaffers tape.

HL3.0 “Tribal” / Part 1: TR-808
The first in a series of posts which attempt to explain the rapid evolution of Hunting Lodge from WILL (1983) to Nomad Souls (1984). Examples refer to songs from the 3LP Nomad Souls/Tribal Warning Shot/The Harvest set.
Before (founding member) Carla Nordstrom moved to San Francisco in 1983, she traded equipment with Lon. He gave up his Roland G33 bass/GR-33B bass synth and in return received her Roland SH-09 Synthesizer, Roland CSQ-600 Digital Sequencer and most importantly the TR-808 Rhythm Composer.
The 808 quickly became the nerve center for Nomad Souls. Individual outputs for each percussive voice meant that you could add EQ/FX to one drum sound without affecting the others. Toms were distorted by the creamy overdrive of the (once again - Roland) PA-80 mixer, while the 808 bass could retain its purity [example: "Learn To Will II"].
Even more important were the 3 programmable trigger outputs. We could now program Boss DE-200 digital delays to repeat on any chosen beat. This rigid echo could also be held and then replayed in time as a sample. But by far the most revolutionary aspect of these outputs would be to trigger 3 Electro Harmonix Instant Replay samplers, thus giving us the rudimentary capabilities of an Akai MPC - 4 years before it was developed (albeit in strict step-sequencer form) [example: "Rhythm Cage"].
No sequenced synthesizer would appear on the Nomad Souls album, it was 100% TR-808 and samples.
(By the end of the year, Hunting Lodge recorded a single which DID use the sequencer/synth (and sync'd digital delay) - "Tribal Warning Shot". This and "Voodoo Eclipse", from The Harvest are the only sequenced synth pieces from this "tribal" era)

Nomad Souls @ 40 3LP Set test pressing sounds amazing. Modern consumer sound equipment is made to reproduce subsonic frequencies much more fully than what we had available to us in 1984. Listening to these tracks on vinyl AT VOLUME is one hell of an experience! (And I was THERE!) Subwoofers are MADE for the 808, and these albums have it in spades.
Pressing plant estimates that we should receive the finished sets mid-to-late May
