I opened Le Gamin in Soho in 1992 because I couldn’t find a café to stop by after work when I used to be a sous-chef executive kitchen on the 60th floor in lower Manhattan, an amazing midcentury space with incredible views, lots of art & furniture by Mies, we prepared meals and parties for then bank president David Rockefeller. In 2017 the building was sold and that space is now D. Meyers resto ! Hard to believe but there was nothing like a café in France back then downtown, a place to pop in for a quick coffee or apero. The closest thing was the Italian places on the stretch of Macdougal & Sullivan like the famous Figaro Café. We opened with no kitchens so we shipped a crêpe machine from France and toasted baguette sandwiches in toaster ovens . Many of our customers date back to this time and they’ve brought their friends, new babies who are now young adults, partners etc, we still get customers who make monthly treks out to Brooklyn, annual celebrations or visit when they come back to the city. We look forward to this next chapter of in Sharon CT 🇫🇷!. .

We open today at noon! When we first opened at 50 Macdougal Street in Soho July 1992, we served our café au laits in bowls as we used in France for petit dejeuner. The first weekend comes around and we had to rush home to search for any more bowls we could find as to our surprise the whole place was full and everyone wanted a “bowl of coffee”! Back then everyone laughed when I told them I wanted to open 8am because they said no one got up in Soho until noon....but in reality they just didn’t have a place to go nothing was open so early...back then it was us and Aggies on Houston that opened early. This was still the Soho of art galleries and artists not shopping !
