This Harry McClintock (Haywire Mac) 5" Flexo out of San Francisco seems to be previously unknown, and just recently surfaced. What a thrill to presumably be the first human since 1931 or so, to hear a disc made by this true American Icon. Land Of The Sky broadcasts live TONIGHT 7-9PM Eastern. 103.7FM in Asheville, and streaming at wpvmfm.org

Tonight Asheville gets a rare treat! One of the finest stringbands in all the land, and my dear friends, all the way from Portland, Oregon. Regrettably, myself and The Handfuls are unable to perform, but it's still gonna be one for the books! I'll be spinning 45s after they play too.
Boy has it been a spell since I've done a Land Of The Sky broadcast but it's happening TONIGHT 7-9PM Eastern! Really looking forward to being back in the studio with some great discs. You may listen on WPVM 103.7FM in AVL, and it streams at wpvmfm.org.

Here is the most recent Land Of The Sky broadcast, and the last one for a couple months. The West beckons. Seen here is the great tenor banjoist Frank Fazio on Artista, a very small Italian only label out of NYC in 1927. https://wpvm.nyc3.digitaloceanspaces.com/landofthesky/landofthesky-20220424.mp3?fbclid=IwAR2Letu8kaLBVMrAA5vli1hUZOEFltolYG9xU3-Mxo2oqeIp6Vk_5sPx-ag
Land Of The Sky returns to it's regular format for the first time in over a month! Where else will Rowdy Wright ride The Roan once more, on this ultra scarce FLEXO probably recorded in San Francisco around 1930? With Mac's Haywire Orchestry! 7-9PM EST 103.7FM in AVL and streaming at wpvmfm.org

A newspaper ad from January 1925. Helton and Harris are thought of as western North Carolina fiddlers but both were born a few miles from each other in upper east Tennessee. Harris was almost 40 years old when he moved over the mountain to the Asheville area. Helton was a generation younger, and learned some music at a very young age from a former slave that worked for his father's distillery. Harris was a mentor to Helton and many others and the two gentlemen were friends and musical companions, often competing against one another (Helton sometimes won!).

For better or for worse, Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus is calling it quits this May, after 146 years. No more Circus Train. I'll be playing a handful of circus themed 78s on Land Of The Sky tonight 7-9pm eastern, on WPVM 103.7. Including two sides made (with steam calliope) by the actual Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Band circa 1930. You can stream online at wpvmfm.org.
