Today is World Book Day!!! Take the time to read a book, but not just any book! Read a banned book to show the freedom to be taken on an intellectual and artistic journey should never be censored. Reading is your choice, your book! (Photo Credit - Jaredd Craig)
Update- Time for the meeting will be immediately after the SC House adjourns. We look forward to seeing you today, ready to have your voice heard!
EDIT: The start time for this hearing has been changed to "immediately upon adjournment of the House."
THIS WEDNESDAY (April 10), a House subcommittee will consider a proposed book-banning regulation written by Ellen Weaver's Department of Education. Please join us if you can and arrive early to sign up for public comments.
👉 WHAT: S.C. House Education & Public Works Subcommittee hearing on a statewide book banning policy
👉 WHEN: Wednesday, April 10, immediately after House adjournment
👉 WHERE: South Carolina State House, Blatt Building (1105 Pendleton St., Columbia)
As written, the regulation would empower teacher harassment organizations to ban books containing "sexual conduct" statewide. Classics, 20th-century masterpieces, and contemporary YA fiction would be on the chopping block. You read the full policy proposal on our blog: https://www.aclusc.org/en/news/we-can-stop-statewide-book-purge-it-begins
This regulation has already passed the State Board of Education with some positive revisions, but state lawmakers still have the opportunity to make amendments before it takes effect. We'll be there with coalition partners to speak up for the Freedom to Read. Please join us if you can!
Train them up...these are college students from across the state that are fighting the good fight for diversity, equity, and inclusion. They champion it being good for education and the workforce in South Carolina! We challenge S.C. lawmakers to listen!!!
We can go into the Easter holiday knowing we fought the good fight and the fight continues, as H.4289 will be going to the S.C. Senate. We know the definition, as well as the impact of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Take that into the fight with the senate.
Thank you to the lawmakers in the S.C. House that continue to try to make it make sense. We see you and are right there with you for every amendment, and once and for all define diversity, equity, and inclusion!!! It's really not a scary thing. Meet you at the Statehouse shortly! ATTENTION! ATTENTION! The S.C. House has started arguments on the House floor in reference to bill H.4289, anti-DEI in higher education. Click the link - https://www.scstatehouse.gov/dashboard/house.php - to view the arguments! You know what's next; call your representative and tell them vote NO for this bill.
A packed house at the full S.C. House Education and Public Works committee meeting. Get a good look at who you need to write and call to let them know you are against H. 4289! DEI is good for higher education, good for students, and good for the state's workforce.
H. 4289 is the DEI bill that made it out of subcommittee. We need your continued help to pack the room on Tuesday, Mar. 19, one hour upon adjournment of the House, the Education & Public Works Committee meeting will take place in the Blatt Building, Room 429. Wear yellow!!! If you cannot attend, submit your written testimony to [email protected] before Monday, Mar. 18, at noon. If you miss sending testimony, call each committee member and ask them to vote NO on H. 4289. Any effort to limit, prohibit, or discourage DEI will prevent South Carolina from improving educational outcomes, attracting and retaining a talented workforce while taking resources away to mitigate harms. DEI programs and initiatives help create a more welcoming environment where everyone feels safe and valued. They do not cause bias and discrimination but in fact help institutions better address them when they do occur.
So the real question, State Representative Comer, is should you be writing, supporting, or even speaking about a bill when you don't understand the terminology for which it is based? Watch here. Let them know you do not support H.4290 by calling and/or writing members of the Eduation and Public Works committee!
CALL TO ACTION - We need you to pack the Education and Public Works Subcommittee on Higher Education meeting room today at noon (12:00 PM) to show you are against SC House Bill 4920 - Banning DEI in Higher Education. If passed, HB 4920 could make it more difficult for South Carolina universities to meet the qualifications for various accreditations and grants, as well as affect student enrollment and workforce readiness. Come to Blatt Building, Room 110, 1105 Pendleton Street, Columbia, SC 29211 today! If you cannot attend, listen to the meeting live at by clicking this link - rb.gy/hsxt92. Then contact the members of the subcommittee to let your position be known.
Be encouraged! Our work is not in vein. Last night CBS's "60 Minutes" had a great story about book banning that showcased Beaufort, SC. Take a look - https://www.cbsnews.com/video/book-ban-battle-south-carolina-school-district-60-minutes-video-2024-03-03/!
Beaufort, SC, bans 5 books from school shelves after push to ban 97 | 60 Minutes A South Carolina school district’s superintendent pulled 97 books from schools after a ban push from a few parents and residents. Almost all of the books have since been returned to school libraries.
We look forward your attendance tonight at the full coalition meeting, where we will learn more about SC H.4290 and what you can do to help kill this bill.
