Ohketeau's co-director, Rhonda Anderson, was honored to have been selected as a community member to receive the National medal in DC with the fantastic library director, Chelsea Jordan-Makely.

Congratulations to the Griswold Memorial Library Colrain for receiving the National Medal from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. This award demonstrates their dedication to community outreach, creating programs so families can unite around reading bedtime stories, even while incarcerated and understanding the responsibility to create meaningful and reciprocal relationships with Indigenous communities to highlight an unseen narrative and make everyone feel welcome. The fact that so many people from Colrain came to DC to support this meaningful National Medal and to have Congressman Jim McGovern attend was a great honor and speaks volumes to the essential relationships and work being done!

Well deserved and hearty congratulations!!

About - Forest Center of Northwest Massachusetts 30/06/2024

Ohketeau is a proud partner in creating this essential online resource. Our critical lens, lifting of Indigenous individuals, organizations, and Tribal Nations to offer education, address colonization, and further relationship-building, will continue for years to come. It is a true honor to be doing this work with a partnership so robust with amazing individuals who strive to make a difference!

The Forest Center of Northwest Massachusetts (sponsored by the Woodlands Partnership of Northwest Massachusetts and the Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Program) is a resource provided by the Forest Climate Resilience Program, a multi-partner initiative hosted by Mass Audubon. This website provides community members and state and municipal staff with information on the region’s forests, threats to their healthy functioning, and options for land stewardship.

From this Virtual Forest Center, you can learn about the diverse forest ecosystems of Northwest Massachusetts, about forest climate change impacts & solutions, and ways to support Indigenous-led land stewardship.

A big thank you to all of the Ohketeau Cultural Center staff and Double Edge Theater staff who made the day possible.

A special thanks to Tomantha Sylvester and Reina Mercado Antunez who lovingly organized this event and dedicated so much time and energy towards it for a second year in a row.

This event would not be possible without the support and participation of the community and we thank you for all of your support.

From Rhonda Anderson: The William Apess Day Celebration was absolutely fantastic!! Quyanaqpak to Mother Bear Anita Peters for welcoming us into space. I am so grateful that citizens of the Mashpee, Aquinnah, and Herring Pond Wampanoag and Nipmuc Tribe came to read a scene about Apess from their play, “We Are The Land.” I am so grateful that Hartman Deetz, John Jim Peters Jr., and Drew Lopenzina sat on a mini panel to share their stories and experiences with those who came to listen and celebrate. Much love to Deborah Spears Moorehead for your beautiful portrait of William Apess and your ability to tell a story on canvas.
Big gratitude goes to Chelsea Jordan-Makely, Library director, for taking so much care in listening to Indigenous communities, creating relationships of reciprocity and compassion, providing a platform to share Native narratives, a lens on history and contemporariness, and a safe and welcoming space for everyone. I have no doubts that is why the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences chose Griswold Memorial Library as one of 15 finalists for the nation's highest honor given to museums and libraries, the 2024 National Medal for Museum and Library Service. It is no coincidence that the decision will be finalized on the actual William Apess Day, May 21. Fingers crossed that GML is chosen as one of four in the nation! ((Today, it is announced that GML has been chosen to receive the nation's highest honor!!)
I am grateful to the wonderful people who came to support, celebrate, learn, unlearn, and deeply listen to this amazing event. As co-director of Ohketeau and a sponsor of this event, I am honored to support this necessary community-building work in my little hometown.

21/05/2024

Well done, Griswold Memorial Library! Congratulations on being one of four libraries in 2024 to receive the nation's highest honor!!
