“In the past 200 years, the ocean's acidity has increased 30%—faster than any known change in ocean chemistry in the last 50 million years.” — The Smithsonian Institution

The cause is the burning of fossil fuels, which increases the level of carbon in the atmosphere and from there to the ocean.

Women's History Month -- Shirley Chisholm

Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm was the first African American woman in Congress (1968) and the first woman and African American to seek the nomination for president of the United States from one of the two major political parties (1972). Her motto and title of her autobiography—Unbossed and Unbought—illustrates her outspoken advocacy for women and minorities during her seven terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.

My favorite of her many good quotes: "If they won't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair."

Women's History Month --Ada Deer

I was privileged to know Ada Deer when she served on the Girl Scout National Board in the 1980s. She is one of my heroes.

When the U.S. government decided to terminate the rights of her native Menominee Nation (along with many other tribes) in 1954, Ada Deer led the charge to fight back, finally regaining recognition for her people in 1973.

She later served as chair of the Menominee and in 1993 was appointed Assistant Sec'y of the Interior and head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs by President Clinton.

Women’s History Month — Nancy Dickerson

In 1960, as Nancy Hanschman, she became the first woman to be hired as a network correspondent by CBS News and was a mainstay there and in the Washington bureau of NBC, in which she worked from 1963 to 1970.

Her son, John Dickerson, is now a news reporter for CBS, assigned to 60 Minutes.

Texas congresswoman Barbara Jordan (1936-1996) rose to the national stage from Houston’s largely African American Fifth Ward, becoming a public defender of the U.S. Constitution and a leading presence in Democratic Party politics for two decades. She was the first Black woman elected to the Texas state senate and the first Black Texan in Congress.

How Can Nonprofits Move from Exploitative Storytelling to Justice-Oriented Storytelling? How to get crucial data from your media list - PR Daily 17/07/2020

I have long believed that the best media lists are built by hand for a specific pitch, not cobbled together from some giant, corporate list building platform. Here's a good article that endorses my view and also provides some useful tips for building a custom list.

How to get crucial data from your media list - PR Daily Here’s how one PR veteran argues you should think about cultivating connections with the media in the digital age. When I began my career in public relations in 2004, the act of building a media list was an isolated one. The output was limited to a list of names on a spreadsheet, which was stored ...

Important message from the Support Center for Nonprofit Management here in NYC:

Dear Support Center Colleagues:

If you have not followed the story closely (and we can well understand why that might be), you should know that a coronavirus stimulus package is well underway. While there is pressure to move quickly, we also need to ensure that our nonprofit organizations and workforce can tap into the same supports as for-profit corporations.

Last week, the charitable non-profit community sent a very strong package of policy solutions that would address the immediate needs of organizations and the people they serve. You can read the letter here. Key provisions that the nonprofit sector is rallying around include: explicit nonprofit eligibility for emergency funding of $60B, improvements to the above-the-line charitable deduction (there is a petition that you can sign onto here) and nonprofit eligibility in small business loan programs (read here).

Writing your senators and representatives is easy; just click those links and find your officeholders. Tweeting is easy too. Go here to find your Senator’s or Representative's Twitter handle.

The message is simple: “I want you to understand what this pandemic is doing to the ability of my non-profit to serve your constituents.” Tell your story. Close with something like, “I urge you to include the policy solutions proposed by the non-profit community in any COVID-19 relief and stimulus legislation.”

Best,
Keith Timko and the Support Center team

Our Story

I help nonprofit organizations use communications to promote social justice. Recently, my business partners and I worked on issues relating to immigration, child welfare, medical technology, healthcare, dual language education, opioid addiction, homelessness, human organ donation, and juvenile justice. Our nonprofit clients make all of our contributions possible. They are the heroes who labor every day to bend the arc of the moral universe a little bit further toward justice.
