MY KANA TONGA APP LAUNCH

The My Kana Tonga App will be launched by the Ministry of Health on the 16th of February at Lopaukamea Hall, USP Tonga Campus.

The Centre for Flexible Learning (CFL) at the University of the South Pacific partnered with the National Food and Nutrition Centre of the Ministry for Health and Medical Services (Fiji) to develop the My Kana application in 2016. My Kana is an app that helps people track their meals and monitor their weight and nutrition using the Pacific Foods Composition table.

The My Kana app has gone through a number of developments since 2016. There were growing interests from online users to have a similar app for Tonga. In December 2022, FAO funded the development of the Tongan version - My Kana Tonga.

You can download the My Kana app on Play Store and Apple Store.

Last week Saturday we did a small pilot launch of My Kana Tonga with the Tongan Community here at Api Tonga in Suva. We are thankful to Dr. Paula Vivili (Deputy Director-General Science and Capability, SPC) for opening the event with a very thought provoking speech on NCDs in the Pacific. The event included a demonstration of the app, health check ups, a display of healthy food and drink.

We are grateful for the Tongan Community here in Suva for showing up and giving us feedback on the app. This will greatly help us improve the app in the lead up to the official launch in Tonga. The Tongan translation of the My Kana app was funded by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

Lastly, we acknowledge Joy Kami and Siu Jione for organising this event as well the greater Tongan community in Suva.

For updates on this project in the Tongan language please follow Kana Tonga . More pictures and videos to follow.

In June of 2018, the My Kana team was successful in their application for a patent. The Australian Patent office granted a patent for the hand measurement component in our app. (Australian Patent No. 2018100707)

However, ever since we opened up the app to the region we have had to disable this feature as the hand measurement data was only collected from Fiji. We plan to work on a larger sample from different countries to be able to bring this feature back to the app.

Irene Chief’s words are stark as she describes what spurred her and her colleague K**a Ateca to do something about unhealthy diets in their island nation of Fiji. Seeing co-workers in their thirties or forties dying of heart attacks “will leave you traumatised,” she says. “We go to more and more funerals of young people… when people leave families at 30 or 40, we really need to look at our diet.”
