“Hyperion is a small bank and they care about you like it is their own business they are tending to. They listened to me, were warm and nice, and learned what my needs were exactly, so special thanks to Hyperion, Jennifer (Gardella) and Irini Lulu*.”

Hyperion Bank is included on Inc. Magazine’s 2024 Inc. 5000 list, recognizing the nation’s fastest-growing private companies. We ranked 3835 on the list, based on percentage revenue growth, 2021-2023, of 120%.
“Our team members, business partners and customers are the reason for our growth and success,” says Hyperion’s Charlie Crawford. “And, as excited as I am for the recognition of our growth, I’m most pleased that we were able to accomplish this while remaining true to our customer promise: Connecting you with highly accessible, experienced, enthusiastic bankers who have local decision-making authority. Growth is great, but it’s our people – and their commitment to tailored service – that got us here.”
“I want to congratulate all of those who made this year’s Inc. 5000,” Charlie says, “and take this milestone as another opportunity to say THANK YOU to our and . Accolades and recognition of our smart growth drive us to continue setting the bar even higher.”

We opened (an account) with Hyperion for the new venture I am working on and will also be shifting (other accounts) – everything – over. I just wanted to let you know how wonderful the experience was. Amy Ellis & Joel Higdon and the other folks I have dealt with have been great. It is so refreshing to have people to talk to – it’s the way banking was years ago when you could actually get somebody on the phone that cared, and you were important to them. I think you guys have a great advantage over the big banks. I just wanted to thank you and look forward to working with you.

Hyperion Bank is among 20 finalists in the small company category for the Philadelphia Business Journal’s 2024 Best Places to Work, recognized at a gala event last night.
Team Hyperion members shown at the event are, from left, front row, Ryan Sullivan, Nicole Hicken, Bridget Jungblut, Megan Fantini & Jennifer Soli Gardella. Second row, from left, Brian McNulty, Charlie Crawford, Ka'Rin Smith & Nicole Leitz. Charlie & Nicole also are shown with signage at the event.
“I am most proud of the fact that this was genuinely an employee-led effort, with Nicole Leitz (VP & Business Development Officer) initiating the process and other team members enthusiastically completing the steps in the BPTW nomination process,” says Hyperion President & COO Lou DeCesare, who notes that a number of friends, customers & business partners of the bank were among the 84 companies on this year’s list.
Among the Hyperion employee comments the Business Journal shared from nomination forms: “This is my home. The people here are amazing. We are a family and that’s important. Your voice is heard. We work hard and are rewarded for it. They care about their employees and customers. Plus, we have a work/life balance like no other.”
DeCesare chuckles that the song Hyperion team members chose to describe their company culture was “Takin’ Care of Business” by Bachman-Turner Overdrive.
“I am fortunate to work with this terrific team day in and day out. Congratulations to all of the winners and finalists!” Lou says.

In its Second Quarter 2024 Report to Shareholders, Hyperion Bancshares, Inc., Hyperion Bank’s holding company, noted more moderate balance sheet growth in loans and deposits, as well as growth in revenues and net income.
“Revenues have increased 26% and our net income is up 38% over the same period last year,” says Charlie Crawford, CEO & Chairman of the Philadelphia-based community bank, which also has a banking office and mortgage joint venture in Atlanta. “And the credit quality of our loan portfolio continues to be very good.”
Shareholders also learned that Paul Rutkowski, Hyperion CFO, has announced his retirement, first working concurrently with the bank’s new SVP, CFO & Treasurer, Eric Golden, to ensure continuity. Golden previously served in CFO & Controller roles with Iron Workers Bank, Susquehanna Bancshares and Abington Bank, as well as being a Senior Auditor with Deloitte.
“Paul's financial leadership over the last seven years has seen Hyperion Bank go from assets of $89 million to $420 million,” Crawford says. “Capital grew from $6 million to $41 million, and net income has increased by a multiple of 13. We are grateful for the opportunity to work alongside Paul during such a pivotal time for the bank.”

Customer focus: Mema’s LLC – now with three locations – has grown nearly as fast as the children it serves. Owner Kim Stone began offering childcare in her home in 2003, but soon outgrew that and realized her vision to offer high-quality childcare in areas others might consider less-desired. She saw an opportunity to do good – and to do well.
Not long ago she closed on a loan at Hyperion that enabled her to buy the building she had been leasing for four years – Mema’s third location. “I had been begging the owner to sell me the building,” she says, “so when he said ‘yes,’ I wanted to make this happen.”
Her real estate broker, Irini Lulu (prev. featured in Hyperion’s newsletter), introduced Kim to Hyperion Bank, as she had done for other clients. Thus, Kim connected with Jennifer Gardella, Hyperion Vice President of Commercial Lending.
“Everything was so smooth,” Kim says. “Jenn was great. We got the loan in place, completed the purchase…and I already know where I want my fourth location to be.”
“As a center, Mema's provides a family-like learning and enrichment environment that allows the children to learn through play,” Kim says. “Students at Memas Early Learning Center have socialization opportunities that come with peers of similar ages, the enrichment opportunities that come with a center’s resources and structure, and the community that comes with experienced staff.”
Across its three locations, Mema's services infants all the way up to school-age. They also provide Free PhL-preK and accept subsidy. For more information, they can be reached via phone, 267-900-2498 or email.

A baby possum visited our PHL banking office Thursday morning. Elisa Varella, from our Compliance Department, was initially trying to find out how best to help our marsupial visitor. SVP Lauren Flowers soon joined the effort and, knowing friends of Hyperion are around the corner at Fishtown Animal Hospital, called them in.
Fishtown Animal Hospital Practice Manager John & Vet Tech Trish, who save & treat ALL animals, came and rescued this cutie, making sure she is happy and healthy. FAH owner Dr. Lauren Cohn says “Possums are my favs!”
Here’s to the two Laurens, Elisa and John & Trish for making sure Brotherly Love extended to our new friend we’re calling Penny – for Pennsylvania.

On July 4 Hyperion’s Charlie Crawford ran his 33rd AJC Peachtree Road Race, sharing pics with us from the start of the race, and afterward, where he is shown with former neighbor Julie Brady. (Peep Charlie’s tee shirt from Philadelphia’s Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run, from May.) Charlie’s father-in-law, Ken Byers – a friend of Hyperion – ran his 45th Peachtree. Charlie, Ken & Ansley Crawford also are pictured together.

Hyperion’s Charlie Crawford was re-elected to the Board of Directors of the Community Bankers Association of Georgia (CBA).
Nominations were announced and approved at CBA’s Annual convention earlier this month. CBA was founded in 1969 to protect the political interests of locally owned community banks; it now represents 135 community banks and 150 associate member companies and is the state’s only advocate working solely for the interests of community banks and their customers.
Charlie also serves on the board of the Pennsylvania Association of Community Bankers.

At last night’s INSPIRE awards gala – the Pennsylvania Association of Community Bankers’ annual fete – Hyperion’s Charlie Crawford accepted an Excellence in Marketing, Best Digital/Social Media Creative Award, on behalf of the bank. Charlie – who serves on PACB’s board – also was an award presenter at the event.
The award recognizes Hyperion’s “people-focused” monthly newsletter & social media. “Our bank’s ‘edge’ is our people, who are experienced, enthusiastic and empowered to ensure our customers and business partners get the tailored service and banking solutions they need,” Charlie says, “so focusing on people – not just customers, but also business partners, our team members, board members and others in the communities we serve – in our communications is a natural.”
If you’re not receiving Hyperion’s monthly newsletter, or if you have an idea for a newsletter feature, let us know: [email protected]. Drop “newsletter” in the subject line.
In addition to service on PACB’s board, Charlie also serves on the board of the Community Bankers Association of Georgia.

Hyperion has finalized its instant issue debit card upgrade; we can now issue contactless cards for both consumer and commercial customers, printing the cards at our banking offices in Atlanta and Philadelphia.
Customers can leave the bank with a new card in hand, whether they have just opened a new account or are getting a replacement card. These are permanent cards, just as the ones printed offsite are – and all are contactless.
With the chip technology + contactless features, these cards ensure security. This new instant issue availability also means customers experiencing a lost or stolen card can get a replacement card quickly.
(Your existing card will still function as normal through the expiration date; we will replace the expiring card with an updated contactless card when the time comes. This will be auto-shipped to the card holder.)
Reminder: You also can access your Hyperion consumer cards through our mobile banking app, using the “Cards” option at the bottom of the app. That tab enables customers to activate a card (again, for consumer account cards; pls call the bank for an assist with business account cards) change a pin, view a digital card, report the card lost or stolen, see more detail on charges (names and address), set spending limits, turn the card off and on, set up push notification, and allow or restrict international usage.
