Seven skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy:
1) Systemic retinoids
"Systemic retinoids, particularly roaccutane, used in acne treatments, are strictly forbidden during pregnancy, so much so that dermatologists advise women not to plan a pregnancy for the whole duration of therapy," Dr Meder says.
Whether taken as an oral pill prescribed by a doctor or applied topically, systemic retinoids can cause harm to an unborn child, so they absolutely must not be used during pregnancy or if you're trying for a baby.
2) Retinol derivatives.
That means you should be looking on the ingredients list for things like retinyl acetate, retinyl linoleate, retinyl palmitate and retinyl propionate, often found in anti-ageing or acne treatments.
"There is no definitive proof of any negative effects yet, however, it has been suggested that retinol derivatives may pose a risk of harm, however minor, to the embryo."
3) Whitening creams
According to the NHS, skin whitening products containing hydroquinone and/or corticosteroids (steroid medication), such as hydrocortisone "that haven't been prescribed by a doctor are banned in the UK, as they can cause serious side effects if used incorrectly."
"Whitening and brightening solutions with hydroquinone are safe to use during pregnancy and won't harm the foetus,"
However we recommend avoiding them for another reason.
"Skin can become more sensitive during pregnancy, increasing the risk of side effects and complications from these treatments."
4) Salicylic acid.
5) Glycolic acid. Gycolic is an alpha hydroxy acid found in exfoliating products.
"However, this doesn't mean all AHAs need to be avoided. Citric and lactic acids, for example, are safe to use during pregnancy."
6) Essential oils
"Although natural, there are several essential oils that should be used with caution during pregnancy, Plus, they can increase the chance of skin pigmentation. "Many essential oils increase the skin's sensitivity to UV, which isn't great considering the risk of pigmentation is higher during pregnancy."
7) Camphor and mint
"Camphor, peppermint extract, and mint oil are also not recommended during pregnancy,( Vicks VapoRub)
New HPV Vaccine : ®9
GARDASIL®9 includes the greatest number of HPV types in any available HPV vaccine. After HPV types 16 and 18, the five additional HPV types in GARDASIL®9 are the most common cervical cancer-causing types worldwide. The nine HPV types in GARDASIL®9 (HPV 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52 and 58) cause approximately 90 percent of cervical cancer cases and approximately 75-85 percent of high-grade cervical lesions (cervical precancers, defined as CIN 2, CIN 3 and AIS) worldwide. These seven HPV types also cause 85-90 percent of HPV-related vulvar cancers, 80-85 percent of HPV-related vaginal cancers, and 90-95 percent of HPV-related a**l cancers. HPV types 6 and 11 cause approximately 90 percent of ge***al warts cases. In addition, approximately 50-60 percent of cases of low-grade cervical lesions (CIN 1) are caused by the nine HPV types included in the vaccine.
"The human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in Canada and worldwide. It is estimated that 75% of sexually active Canadian men and women will have at least one anoge***al HPV infection in their lifetime," explained Dr. Vivien Brown, Family Doctor and Board Member of Immunize Canada. "Vaccination remains the best method to prevent HPV infection and to protect yourself from the risk of HPV-related diseases."

On 8 July, during this year’s European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) congress, encouraging data were presented from a randomised, prospective, pilot study examining the use of stem cells to “re-awaken” the ovaries in women ages 38 years or younger with premature ovarian failure. Premature ovarian failure is the cessation of normal ovarian function and follicle production, resulting in a loss of fertility, before the age of 40 years. In the study, follicular development was demonstrated in both study arms: patients receiving autologous stem cell ovarian transplant (ASCOT) as a direct infusion of stem cells in the o***y and those receiving mobilised stem cells through peripheral blood. GlobalData believes that the study findings pave the way for novel treatment options for patients who face difficult-to-treat infertility issues despite their young age, and who are otherwise faced with limited treatment options and relatively poor fertility outcomes. No currently available treatment option has been shown to restore fertility, so the resumption of ovarian function in these patients means women could have the chance to pursue pregnancy through in vitro fertilisation (IVF) using their own eggs as opposed to donor eggs.
According to key opinion leaders (KOLs) interviewed by GlobalData, the process of rescuing follicles from the existing ovarian follicle pool for subsequent use during IVF, known as ovarian rejuvenation, constitutes an important area of research with the potential to address infertility causes such as premature ovarian failure or diminished ovarian reserve (DOR). DOR is defined as a lower quantity and quality of oocytes than expected. KOLs agreed that DOR and premature ovarian failure constitute subgroups of infertility patients that are challenging to treat due to their low or depleted ovarian reserve. On average, approximately 21% of infertility patients were diagnosed with DOR across the seven major markets (7MM: US, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK, and Japan) .
The procedure is still investigational and needs more study to confirm its effectiveness.
