Rock the Rez 2024: Rosebud!
We’re on our 3rd day of camp! We’ve been learning our instruments, writing songs, naming bands, and gathering medicines from the Spring Creek territory on the Rosebud Reservation. This year we had farm fresh eggs donated to us for some nutritious breakfasts, too!

It’s been such good energy this year, full of positivity and generosity. ❤️🖤💛🤍

In collaboration and sponsored by St. Francis Community, Sicangu Co, Tokala Inajinjo Youth Mentoring Program, St. Francis Indian School Project Aware, RST Adult Corrections, RST Juvenile Detention Center, RST Diabetes Prevention, White Buffalo Calf, and Rosebud Sioux Tribe.

Join us Friday for this week's Iyokpiya Waunspepi with April Matson! April Matson (They/Them) identifies as Two-Spirit and is an enrolled member of the Sicangu Lakota Oyate and the Tanana Athabaskan Tribe of Alaska. They became the Executive Director of Rock The Rez in 2019, focusing on expanding the program in order to bring music and art to more youth and their families. Their mission? To bring the transformative power of music and art to more youth and their families. Rock The Rez is more than just a rock music camp. It’s a space for Indigenous girls, Two-Spirit, and gender diverse youth to express themselves, learn, and grow.
Currently, the rhythm of Rock The Rez echoes in Pine Ridge, SD and Rosebud, SD. But who knows where the music will take us next?
From growing up in Rapid City, SD to now living in Minneapolis, MN with their two children, April’s journey is a testament to the power of music and the importance of cultural identity.

🌷🪻🌟 Rock The Rez is looking for volunteers for both our Pine Ridge camp and our Rosebud camp! We have positions of all sorts and would love to see your application today! 🌟🪻🌷

Preference given to Indigenous folks and those from the communities we serve but we accept applications from everyone!

Rocking out on Pine Ridge Rock the Rez is an annual summer camp that allows for Indigenous girls, two-spirits, nonbinary youth and transgender youth to learn to express themselves through music. Every day, the camp provides two different creative workshops, musical lessons, a performance from a local Indigenous band and two....

Happy showcase day to our campers in Rosebud!!! We have two stellar bands performing today and we cannot wait!!! 🤘🏽

Day 2: Today campers watched a special performance from that was shared with campers in 2020. Then they gathered plant medicine with 🌿

We heard some songs coming together and there’s definitely a band name in the works! 🤘🏽

We work so hard all year and we just finished the first week of camp which is incredibly gratifying and emotional! We’re so proud of this project and this is really amazing to see!!!! It’s not easy, but it’s always so worth it. 🥰

This week we have had 3 bands practicing and collaborating together to write a song, create a band name, and today is the day they perform! We LOVE showcase day.. lots of happy tears and sad tears because we have to say goodbye..

Created by an all-Native team, this film beautifully captures Zitkála-Šá's journey, from her time in boarding school to her iconic Sun Dance Opera. Through Indigenous music and storytelling, "Zitkala Sa" challenges and decolonizes the traditional boundaries of opera.
