Chest of drawers update: The reveal. The chest is done! Base color is Benjamin Moore's Ming Jade. There is a gold glaze on top of that, and we used antique gold rub and buff on some of the front drawer details. Then we put a coat of poly on it, because we like shiny things!
Chest of Drawers Restoration
Chest of drawers is primed and ready to paint!
Update on our chest of drawers: The biggest problem we encountered was the wonky drawers. Dovetail joints that were gapping and peppered with nails. We removed the nails. Sanded and stained the drawers. Glued the dovetails and added corner braces on the interior of the drawers for additional stability.
Update on our chest of drawers: We stained the interior guts of the chest walnut. We had to replace two drawer dividers with new ply and we wanted everything to match. We're also going to be staining the drawers, inside and out, everything except the drawer faces which will be painted.
Update on our chest of drawers: Another problem we discovered once the paint was removed... big flat head nails hammered through the face of a couple of the drawers. These we extracted (not an easy feat), and we used wood filler to repair the damage.
Update on our chest of drawers: Once all the paint was stripped away, a few problems came to light. The first problem was water damage. Both sides of the dresser were damaged, but since the damage was only on the bottom of the panels, we were able to treat the wood and cover the damage with moulding. The back of the dresser was a different story. It was buckled and cracked and had to be replaced altogether. On the dresser's interior, there were two particle board shelves that were warped and stained. We removed those and replaced them with new plywood pieces.
Update: Six hours of labor and five quarts of paint stripper later.... We are stripped and sanded!
Update on the chest of drawers project: How many applications of paint stripper did it take to remove all those layers of paint? If you guessed three, you are correct!
Iffy 2 Spiffy’s newest project is a family piece that is well over a hundred years old. This chest of drawers was given to my mother in her teens by an elderly woman she cared for. My mother must have really liked the piece, because she held on to it for the rest of her life. Our goal is to have it restored by December 21st, on what would have been my mother’s 99th birthday. We’ll post updates as we go.
