Due to time pressures, very little time is allocated to clinical Dermatology during pre-graduate medical training.
The enormous demand for competent diagnosis and treatment of common skin conditions necessitates the sharing of knowledge amongst a wider cohort of physicians as our country has only a handful of qualified Dermatologists!
During the Clinical Dermatology Course, we share algorithms for the approach to common scenarios such as the itchy patient, the red scaly patient and differential diagnosis in Dermatology.
My interest in Facial palsy came quietly after an inspiring visit to Rome where I witnessed the incredible power of treating these patients with injectables. As my experience evolved, so did my realization that most were unable to afford a potentially life-changing treatment.

Meet Dr Deon van der Westhuizen
Dr van der Westhuizen specializes in the integration of modern techniques of Facial Rejuvenation Surgery. This includes Endoscopic Browlift Surgery, eyelid restoration, structural fat grafting; facial implant, deep level face and neck lift procedures. Our path led from dissecting in the morgue over weekends, to presenting dissection courses in a Skills Lab.

Meet Dr Izolda Heydenrych
Izolda is Director and co-founder of the Cape Town Cosmetic Dermatology Centre and currently in full-time private practice. Before specializing in Dermatology, she obtained an Hons.B.Sc in Nuclear Medicine (University Stellenbosch) and Diploma in Anaesthetics (SA College of Medicine).
She is Immediate Past -President of the South African Society for Dermatological Surgery (SASDS), served on the Executive of the Dermatological Society of South Africa and is a founding/EXCO member of the African Womens’ Dermatological Society (AWDS). In 2018 she was awarded the SASDS Lifetime award for exceptional contribution to procedural dermatology and in 2019 declared Ambassador for South African Dermatology by the Dermatological Society of South Africa.
Her passion for sharing knowledge led to the conceptualization of the HeyEd Accedemy .

Meet Dr Ean Smit
Dr Ean Smit graduated from Stellenbosch University as a Dermatologist, after which he attended the Department of Dermatology at Baylor University Medical Centre in Dallas, Texas. He underwent further training in Cutaneous Laser Surgery at the Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute and the South Western Medical Centre in Dallas as well as at the Scripps Laser Centre in La Jolla, California and in Boston, Massachusetts.
Ean is Director and co-founder of the Cape Town Cosmetic Dermatology Centre in Cape Town and a frequent lecturer on all aspects of laser surgery. He is also a noted national authority on Cutaneous Laser Surgery and is a Fellow of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. Ean’s main focus is skin rejuvenation, using non-surgical methods and laser technology.

Laser treatment has multiple benefits , from decreasing wrinkles and age spots to improving acne scars and redness. Lasers may be either ablative ,ie break the skin, or non-ablative, where the skin is not broken. When only a percentage of the skin is treated, it is termed " Fractional". Both ablative and non-ablative lasers may be fractional.
Lasers differ from Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) or Broad Band Light (BBL) in that the latter operate with broad band light whereas lasers are focussed beams .
Understanding the correct indications, and especially contra-indications ,for the various energy-based devices is crucial before embarking on treatments.
It takes our skin 28 days to grow basal cells into mature corneocytes. During their upward journey they undergo a major makeover to form a very special zone called the epidermal barrier. Preserving this barrier function is vital because it protects us from pe*******on of harmful agents.

What is facial nerve palsy?
Facial nerve palsy results in weakness of the muscles of facial expression. This affliction greatly impacts social interactions and quality of life. The HeyEd Foundation for Facial Palsy is an NGO and International Philanthropic Trust which was founded with the aim of enabling treatment for those unable to afford it.
At HeyEd Academy we aim to: foster a growth mindset, share practical skills, increase clinical proficiency and encourage uncompromising excellence amongst practitioners. Both dermatologists and non-dermatologist physicians are welcomed to clinical training sessions. Communication and presentation skills training , group facilitation and inspirational lectures are offered to a wider cohort.

Meet Dr Willie Visser
Dr Visser is the Head of Dermatology at the University of Stellenbosch, Tygerberg Academic Hospital. He also works as a part-time consultant in dermatology for a number of private institutions.
He has an active interest in research and focuses on establishing a culture of research in the Division of Dermatology and also among medical students. Dr Visser is actively involved in a number of community projects and provides consulting services to popular magazines and to peripheral hospitals and clinics.

What is clinical dermatology?
The vast and fascinating spectrum of clinical dermatology encompasses conditions pertaining to the skin, hair, and nails.
