Kirkstall councillors are consulting on a proposal to create more parking spaces at Kirkstall Abbey following feedback from local residents about how problematic it can be when visitors to the Abbey park on residential streets.

Residents on Vesper Lane, Vesper Gardens, Quarry Bank Court, Kepstorn Close, Morris View and the end of Morris Lane should all receive a letter this week and the councillors will be out knocking on doors on Saturday 1st December, 11:30 to 1:30, to talk about the proposals and hear local views.

Cllr Fiona Venner will be collating responses and she can be contacted by email - [email protected] - or by phone on 07749 551732.

“James E Allenby”
“Walter Andrä
Saturday evening, 10th November 2018, these names rang out at the top of a quiet street in Kirkstall, near Burley Village Green.
This was the start of the Roll Call, organised by Cllr Hannah Bithell, the newest Labour Councillor for Kirkstall, who led the occasion. A group of ten readers read out alternately the names of the men killed fighting in the first world war from Kirkstall, Leeds, England and those of the of the men from Huckarde, Dortmund, Germany; a similar suburb in Leeds' twin town.
Councillors Fiona Venner & John Illingworth were joined as readers by former Councillor Lucinda Yeadon. Lucinda is still involved in many Community Events, generously contributing her time. The remainder of the group, from the community, the Labour Party and the Guiding movement held candles, sheltering the flames from the gusts of wind, on the dry but chilly evening marking the Centenary of the end of the First World War.
Following the roll call, we were entertained to songs in English and German by local group Music from the Attic and were delighted to be joined by a young local musician on his way home from a day's busking.
We remember the dead from all sides of the conflict and wish for a peaceful future.

Children in the Spens have nowhere safe and convenient to play, so Kirkstall and Weetwood councillors are working together to secure a new play area on the West Park Fields. Should we create separate areas for different ages, with younger children's play equipment outside the STEP centre near Queenswood Drive, or a larger area with provision for a wider age range near Butcher Hill? Let us know what you think.

Last week Leeds marched against the far right supporters of Tommy Robinson; against racism and in celebration of our multicultural city. This week we marched in protest at Trump's visit and so did thousands in London. While the Mail rails about rent-a-lefties, our leader calls for hope.

Our message today to President Donald Trump was: We're united in our hope for a world of justice not division.

30 years ago today the Conservatives, under Margaret Thatcher, introduced Section 28 which stated that a local authority: "shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality."

After Labour came into power, the law, which was supported by Theresa May, was repealed in 2003. Labour continue to be the party that fight for LGBTQ+ rights not just in the UK, but in terms of interactions with the wider world - where in many countries not only is "promoting homosexuality" illegal, but it is punishable by death.
