Having no model for female leadership in the church, she ignored it until two years ago. What changed?

Liturgy calls God’s people into worship, prepares us to hear God’s Word read and proclaimed, and sends us out into the world to live as disciples of the Risen Christ. In "The Art and Practice of Liturgy," Nicole Partin Abdnour will guide participants through creating liturgy, the abundance of liturgical resources available for clergy and congregations to use, as well as ways to lead liturgy that will transform words on paper into life-giving words that create the desired and intended tone for worship.

On women pastors and biblical authority: A Presbyterian reflection - The Presbyterian Outlook 27/06/2024

Congratulations to Union Presbyterian Seminary faculty member Frances Taylor Gench—this fifth-generation Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) minister won an Award of Excellence in Biblical Interpretation for her reflection on female pastoral leadership and the biblical interpretations. The Associated Church Press (ACP) awards recognize the best in faith-based media. With more than 800 entries, kudos to the Presbyterian Outlook for the Best of the Church Press Awards!

On women pastors and biblical authority: A Presbyterian reflection - The Presbyterian Outlook Responding to the Southern Baptist Convention's actions to bar female pastoral leadership, biblical scholar Frances Taylor Gench reflects on how the PC(USA) engages Scripture that instructs women to be subservient such as 1 Timothy 2.

Our Story

Since its formation in 1812, Union Presbyterian Seminary has sustained the intention of its founders to provide education for Christian ministry that is scholarly, pastoral, and engaged with contemporary life.

It occupies a 56-acre campus in historic Ginter Park in Richmond's Northside, with classroom buildings, a mix of student housing options, landscaped grounds, and one of the finest theological libraries in the United States. The campus is on the national historic registry. Worship is held several times a week when classes are in session. Students organize and lead worship, with additional participation and leadership from faculty, alumni, and staff. In addition, the community participates in meals, formal and informal fellowship gatherings, lectures and discussions, community service opportunities, social events, and athletic programs. Students are encouraged to become involved in the life of local congregations.

Union offers programs at a second campus in Charlotte, NC, where the curriculum is designed especially for second-career students who continue full or part-time work while pursuing theological study. The fellowship of the student cohorts along with the leadership and support of the faculty and staff is a particular strength of the program.

The Blended Learning Program provides a means to pursue part-time graduate study toward the Master of Christian Education degree without relocating by combining distance learning in one's home setting with intensive on-campus sessions in Richmond twice a year.
