Royal Jersey Golf Club

Royal Jersey Golf Club

Royal Jersey golf club is situated over looking the bay of Grouville in the beautiful Island of Jersey. 18 hole links golf course, 6120 yards in length.

Golf was first played in 1878 and was soon granted the Royal title, the 8th golf club to be granted that honour. One of the most memorable opening holes you will lever play!

It is with regret that the course has suffered damage to two greens in the last four days. The damage has been caused by a dog digging a hole in greens Two and Nine, the most recent of which occurred overnight and is subject of the attached image.

It is very rare for a dog to randomly dig a hole without encouragement. Therefore, the Club has no alternative but to report the two incidents to the Police as malicious damage.

There are many members who walk their dogs regularly on the course so perhaps those members that do so could keep an eye out for anything untoward.

A three man team from the Royal Jersey will not only be representing the Club but also the County in the finals of the English Club Champions Trophy to be held at East Devon GC this weekend.

The trio of Alex Guelpa, Gavin O'Neill and Matthew Parkman, along with non-Playing Captain Ian Daly, will travel to play in this National event run by England Golf. The Club will be representing Hampshire by virtue of winning the team event in the Hampshire County Championships held earlier this year. Every county in England and Wales wil have a club representative. The winners of the English Trophy will them qualify for the European Trophy to be held in Portugal later in the year.

The event is a 36 holes strokeplay (18 on Saturday and 18 on Sunday) and ALL six scores will count. We wish the team the very best of luck!

Extremely proud of my team and the work that has been completed over the last 2 weeks. Greens have been over-seeded, top-dressed, leatherjacket treatment and aerated along with tees, approaches and greens surrounds. Just starting to see seed germination on greens which is a great result and surfaces starting to run true again. Everything cut up for the weekend, course looking great. Well done team.

Royal Jersey member Helen Lagadu recently completed a 72 hole one day challenge to raise funds for the ICU at Jersey Hospital, Friends of Oncology, Critical Care Unit at Basingstoke Hospital and MS Society Jersey.

Helen completed 36 holes at the Royal Jersey before a further 36 holes at St Clement's. In completing the challenge she managed to raise £1,750 to be split amongst the above charities.

Helen would like to thank both clubs for making it possible and all those members who kindly donated.

The Men's and Ladies Club Championships were played in near perfect conditions today. The Men's Championship was played over 36 holes and the winner was Alex Guelpa, with rounds of 65 and 69. Runner-up was Stanley Keites with rounds of 67 and 69. Third place went to Gavin O'Neill (66 & 71). This was Alex's first Club Championship.

The Ladies Championship, the Corbin Trophy, was also played over two rounds with the first round last Tuesday with the top ten best gross qualifiers progreessed through to today's second round. Flora Keites (81) led by a single shot from Suzy Cornic after the first round and then followed this up with a 76 today for a two round total of 157. Suzy carded an 85 to finish runner-up on 167. Third place went to Pam Parkman, 84 and 86.

The Jersey men's team have secured a silver medal in the Gotland Island Games. Needing to overturn a 14 stroke lead by a strong Isle of Man team, it proved a step too far and they finished on a total of 916, to the IOM's 900.

It was looking positive for a while as Team Jersey narrowed the gap after Jason Stokes returned a 74 and Matthew Parkman a 77. But the next scores from the IOM team were very good and this clinched them the gold. Gavin O'Neill carded an 82 whilst Alex Guelpa an 80.

In the individual standings there were no medals for the Jersey guys with Jason Stokes 6th, Alex Guelpa 8th, Gavin O'Neill 9th and Matthew Parkman 26th.

However, an excellent result and one that the Island can be proud of. Silver fo the Men's team and Bronze for the Ladies Team and an indivdual Silver for Flora Keites. Well Done to all!

30/06/2017

The Ladies competition is now over and the Royal Jersey's Flora Keites has won a silver medal in the individual event. She finished on a total of 326, nine strokes behind the winner, Emma Lindman (Aland). It came down to the wire as Flora secured the silver medal by a single shot from Sophie Beardsall (IOW).

In the Team event Team Jersey bounced back and secured a bronze medal, overtaking Bermuda. They finished on a combined total of 1027. The Isle of Wight are silver medal winners with 1019 and the gold medal goes to the home Island Gotland on 1009.

Congratulations to all the team - Flora Keites (2nd), Helen Lagadu (12th), Juanita Adlington (14th) and Hannah Scriven (16th).

29/06/2017

Strong winds and quick greens made scoring very difficult on the third day of the golf event in Gotland. Play has also been slow and the scores for the men's event (which teed off before the Ladies) have only just been posted.

Unfortunately, it has not been a great day for Team Jersey who now trail the Isle of Man by 14 strokes in the team event. Alex Guelpa had the best (Team Jersey) round of the day with a 76 and this has moved him into 6th place in the individual standings. He is now only a stroke behind Gavin O'Neill, who carded an 81. Jason Stokes, who led after two rounds, retuned an 87 and has dropped to a tie for 8th position. The final Jersey player, Matthew Parkman carded a 90.

Despite the disappointing day today, the Men's team are still vying for medals in both the individual and team events, so all to play for tomorrow.

In the Ladies individual Flora Keites remains in silver medal position and has narrowed the gap between herself and Emma Lindman (Aland) to 8 strokes, following her 86 today. Helen Lagadu has moved up to 13th position following an 89. Hannah Scriven is a place behind her following her 94. Juanita Adlington carded a 93.

28/06/2017

The second day's play in the golf event took place at Visby Golf Club, with the Ladies playing first. For the team event the Ladies had a much improved day and moved up to fourth position in the team event table with a total of 518. They trail the Isle of Man (in Bronze medal position) by a mere 4 strokes.

In the individual event Flora Keites added an 83 to her opening 79 and now lies in second place behind Aland's Emma Lindman who carded a best of the day 73 to her opening 79. Flora trails her by 10 strokes, but looking at the scoring this is my no means insurmountable. The other Jersey Ladies individual scores were Hannah Scriven 85, Helen Lagadu 86 and Juanita Adlington 87.

Like the Ladies, the Men's team improved on yesterday's performance and now lead the team event by a single stroke from Isle of Man. Team Jersey are currently on 441 and the Isle of Man on 442.

There are still a couple of players still out on the course so the individual standings are provisional, but at the time of writing. Jason Stokes is currently in gold medal position having carded a 73 to add to his 71 yesterday. Gavin O'Neill is currently in a tie for Bronze having also shot a 73 to add to his opening 73. Alex Guelpa carded a 74 and Matthew Parkman an 81.

Overall, it is currently looking good for Team Jersey. A good performance tomorrow could see the Men cement their standing at the top of the table and the Ladies move into a medal position.

The 2017 Island Games golf event got underway yesterday at 07.30hrs local time (08.30hrs BST). Unlike the Jersey games two years ago, both the Men and the Ladies tournament are playing the same course on the same day and today the Men teed off first.

With three out of fours scores to count, the Jersey Men's team of Gavin O'Neill, Jason Stokes, Matthew Parkman and Alex Guelpa have a total of 221 and are currently lying in second spot. The Isle of Man are leading with 215.

The best gross score of the day was 69 from Isle of Man player, Daryl Callister. Jason Stokes was the best of the Jersey team with 71. The other Jersey individual scores were Gavin O'Neill 73, Matthew Parkman 77 & Alex Guelpa 78.

The Ladies did not fair so well with only Flora Keites breaking 80, with her 79. She is currently lying in second place in the Ladies individual, two shots behind the leader. In the team event Jersey are in 5th place 21 strokes behind the leaders. The other Jersey score were Hannah Scriven 92, Helen Lagadu 93 and Juanita Adlington 95.

The Ladies scoring was not helped by the fact that the Ladies followed the last group of men players - who went off in handicap order - and in the final group a male player carded 179. This resulted in Flora, and the rest of the Ladies event, playing behind him having to endure a six hour round. This is why the Jersey organising committee, when the event was played here, split the Ladies and Men's event onto the two courses. It is not fair to those players who are vying for medals.

The Club has just finished playing host to the Hampshire County Championships at the weekend. The Club received universal priase not only for the quality of the course, but also the catering, staff and, of course, the members for allowing the event to take place.

Whilst the course was seen to be the winner over the weekend, the Champion was Jordan Sundborg (Shanklin & Sandown GC) who defeated County Captain and defending Champion, Martin Young (Brockenhurst Manor) 3&2 in the final. Martin could well have been suffering from fatigue as his quarter final match on Saturday evenning did not finish until 7.00pm, as it went to the 23rd hole!

Whilst it may have been disappointing that a local was not in the final, two did make the semi-finals. Richard Ramskill (La Moye) was beaten by Jordan and Stephen Anderson (RJGC) lost out to Martin.

There were two more individual handicap events at the weekend and both of these were won by Royal Jersey members. Phill Evans won the Hampshire Bowl on Saturday with 34pts and Chris Huelin won the Francis Holmes & Diamond Jubilee Bowl on Sunday with a nett 69. The scratch winner in this event was also won by a home player, Christy McLaughlin (71 gross).

Matthew Parkman, who qualified in second on Friday won a number of prizes for his amazing scoring in qualifying. He carded a gross 67 and 68 on Friday and has reduced his handicap to +1. His scores in qualifying, along with clubmates Gavin O'Neill and Alex Guelpa resulted in the Club winning the Club Champions Shield and will now represent Hampshire in the England Golf Champions Club tournament at East Devon GC in the autumn.

All in all it was a fantastic weekend for the Club, not only did the event showcase the best of what the Royal Jersey can offer, but four out of five trophies were won by members and the Club now has a chance to win a National event. We should be very proud!

Many thanks to Club member Alan Huelin of these shots of the all Jersey quarter final between Alex Guelpa and Richard Ramskill.

The Hampshire County Championships start today with 36 holes of qualifying, with the top 16 progressing through to the matchplay stages over the weekend. The Club is proud to be hosting the event for the first time since 2000 and is hopeful of a home based winner.

Christy McLaughlin enjoyed success on his home track back then, defeating Ryan Henley in the final.

All the top players from Jersey have entered including the whole Island Team that recorded a record defeat over Guernsey last year.

From Hampshire Martin Young (+3), defending Champion and County Captain has travelled as has County team mates, Mark Burgess (+1) and Jordan Sundborg (+2). Unfortunately, a number of other top county players are unavailable owing to a clash with the St Andrews Links Trophy, a major event in the amateur world calendar that carries world ranking points.

Despite this, there is a top class field playing with three +3 handicappers, two of which are from Jersey, the Royal's Gavin O'Neill and La Moye's Jason Stokes.

This should be an exciting weekend and a massive opportunity to showcase the fabulous course we are all proud to have.

Spectators are welcome, with the match play stages commencing at 08.00hrs and 12.30hrs on Saturday and Sunday.

The Royal Jersey hosted its annual 36 hole Open Scratch event, the JW Messervy Salver, yesterday in excellent golfing conditions. Recording his second victory in the event La Moye’s Richard Ramskill took the title with rounds of 76 and 69 for a five over par total of 145.
Three players tied for the lad after the morning round. Jeremy Phillips, Christy McLaughlin and Kalem Sunter all opened up with a one over par 71. But it was Ramskill’s second round 69 that put him in contention. He recorded birdies at the 5th and 9th holes with his only bogey at the short 2nd. His back nine consisted of eight 4s and a 2! His bogey at the short 15th was cancelled out by a birdie two at the following hole.
Sunter followed up his opening 71 with a 76 in the afternoon to finish in fourth place. McLaughlin also retuned a 6 over par 76 and finished 5th. Phillips must rue his bogey, bogey finish for a five over 75 which left him in third spot – a couple of pars would have landed him the victory. Runner-up went to Jason Stokes who recorded two rounds of 73.
This event is an excellent precursor to the Island Championships which start at the Club on Friday. For the second year running the event is straight matchplay with the top 30 players receiving a bye into the last 32 which will be played in the afternoon.

The Ladies held their annual Open Day in glorious Spring weather yesterday and the event attracted a field of 130.
Overall winner was former Lady Captain Sue Bults with an excellent score of 39 stableford points off her 21 handicap. Sue had three pars on the front nine for an outward 21pts and then three on the back nine which included the back-to-back pars on the short 15th and 16th – no mean feat if you are off scratch!
Leading visitor was La Moye’s Elaine Pushman who carded a level par 36pts off her 5 handicap which included birdies at the 8th and 12th holes.
Past Lady Captain Jo Bryon is pictured presenting the trophy to the winner. Mrs Bryon and her sister Annette Farley donated the trophy in their family name, the Benest Trophy.

The Royal Jersey hosted the Ladies Island Match Play Championships last week and there was a fine showing by the host club’s players winning all three divisions.
This was the first time that the event was played over three days to encourage more participants and qualifying was held on Thursday followed by the quarter- and semi-finals being played in Friday with the divisional finals played yesterday.
The Second and Third divisions were played over 18 holes in the morning with Shelagh Herbert defeating Ann-Marie Pereira 1up for the Second Division and Jane Millar defeating Lorraine Simpson 5&4 for the Third Division.
The Championship Division was a battle between two Island Games players, Hannah Scriven and Helen Lagadu, both representing the Royal Jersey. The Championship match is over 36 holes and Hannah led four up going into lunch. Helen won the first hole in the afternoon to reduce the deficit. However, a consistent run by Hannah saw her lead extended to seven holes after the 25th but a fight back by Helen cut the lead to five at the (afternoon) turn.
A sandy par from Helen at the 30th pegged Hannah’s lead to four holes and they halved the 31st hole. Both players found trouble at the par 4 32nd (14th), but an excellent two putt from distance down the green won the hole for Hannah and she closed out the match 5&4 to win her first Island Championship.
Speaking after the match, Helen said that she had left herself too much to do after the morning round, but Hannah was a worthy winner as she was much more consistent over the course of the final.
This bodes well for the forthcoming Island Games where Hannah and Helen will be joined by club mate Flora Keites (who was unavailable for the Championships) and Juanita Adlington, last year’s winner.

We may not require such drastic action, but at times our greens are inunudated with pitch marks. Remember it is YOUR responsibility to repair your pitch mark! No one elses!

Due to the amount of pitch marks that are not being repaired the green staff will be closing main greens down for short periods of time to allow them time to repair the pitch marks. Please remind your playing partners to repair their pitch marks. We do apologise for closing the greens but we feel this is the only way.

Olivia won the season opening event last night in the States. She finished on 10 under par, one shot clear of the rest of the field.

She led from start to finish set up with an opening round of 66 (8 birdies and two bogeys) and followed this up with a pair of 70’s.

Olivia had the luxury of laying up to the final hole (a par 5 she could easily have reached in two with an iron in her hand) and left her wedge shot about 15’ short of the pin, leaving her an uphill putt. She lipped out for birdie but left herself a simple 6” tap in to secure her third title on tour.

A great start for the season for her, considering she had a torrid time last year.
