Remembering our past through our present. We share our moʻolelo so that the culture & heritage is not hidden, but perpetuated through our designs. Read each one at www.kupaadesigns.com.

Pōhaku Ku‘i ‘Ai: The Pōhaku Kuʻi ʻAi was a prized possession in Hawaiian households. Many have been passed down for generations. The Pōhaku Kuʻi ʻAi represents the ability to feed. To provide life-sustaining nutrients to your household and community in the form of pounded Kalo or (our staple crop) paʻi ʻai and poi.
The implement is not ornate, or decorated profusely. That is by design. The artistry of the pōhaku kuʻi ʻai is in its usability, its efficiency, its ability to be utilized to feed.

Pā Pōhaku - Necktie: The walls and ahu of our ancestors have stood for generations. They are made from raw pōhaku, with no mortar. The art of dry stacking pōhaku, or uhauhumu pōhaku, practiced by our kūpuna allowed them to utilize what lay around. The mastery of the practice was in the ability of the craftsmen to select the right stone for the right place. Our kūpuna understood that the strength of the wall lay in the differences of these pōhaku and the ability of the mea haku to bring them together.

Ka Moʻolelo: Iʻe Kuku - Necktie

One of the main implements utilized in the kapa making process, the Iʻe Kuku is valued for its ability to create the subtle beauty of Hawaiian kapa. The geometric designs carved into the beating service are not to beautify the tool, rather it is to transfer that beauty on to the bark. With each strike of the iʻe kuku the kapa gets softer and more supple as well as begins to take on the markings that were painstakingly carved into the implement. The result is fine Hawaiian kapa that is revered across the Pacific for its texture that is both pleasing to the touch as well as pleasing to the eye. www.kupaadesigns.com

Stay safe, everyone! Remember to aloha kekahi I kekahi. Especially to the kūpuna and keiki in your community. Be Maka’ala. If you have enough, share if you see need. From the affluent to the houseless- we are all responsible for each other in this time of uncertainty.
The only way we don’t get through this is if we choose ourselves over the collective. Our kūpuna knew this.
