The name comes from the evil spirits of Roman mythology. According to the beliefs of the ancient Romans, the souls of the dead who did not enter the afterlife roamed the earth, interfering in the affairs of the living. At the same time, some tried to help people, especially their relatives - these good spirits are known as lars. Others, who were called lemurs, on the contrary, were considered evil spirits. This image probably occurred to European naturalists who found these strange creatures in the newly discovered southern lands.
