Reason Behind Offering Milk to Shiva Lingam

Some critics often complain against Sanatans (commonly known as Hindus) by asking “Why do Hindus pour milk on Shivling during the month of Shravan?“

They argue that the amount of milk ‘wasted’ on such a day can feed thousands of poor instead. Why this ‘excess’ then?
First of all, those who find this practice a wastage are adviced to use milk in a token way, by using a reduced and diluted form of it.
Now having said that, let’s examine the beliefs and logic behind such act and how right or wrong it is to call anyone a fool for following the custom.

According to the science of Ayurveda, every person has 3 components in them:
1) Vata (Air)
2) Kafa (Cough) and
3) Pitta (Acids)

All three elements are necessary for smooth functioning of our body. However, when the proportion of these components goes out of natural balance, the body begins to suffer under various ailments.

During the month of Shravan, the Vata component of a person gets higher in proportion. During that period, a person must avoid food that increases the Vata component. For example, green leafy vegetable contain higher amounts of Vata in them. [Jains also have Paryushan during this time and avoid green vegetables]

Thus a person is asked to avoid them during the rainy season (especially Shravan month) to avoid the ailments caused due to excess of Vata.

During the rainy season, the cattle also eat lots of green grass, and hence their milk is high in Vata and, in modern times, is succeptible to viral infections. Hence, milk is considered harmful during the Shravan month. Thus Ayurved advices us against consuming milk during Shravan.

In Sanatan Dharm, Bhagwan Shiv is known to consume the poison which came out during Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Oceans). Thus, it’s customary to offer whatever is poisonous to Bhagwan Shiv. So the Hindus offer milk over shivling (Sanskrit for symbol of Shiv) during the month of Shravan as it is considered akin to a poison by the science of Ayurved.

Hinduism says “Feed to others only what you can eat for yourself (Which means, do not offer to others what you will never consume), always give the best to others and do welfare for all. Always take care of the poor and feed them the fresh and healthy food”-(From the Vedas).

Now if we feed the milk or green leafy vegetables, which is poison during the Shravan, then it’s a sin as it will cause them diseases.
Hence, to the ignorant ones who do not know any better, let’s just clarify at once that Sanatan Dharm is a spiritual philosophy and a way of life. Science is something inherent to it and at the same time it’s a philosophy much beyond those realms.

Beyond the Ancient !!

Ancient Shiva Linga at Gaumukh Kund.

Gaumukh Kund is a sacred water body situated on the western part of the famous Chittorgarh Fort.
'Gaumukh' literally means mouth of cow and it has been named so because the water flows from the cow mouth shaped point.

On , a reminder that India is birthplace of Yoga and Yoga is intrinsically associated with Hinduism.

The skeleton you see in this picture is of a man buried in Padmasana Samadhi and has been excavated from Balathal (Udaipur district, Rajasthan). He dates back to 900 BC-700 BCE and belonged to Ahar Banas Culture of ancient Rajasthan.

The skeleton belonged to a man who was 35-40 years old when he undertook this Samadhi. He faces north and his grave was smeared with cow dung and ash. This is typically how Yogis are buried (not cremated) in India even today. This clearly shows that many aspects of traditional Yoga go back to at least 2700 years

The origin of the term "Tree hugger"
The first tree huggers were 294 men and 69 women belonging to the Bishnois branch of Hinduism, who, in 1730, died while trying to protect the trees in their village from being turned into the raw material for building a palace. They literally clung to the trees, while being slaughtered by the foresters. But their action led to a royal decree prohibiting the cutting of trees in any Bishnoi village. And now those villages are virtual wooded oases amidst an otherwise desert landscape.

Not only that, the Bishnois inspired the Chipko movement (chipko means “to cling” in Hindi) that started in the 1970s, when a group of peasant women in the Himalayan hills of northern India threw their arms around trees designated to be cut down. Within a few years, this tactic, also known as tree satyagraha, had spread across India, ultimately forcing reforms in forestry and a moratorium on tree felling in Himalayan regions.

Chandramouleshwara Temple in Karnataka, India

The Ishvara Temple (also spelt Ishwara or Isvara) in Arasikere town of the Hassan district in Karnataka state, India, dates to c. 1220 CE rule of Hoysala Empire. Arasikere (lit "Queens tank"; Arasi means "queen" or "princess" and kere means "tank" in the Kannada language) is located 140 km north of the historic city of Mysore and 41 km east of Hassan city. The temple, which is dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva, though modest in size and figure sculpture, is considered the most complex one in architecture among surviving Hoysala monuments because of its ground plan: a 16-point star-shaped mantapa (hall), in addition to an asymmetrical star-shaped shrine, whose star points are of three different types.

If not plundered, even the Nagara Style of Temples must have had the most beautiful “Sthambhas” like that of Hoyasala Temples.

This beautiful Sthambha with “Khandika Patta” (Hanging Bell Band) with one of the Rudras.

The Ganas called as “Bhaarakas” are at the bottom of the Sthambha bearing the weight.

This 1000 yrs old Sthambha is from the Maha Mandapa of Udayeswar Temple, Udaipur, Madhya Pradesh built during the reign of “Paramars”.

Deep within the jungles of Bandhavgarh, a centuries-old statue of Vishnu reclines beside a pond teeming with oxygen-producing cyanobacteria.

Called Shesh Shaiya by locals, it is believed to have been built by the Kalachuri dynasty of Tripuri, and is the only place in the whole forest that you are allowed to get off the vehicle and explore by foot.

Interestingly, the Bandhavgarh National Park derives its name from the most prominent fort of the area. Legend has it that Rama gave this fort to his brother Lakshmana to keep a watch on Lanka, hence the name Bandhavgarh (Sanskrit for brother's fort). The 2,000-year-old fort, in ruins now, is on a flat-topped hill with rocky slopes as steep as the walls of a fort.

Various dynasties are recorded to have ruled from the Bandhavgarh fort, including the Kalachuris. With most of the fort being inaccessible now, it is the tigers that get to rule the Bandhavgarh Fort
