How cool is the TKS black shirt? VERY. This TKS kiddo earned his black shirt a few years ago and is still CRUSHING IT. A couple of weeks ago, he told me that he was able to successfully play an entire game of chess in his mind.... 🤯

We had so much fun at the Chess Nuts Tournaparty! Congrats to all our tournament trophy-winners. And a big THANK YOU to all the TKS parents who brought their kids out to play and provided all the amazing snacks for Junk Food Mountain!

Our preschoolers work on different lessons each week and earn these corresponding, color-coded SillyBands. These “Little Geniuses” students end up with an armful of tangible reminders of just how much they’ve learned and just how far they’ve come! Not only are the bands perfect for this age group of kids (who love to collect things!), but they are something that each child can be proud of! We love helping parents foster inquisitiveness, good sportsmanship, and academic confidence.

The TKS City Coaches had such a great week gathering in Birmingham, Alabama for the TKS National Championship! Almost all of our cities in the USA were represented. Across the board, these coaches are so excited about school year 2022-23! We can’t even count how many young minds are going to be fired up for chess (and all the befits learning chess brings) this year! Sportsmanship, friendships, critical thinking skills, academic confidence, and fun. What’s not to love?

Here’s an exciting story about a local Vestavia business that is growing into a national business. Dr. David Brooks started The Knight School back in 2007 when he was a full-time high school teacher; he had permission to leave school about 3 minutes before the bell rang (his last period of the day was his free/planning period) and he’d hustle over to a couple of elementary schools to teach them chess in the afternoons. At that time, the idea of a “chess party” would have seemed strange - chess was supposed to be VERY SERIOUS and involve a lot of SHUSHING and taking notes - but once kids and parents heard about his revolutionary, silly, accessible, and laughter-infused chess classes, that idea became a reality. Kids flocked to The Knight School’s after-school chess program, and they have continued to love it as they learn about sportsmanship, critical thinking skills, and (of course) chess. Did you know that the colorful Tactix-Bands are more than just a fun thing to collect? In The Knight School's Elementary Program, which is our largest program, our “Tactic of the Week” chess curriculum is the most effective way to get kids very good at chess very quickly. Kids are driven to collect each colorful "Tactix-Band," and The Knight School harnesses this as one of its core engines that drive kids to learn and apply each different tactic during live chess play. Since mastery of each different chess tactic is demonstrated by the colorful wristbands each child wears, and since each tactic is represented by one specific color, and since the harder tactics are denoted by the darker, cooler colors, kids can literally look at each other and perceive the chess expertise levels of everyone in the room! And if parents want to know what their child has learned each week, they can just ask their child about the colorful bracelet he or she brought home!
