Zebrafish models of Mucopolysaccharidosis types IIIA, B, & C show hyperactivity and changes in oligodendrocyte state 04/08/2023

Zebrafish models of Mucopolysaccharidosis types IIIA, B, & C show hyperactivity and changes in oligodendrocyte state Sanfilippo syndrome childhood dementia, also known as mucopolysaccharidosis type III (MPS III), is a rare inherited lysosomal storage disorder. Subtypes of MPS III are caused by deficiencies in one of four enzymes required for degradation of the glycosaminoglycan heparan sulfate (HS). An inability t...

A median fin derived from the lateral plate mesoderm and the origin of paired fins - Nature 26/05/2023

A median fin derived from the lateral plate mesoderm and the origin of paired fins - Nature We identify that the larval zebrafish unpaired pre-anal fin fold is derived from the lateral plate mesoderm, can be readily duplicated, and thus may represent a developmental intermediate between median and paired fins.

We're excited to introduce our newest innovation in fish welfare monitoring - the Fish Welfare Biosensor! With just a drop of water, this non-invasive method can measure key compounds in the water, providing a complete picture of fish welfare without the need for invasive methods like taking blood samples or tissue biopsies.

In AQUACULTURE poor fish welfare can lead to reduced growth rates, increased susceptibility, and decreased overall health, ultimately leading to economic losses for the aquaculture industry.

In SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, it's important to ensure that zebrafish and other aquatic model organisms are healthy and well-cared for, as this can impact the validity and reproducibility of research results.

We are working with seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) as one of the most used aquaculture species in Europe, and with zebrafish (Danio rerio) which is the most used fish species in research. Neverthless, the use of our FishWelfareBiosensor may be used with other fish species in the near future.

Our product is perfect for aquaculture producers, researchers, national authorities, public aquarium managers, environmentalists, conservationists, consumers and the food industry, and even the pharmaceutical industry. By addressing the problem of non-invasive methods for evaluating fish welfare, our product has the potential to improve the health and well-being of fish in both aquaculture and scientific research settings.

Join us in revolutionizing the way we monitor fish welfare - with just a drop of water!

Have you heard about zebrafish before? These small fish are the second most used animals in biomedical research in the UK!

It is only in the last decade that zebrafish have become a fixture in the lab, after scientists realised that they had remarkable regenerative abilities and could live quite happily in the laboratory. Zebrafish also lay eggs that are almost transparent, so scientists can observe embryos developing without causing them any harm.

Multidimensional chromatin profiling of zebrafish pancreas to uncover and investigate disease-relevant enhancers - Nature Communications 15/04/2022

Multidimensional chromatin profiling of zebrafish pancreas to uncover and investigate disease-relevant enhancers - Nature Communications Alterations in cis-regulatory elements (CREs) can contribute to pancreatic diseases. Here the authors combine chromatin profiling and interaction points with in vivo reporter assays in zebrafish to uncover functionally equivalent human CREs, helping to predict disease-relevant enhancers.

New oligodendrocytes exhibit more abundant and accurate myelin regeneration than those that survive demyelination - Nature Neuroscience Neely et al. investigated the regeneration of different oligodendrocytes after demyelination. They found that newly generated cells exhibit much more proficient remyelination than those that survive demyelination, with implications for MS.

Testing on fish: how painful are the experiments?
All experimental procedures on animals are categorised by severity, which indicates the level of pain and suffering an animal may experience. The vast majority of experiments cause little or no pain. In 2020, 1.5% of experiments were classed as severe.

25/11/2021

Fish are the second most used animal in British scientific research. In 2020, a total of 375,532 procedures were carried out on fish, primarily for breeding purposes and to learn about biological processes and disease (basic research).
