Through hours of research and visiting leather tanneries, he learnt of the process of vegetable tanning- soaking natural tannins such as bark and fruit into the leather- which is lengthy and more expensive than traditional chrome-tanning which uses toxic chemicals such as chromium. However, this process produced leather that is not only environmentally-friendly with virtually no toxic waste, it also has a sweet smell. The search does not just stop there, he wanted to find leather that is also sustainable, so ideally he needed a tannery that used discarded hides from the meat-industry. These hides, while unwanted by the meat industry turned out to be ideal for leather craft as farm animals would receive proper nutrition and are more likely to have hides that are stronger and more durable. As consumers, we always go for quality and enjoy luxury, but many times that luxury comes at a cost. Here at Quinn, we make sure our leather comes from tanneries that get hides from sustainable sources and use eco-friendly tanning methods. All of our hides comes from animals that have been farmed for food, or have died naturally, and we use biodegradable, non-toxic chemicals during our tanning processes.
