A business update...

Now that my daughter is in college and I don't need the same level of flexibility, I have been thinking about a career pivot and have been applying for jobs that sound interesting and fun. I enjoy what I do but I'm starting to lean into the idea of having a little more job security until retirement. They say "the best time to apply for a job is when you have one". 🙂

No matter what happens, I plan to keep my license active and will still be taking on projects as time allows. However going forward, I will only be scheduling 2 weeks out at a time. This will accommodate getting client projects on the calendar while allowing for the potential need for a two week notice.

With that being said, each Friday evening, if I don't have any commitments lined up, I will open an additional week for scheduling. Currently, I'm booked through July 19th. Next Friday (July 12th), I will assess and see if I can open up the week of July 22-26. I'll continue this scheduling pattern each Friday so if you have a potential project and timeline flexibility, please don't hesitate to reach out for an estimate.

Thank you to everyone who has supported my business for the last 15+ years. 💙 We'll see what happens!

The original post below is almost 7 years old but my gratitude for Jeanne is still at the core of my business. As a one woman operation in my 16th year, I can't thank Jeanne enough for the positive influence that unexpectedly led to this career. Thank you Jeanne!! ❤️

WORDS HAVE POWER!

Sometimes we head down a certain path in life simply due to the encouragement of others. What someone says could make all the difference to ideas and possibilities you never considered.

Let me introduce you to Jeanne. She is THE INFLUENCE behind starting my business. It was about 2006 and we were connected by a mutual acquaintance (who knew I was fairly handy). Jeanne needed help installing smoke detectors and painting her daughters' bedroom. While I was working, Jeanne mentioned how I should consider doing this kind of stuff as a career... that there weren't contractors who took on such small jobs and how as a woman, she felt comfortable having me in her home.

Shortly after our visit, I mulled over her suggestion, called the CCB and started the process of obtaining my contractor's license. From there, Jeanne passed my name along to a co-worker, who passed my name to another and so on. Fast forward to current times and I'm in my 10th year of business solely through word of mouth. It all started with Jeanne!!

It had been 11 years since my original project with Jeanne. For the past month, I've had the pleasure of working for her again. I started her project on October 24th and just finished up today. After 22 days of being at her house, I'll miss our daily chats & visits. She started as MY ENCOURAGER. Now, she is my friend.

THANK YOU JEANNE!!!!

A few weeks ago I painted the ceiling & walls in the finished basement of this adorable home in NE Portland. If you or anyone you know are looking for a place, please take a look. My clients and their realtor, Olivia Rush with Living Room Realty were fantastic!

Open living on the main, with gas fireplace, custom shelving, and newly refinished hardwoods. The functional kitchen with quartz counters, SS appliances....

Frequently, we see posts regarding people offering services in the trades. For your protection as a home owner it's important to hire someone who is licensed, bonded & insured. In addition, once you know someone's CCB #, it's a good idea to search the business on Oregon's CCB website. Once there, you can verify if a license is active, if there are any unpaid debts, complaints, disciplinary actions or suspensions. If you are interested in a quick link to walking through this process with any business you are considering, please feel free to visit my "Hiring a Contractor" page on my website. :-)

Spent the last 2 days painting a garage. Even in a space meant primarily for storage, a fresh coat of paint can make all the difference. ;-)

Miller Paint recently launched their new Northwest Color Collection. A client I worked for recently chose "Verde" for a bedroom accent wall that was previously brown. It's so fun to work with vibrant colors!

Another project using Backdrop paint. Client went from gray to green with "Kismet". For more information on Backdrop & their color selection, visit www.backdrophome.com

A few weeks ago & per client request, I tried a new paint product (Backdrop). I was very nervous about the outcome since I had no experience with it's consistency, coverage etc.

I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome. There are 72+ curated colors and the paint is Green Wise Certified so it had very little odor. Cans are easy to use with the twist cap and durable handle. Colors are very rich and saturated. Packaging is biodegradable. Customer service was top notch.

I liked it so much it's been added to the "paint I'm willing to work with" list.

If you are interested in learning more about Backdrop, please visit www.backdrophome.com

***If you are interested in buying paint from them for your own DIY painting project, please message me and I'll connect you to some savings since I'm now a member of their trades program.

One cool thing they offer regarding samples is their 12" x 12" adhesives. They give you such a good perspective on the actual color and they are easily removed without damaging your wall.

Project photos attached.

If you need paint for a project and don't want to spend a bunch, my Miller Paint home store always has tons of mis-tints. They have interior, exterior, trim & door paint (great for furniture) and stains. Prices are amazing.

Local Friends: My client ordered the wrong color and I'm trying to help her recoup some of the paint cost. The color is "Let it Rain" #639 from Benjamin Moore and it's somewhat of a sea-foam green. Purchased on Saturday and hasn't been opened. Retail is $59.99 (my discount brought it to $49.99). Asking $40 OBO if this happens to be a color you like and you're in the mood for a DIY project. Thanks for looking!

Clients complete the hardest task of a project by choosing the color. I simply apply the paint. I especially love seeing how happy people become about transforming a certain space in their home.

This recent project involved a fresh white ceiling, touching up the trim & covering the brown walls with a vibrant blue.

So fun!

Finished this bathroom project today. My client couldn't wait to get rid of the red. She texted me to ask if it was too much to say that the bathroom is her favorite room in the house. ;-) Too cute!
Seeing how happy people feel after a transition is complete is definitely my favorite part of this work.

A unique project completed this week! I painted my first garage for clients who are turning the space into a hang out area. Cutting in with a brush around all the shelves & brackets was a welcomed challenge. :-)

Priming a Mural or Painting Over Dark Colors 22/08/2019

Not all primers are created equal!! If you are considering a DIY project where you'll be covering a dark wall or mural, you'll want to use a high hide / stain blocking primer. Additionally, you should have primer tinted to about 50% or 75% of the color you plan to use as the top coat. In the photos below, I actually used the tinted primer that was used in a siblings bedroom (also to cover a mural) because it was cost effective to both rooms. Tinting the primer will get you significantly closer to the desired outcome. Had this primer been a simple white primer, it may have taken at least 2 coats to hide the mural. This primer tinting rule can be used in many scenarios to get you closer to the desired outcome while often saving on the total cost of primer & paint.
