I got a suggestion from a member of the Central Coast Food Lovers about a shop at The North Entrance. It is part of the North Entrance Surf Life Saving Club called “ The Surf Shack co.”. The vibes were very positive, so we decided to drive out there and check it out. It is a fantastic location. Plenty of parking. The shop we were told underwent some renovations and has been open for just over three weeks.
There are a few tables in front of the shop, and a grassed in area adjacent to the building, with a few picnic tables and benches overlooking the beach with some fantastic views of the ocean.
I think that seafood was a secondary priority as the choices were limited. fish cocktails and pineapple fritters were not on the menu, so I opted for fish and chips and my wife settled on a fish burger. We sat down at one of the tables and waited for our order which was brought out to us after a reasonable amount of time. The portions I thought were quite generous.
I took my first bite, and for me it was just perfect. It was crispy and had that very satisfying crunch that I like so much. The colour was a nice golden brown. It was delicious with no oily taste or feel to it. The fish, which was Hoki, I thought was a tad dry. It was not as succulent as I have eaten in some of the other shops. However, the taste was fine, but would have been much better if the fish was a bit juicier.
The chips were not as crispy as I like, but they were all right and tasted OK.
My wife’s fish burger was made with a brioche bun which was nice and light. She said that this was the perfect combination and made the fish burger a delight to eat. “It was delicious”.

Today we went back to Umina to try out a shop called “Batty’s Takeaway”. It is also on West Street just a couple of blocks up the road from “Mum’s Seafood Kitchen at Umina”, last week’s encounter. As it is on a main road, parking is limited. However, we got lucky and managed to get a spot very close. We put in our usual order of fish cocktails and chips, but as they did not do pineapple fritters my wife decided on a pumpkin scallop.
We waited for a reasonable amount of time and picked up our order. There were a couple of tables inside the shop, but we decided to drive down to the beach which was just a couple of minutes away.
We found a table which was next to the Umina Surf Life Saving Club. Parking was not a problem as there were a lot of spots available.
We unwrapped our order and proceeded to have lunch.
The batter had a dark golden colour to it which I thought was just a bit overcooked. However, it was crispy with a nice crunch to it and didn’t have any oily taste to it. The fish was Hoki, but I found it to be somewhat dry. It did not have that nice succulent , juicy texture that I have found in other shops. I think the problem might have been that the pieces of fish were on a bit of the thin side and as a result of maybe cooking them a bit too long it may have tended to dry them out. The taste though was fine.
Th chips were not as crispy as I would like, and I thought were just OK.
The pumpkin scallop, although a tad oily (probably just needed to drain on the rack a little longer) had a nice crispy batter and “was very tasty and delicious”.

We had a lot of suggestions from Central Coast Food Lovers for fish and chip venues. One that came up a few times with some positive comments was “Ezy Deanz” in Narara. We had to do some shopping in Tuggerah so we decided to have lunch at "The Shed". We had the Poached Chicken Open Melt and a Grilled Vegie Open Melt. Both were very tasty. Looks like a lot of cheese but it was a nice thin layer covering the goodies underneath. The salad was delicious, and the chips were nice and crispy. A very enjoyable lunch

Went to "The Island Cafe" for lunch. We had the "Smashed" Avocado, Feta Cheese, Baby tomatoes and spinach on sourdough bread with a smear of balsamic vinegar And, a slider trio, pulled pork, chicken, and brisket, with a nice crispy side of chips Absolutely delicious. Great location and very friendly staff.

I have read a lot of comments about “Haven Beach Café” both good and bad. So, we have decided today to check it out for ourselves. We brought our granddaughter who just celebrated her 27th birthday and my six-year-old grandson for a birthday lunch. The location of this shop is fantastic. Big Park area. It was a nice sunny day, so we thought we would find a fish and chip shop that was close to water. So, we headed out to Gorokan to a shop called Ocean Blue.
