I had the honor of photographing this amazing creature back in 2010. We watched him lay in the forest with his youngest offspring right beside him. Magnificent beings worthy of our respect, and still one of my all time favorite wildlife encounters. My photo doesn't show Mwirima all that well, but his legacy lives on.
May he rest in peace.

Good interview on the ethics of wildlife photography, and one I agree with. I have always found that my best shots happen when the scene just unfolds, usually when you are getting more enjoyment from being "out there" than obsessing over that perfect shot. My basic rule of thumb is one I learned from every African Safari guide...If the animal changes their behavior, you are too close.

Don't Feed the Bears: Ethics in Wildlife Photography and Filmmaking After a marine biologist pleaded guilty to feeding orcas, longtime filmmaker Jeff Hogan weighs in on ethics in wildlife photography.
Just before last light, this amazing jaguar came out to have a look at the river...Had to push the ISO up to ludicrous speed, but still...
Quite literally, the shot of my dreams. Cannot believe I was fortunate enough to see something this amazingly beautiful.
In honor of World Rhino Day...Maybe they won't have to run one day...
From my trip to India in May - this huge male tiger walked past my vehicle at 6 feet away!! I switched from shooting portrait to landscape, and the movement got his attention, and this was his reaction. Needless to say, I didn't move much after that...
Well I'm here in Bandhavgarh National Park in India, and I just finished a days shoot, got lucky with a HUGE male tiger who came down to a water hole we had been watching for a couple hours. Got some really amazing shots, can't wait to get home and see what I really got!! Looking forward to tomorrow's drive.
Absolutely terrific show at the Chain of Parks Art Festival this weekend. Couldn't ask for better weather, and enjoyed speaking with everyone who came by.
