25 years later... 'The Prayer Engine'
This is the sound of a young singer finding his voice. Compared to the year before its almost some kind of Robert Johnson-esque re-invention. In reality it's the natural progress of working through that initial recording process where you allow politeness to contain your true spirit. You can hear here I am very much off the leash. It had been a long time coming. Counting the days, biding my time, writing and writing and writing. And singing and singing and singing; building that muscle - meeting the band I knew I was writing for and my massive respect for them as musicians and friends. I knew they were good but I wanted to provide repertoire that would make the alliance great. These are essentially live tracks recorded directly to an 8 track reel to reel - no auto pitch, beat detective blah blah blah. It was truly a magical experience in reflection. I don't know why it's taken so long to allow these songs to exist in the digital realm. Maybe it's because they existed on the cusp of that. Maybe it's because I wanted the lost album. The final chorus of Scars tells you that we believed in nothing but the moment we were playing. I can say it's a great album because I'm listening to the work of Tarek, Fraser and Peter. Lightning in a bottle. Maybe moody Dunedin sunsets. All these years later I can listen objectively and hear the sheer passion at play here.I find it inspiring and thank my younger self for giving me a kick up the proverbial.
This album gave me friendships and musical champions I am still privileged to enjoy to this day (I see you Temple-rs). It captures a time.
This was also a community effort. The logos inside the lyric sheet are the various Dunedin businesses that donated ACTUAl $$ to enable us to record the record. Gwillam from Ruby In The Dust gave us the space to record. Stephen Kilroy dropped over 2 U47 Neumanns and 5 Seinheissers in 3 supermarket plastic bags!
Last and certainly not least, this album is so very much Tarek's. He made it happen, he engineered it and his musicianship sings through every moment of it. Listening back to it all of these years later it's astonishing how hi-fi it is considering we were swimming in the deep-end ok recording knowledge; compression? True creativity is always waiting for you out in the deep-end.
The Prayer Engine, by Paul McLaney & The Avalanche Trio 10 track album
Opening track from ‘An Arrow Made of Air’ - this one’s inspired about the origin myth of Stonehenge. The Giant’s Dance.
Geoffrey of Monmouth described it as a megalithic stone circle, whose stones were used to build the neolithic Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain in England.
According to Geoffrey, the wizard Merlin disassembled a circle at Mount Killaraus in Ireland and had men drag the stones to Wiltshire, and had giants assemble Stonehenge.
'The Giant's Dance' - An Arrow Made Of Air From the self titled album
A video from ‘An Arrow Made of Air’ the album Oscar West and I released earlier this year. The songs and music are inspired by Amy Jeff’s ‘STORY LAND, A New Mythology of Britain’ - a beautiful book.
The footage is from ’The Exodus’ performed by The Mary Wigman School of Dance.

Happy release day. It was an absolute privilege and an artistic high water mark for me to collaborate with the creative force that is Proteins Of Magic on this song. It started in Wellington when I got stranded there at the beginning of the recent lockdown. Lots of time to consider things. This song is a meditation really. Many of us are currently separated from loved ones but we hold them in our hearts and minds as they in turn hold us. Time and space are irrelevant in that embrace.

Lockdown has taken some things away but it has also opened up some new spaces. On Monday October 4, Proteins Of Magic and I will be releasing our first collaboration 'The Ties That Bind Us' - a meditation on separation. The video Kelly has created is sublime. Please keep an ear and an eye out for it x
A new song for your consideration. Lots of crazy going on in the minds of many. Look after your friends who may be slipping down the rabbit hole -theories

Paul McLaney
Happy Birthday William from Aotearoa. 400 years after your passing and your "art alive still, while thy book doth live, And we have wits to read, and praise to give." I believe this to be the artistic high point of my career to date. Here are 3 of the songs from the night ('Sonnet 18', 'The Sound & the Fury' from MacBeth and 'Love' from Love's Labours Lost). While 'PLAY ON' was primarily a musical setting of the famous soliloquies I felt it important to recognise this ambition was borne of these tiny islands, a world away from Shakespeare's life; proof indeed of the immortality of his work. With that in mind we also set Te Haumihiata's translation of Sonnet 18 in Te Reo - "so long as men can breathe or eyes can see, so long lives life and this gives life to thee..." Indeed. Much love to all of the cast; beautiful souls one and all. RNZ will broadcast a wider selection from the concert after the 4pm news today. We are currently working on the studio album so hope to have more for you soon. Check out the Boosted NZ fundraising page for 'PLAY ON' the album. I think this will be the beginning of a wonderful journey.
