Some advice from garda.ie on how to reduce theft on your property

Secure all doors and windows; light up your home; use timer switches when out; store keys safely and away from windows; record details of all valuables; don’t keep large amounts of cash at home; use your alarm even when at home.

By taking some simple precautions you can reduce the risk of being burgled, increase the security of your home and garden and make life more difficult for any would-be intruders.

Your perimeter / boundary is your first line of defence. This includes your walls, fences, gates and hedges. Walls, fences and gates in the rear garden should be at least 1.8 metres (6 feet) high. It is often a good idea to fix a trellis to the top as it provides an extra barrier to negotiate and is also likely to break, if climbed, creating noise and attracting attention. Suitable thorny / prickly climbers could be grown through the trellis as an extra deterrent - see further information on defensive planting in the next section.

Ensure that side gates or doors are robust, locked with good quality padlocks or deadlocks and that they cannot be lifted off their hinges. Regularly check for damage or weakness and repair as necessary. The height of the gate / door should complement the height of the walls. A barrier consisting of a dense prickly hedge running along your perimeter / boundary is well worth considering. Most would-be intruders will be deterred from seeking entry through this route. There are many plants suitable for such a role. The following list is not exhaustive and is offered as a guide only - you should discuss with a horticultural expert at your garden centre or nursery.

This is happening around Gurranabraher for the last number of weeks. If you have any stories, info or evidence, please let us know. We would be happy to take a list of people affected to the gardai to raise the community concerns.

TEENS SETTING DOGS ON KIDS / 5 YEAR OLD ATTACKED

We're speaking to Amy whose 5 year old son was attacked by a German Shepherd dog yesterday as he played with friends in a Green area in Gurranabraher. Thankfully he only suffered scratches as there were adults nearby to pull the dog off him but she says two teens are constantly setting the dog on people in the area. Amy has notified the Gardai. She says next time the dog attacks, it might be a far worse outcome.

1850 104 106 / [email protected]

"Good morning Neil, Just thought I would update you on a situation yesterday. My 5 year old son was attacked by a dog yesterday, now the dog wouldnt be a year old yet. He was outside playing with his cousins as there was a family party. Would have been close to 15-20 kids playing in the green area ranging from 2 years old to about 6 years old. 2 teenagers come in to the estate and let this dog go off the lead into the group of kids. My son had no fear of dogs because we always have dogs so he was 1 of the only kids that didnt run away. The dog managed to get him on the ground and was trying to attack his face with his teeth. Thankfully there was adults that were able to get the dog away from my son before the dog caused serious damage to his face. He does have a few small scratches.I went over to gurranabraher guards to report this issue. The guard I spoke with took my details and that was it. That evening I was driving down the road and spotted these teens with the dog. I called through to the station and spoke with the same guard, he totally dismissed the incident and said he would get a car to them if he had one. Mind you I was passing the station and could see there was a car in the same spot as earlier in the day when I first reported the incident.
A number of people in gurranabraher have said they know these teens to see and they are forever trying to set this dog on people, kids and other dogs going passed. I've tried the dog warden this morning but I cant get an answer. I am very lucky that someone managed to get the dog off my son when they did or else we could be sitting in CUH with a very different outcome".
