"Adanna the poor girl" : Episode 2
Adanna's first day at school is a whirlwind of new experiences. The school, a modest building with worn desks and faded walls, feels like a palace to her. The bustling noise of children chatting and playing is both exhilarating and overwhelming. She clutches her new schoolbag tightly, her heart pounding with a mix of excitement and nerves.
Her teacher, Mrs. Adeyemi, a kind but stern woman, welcomes Adanna warmly. She introduces her to the class, and Adanna nervously meets the eyes of her new classmates. Some children smile at her, while others whisper among themselves. Adanna takes a deep breath and smiles back, determined to make a good impression.
The first lessons are challenging. Adanna struggles to keep up, especially in subjects like mathematics, where she has little prior knowledge. During recess, she feels a pang of loneliness as she watches other children play in groups. She sits under a tree, nibbling on the simple lunch her mother packed, feeling out of place.
Just as she begins to lose hope, a girl named Ayo approaches her. Ayo is friendly and curious, and soon the two girls are chatting animatedly. Ayo introduces Adanna to her friends, and they invite her to join their game. For the first time, Adanna feels a sense of belonging.
Over the next few weeks, Adanna's confidence grows. She wakes up early to study and stays up late to finish her homework. Mrs. Adeyemi notices her dedication and offers extra help after school. With each passing day, Adanna's skills improve. She starts to excel in reading and writing, and her math skills gradually catch up.
One afternoon, Adanna finds Mr. Okeke waiting for her outside the school gates. He has brought her a new book, a collection of African folktales. Adanna's eyes light up with joy, and she promises to read it every night. Mr. Okeke's belief in her fills her with renewed determination.
Meanwhile, back in the village, Adanna's parents work even harder to support her. Chidi takes on additional work in the fields, and Ngozi starts crafting more intricate items to sell at the market. Their sacrifices weigh heavily on Adanna, but she uses them as motivation to succeed.
One day, Mrs. Adeyemi announces a school-wide storytelling competition. Adanna, inspired by the folktales Mr. Okeke gave her, decides to participate. She spends every spare moment preparing, practicing her storytelling skills in front of Ayo and her other friends.
The day of the competition arrives, and Adanna is nervous but determined. She steps onto the stage, her heart racing. As she begins to tell her story, her voice wavers at first, but she soon gains confidence. She weaves a tale of bravery and perseverance, drawing from her own life and the folktales she has read.
The audience is captivated, and when Adanna finishes, they erupt into applause. She wins first place, and her prize is a set of new books and school supplies. More importantly, she has proven to herself and others that she belongs.
