What is Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) & How Can It Affect My Doberman?
Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in Doberman Pinschers is a challenging disease.
An inherited, irreversible heart muscle disorder that affects Dobermans more than any other breed, DCM can cause ventricular arrhythmia, erratic heartbeats, and sudden death. Normal heartbeats are interrupted by rapid beats that fire too closely together, subsequently shorting out the heart and the dog faints. About one-third of these dogs have no prior signs of the disease until they die. Some dogs recover, yet some die suddenly.
Dobermans with DCM also can develop congestive heart failure when the heart dilates to compensate for the weakened heart muscle. This causes the heart to hold a greater volume of blood, while its thinned walls continue to weaken. Fluid may back up in the dog’s heart, lungs, and abdomen. Signs of pulmonary edema include coughing, rapid breathing, and lethargy. By the time the characteristic clinical signs, such as weakness, lethargy, and coughing, appear, the disease may be advanced and the prognosis grim.
Due to the prevalence of the disease in the breed, the Doberman Pinscher Club of America recommends that dogs receive an echocardiogram screening when they are between 1 and 2 years of age and then be tested yearly, along with a baseline Holter monitor test.
DCM affects male and female Dobermans equally. Individual dogs vary in the age of onset, rate of disease progression, and frequency of sudden death versus congestive heart failure.

"Words cannot express how incredibly proud I am of this little dog!!! He blew me away this weekend at our first big overnight trial. He not only handled himself like an old pro with all the chaos by relaxing quietly in his crate both days (If you really know Finn you understand just how big a deal this is) but he also showed up 100% every time I asked him to go to work and had 8 for 8 beautiful qualifying searches earning himself 4 third places, and 2 fourth place finishes along with earning his SCN and SIN titles.
Thank you to everyone who has helped us along the way. And for Von Koepsel Dobermans for producing such a wonderful dog.

Ok folks we have an emergency situation and need a foster ASAP in the Pikes County PA area. Sydney's family is facing troubling times and was forced to leave their home due to safety concerns. Unfortunately, their new housing will not allow them to take Sydney with them. He is a beautiful fawn boy, 2 years old. Can someone help this fella out? Please head over to DVDPA.ORG today and apply to help us help him before he winds up in a shelter. He is your typical 2 year old boy with lots of energy and loves to play. He would do best with a fenced in yard to help get that energy out and maybe a female companion. No cats for this guy.
Shouting out to Elaine McAvoy and Jaz ~ CONGRATULATIONS!!
"last weekend Jaz got QQ number 4 and her MXJ and also her AKC obedience CD title with all three legs in the 190’s."
Huge Congratulations to Kelly, Potter and Charlie!!
"Charlie earned her FCAT title today! Thank you Jen Helm for introducing us to this sport, and thank you Ching-Yao Yu for bringing out the BEST in our girl! We are so proud!"
Thank you to the members that volunteered yesterday, and are volunteering today and Monday. Both while trialing and those who just came to volunteer without a dog.
from Tammy - This was the first Scent Work Trial I have ever been to and volunteered, I learned a lot, and it was fun to see how great the teams worked the scent. - Huge thank you to ALL of the volunteers and specially Nose-It-All Nose Work for a great day.
Photo from Saturday, August 31.... Thank you Sharon, Krisitn, Kelly M, Tammy and Barbara (not in photo), for all of your hard work.
No Pics of Barbara Novak and her girl Bally from our Scent Work Trial yesterday, however, we want to congratulate her and Bally on their amazing work.....and some awesome insight on Scent Work from Barbara....
"Quick observation after a LONG day at an AKC Scent Work trial with Bally. ODOR IS ODOR IS ODOR!
What do I mean by that? It means that no matter where or what odor is concealed in, a well trained dog with a solid odor obedience foundation should be able to find odor if it is accessible, meaning it is venting and presenting the dog with an odor cone/plume. Drug dealers put drugs in gas tanks, surround same with coffee and a myriad of other odors in an attempt to foil the detection dogs and it doesn't work.
Case in point today. I do very little AKC Scent Work, opting for NACSW instead. AKC has an element called Buried where, in Novice, the odor hide is buried in a container 4" down in the sand. Bally has never ever seen, never mind searched a Buried problem.
She did 2 Buried searches today, taking first place in each search. Both searches had an allowable time of 2 minutes. Time in her first search was 6.59 seconds and in her second she did it in 3.81 seconds.
Handlers have been known to freak out over Buried and Bally says ODOR IS ODOR IS ODOR!
Very proud of my girl who, BTW, passed 8 out of 8 searches today with multiple placements. Going back for another day tomorrow and I will post a full report on Monday. On my way to bed now."
Congratulations to Kristin and Pharoah, getting his "nose wet" at our scent work trial yesterday, in Lancaster, PA.
"This boy did amazing today!! He got his first Qual in Container Novice and his first and second Qual in Interior Novice! I’m so proud of him! "
Huge Congrats to club member Mary Chrusciel and Udo.
Udo achieved his DCAT yesterday (500 points) in Walkersville! He runs almost 28 mph!!
