Black Moss Press Presents Samantha Badaoa
Black Moss Press is proud to announce the upcoming publication of Windsor Essex County's youth poet
Hello everyone! This past school year the University of Windsor’s Publishing Practicum has worked in conjunction with Black Moss Press Publishing in the editing and publishing process of two poetry books. We have learned so much about the editing and publishing process as well as the hard work that it takes to bring a book to it’s fruition. Our group has had the pleasure of working closely with Windsor’s Youth Poet Laureate Samantha Badaoa who has taught us so much through her hard work and dedication. Unfortunately due to the Covid-19 pandemic, our book launch has been cancelled to ensure the health and safety of our community. With that being said please enjoy our virtual book launch!

Thank you to Julienne Rousseau for creating this beautiful video accompaniment to "You are Like a Church" by Samantha Badaoa.
Q: Why did you start writing poetry?
A: I began writing poetry as soon as I could write. When I was a kid, I used to fill notebooks with my thoughts and poems and then hide them underneath my bed. What first attracted me to the genre of poetry more than anything else was the freedom in form it gave me. I didn’t feel as bound to the idea of a “beginning, middle and end” in the same way that I did when I was writing short stories. With poetry there were no rules, I could tell my story and express myself in whatever way I wanted. Expression without expectation was, and still is, one of the most appealing things about poetry to me.
The Black Moss Press editing team is hard at work on my manuscript! ✍🏼
Meet Windsor’s first ever youth poet laureate Samantha Badaoa! Stay tuned for our next video where Sam describes what to expect from her upcoming book.
Q: What is the last piece of poetry you read that knocked you on your ass?
A: “These Branches Are Full and These Orchards Heavy” by Anis Mojgani
People are searching, people have always been searching. Seeking God, or the infinite or stillness. Anis’ poem highlights (beautifully) the sometimes vain and misguided attempts we make at understanding all that may be partially or completely unintelligible. This poem speaks to me greatly because it reminds me that dilution and judgement is not the way to find truth or meaning. That I must accept all the things I cannot and will never know and find beauty in the journey to or away from any answers I stumble across. This poem blends corporal and incorporeal images in a way that takes my breath away, Anis is truly a wordsmith and this poem has definitely knocked me on my ass anytime I’ve read it.
