Karan Ely, our 2023 Grand Marshal!

The 2023 Walton Fest Committee is proud to announce our 2023 Walton Fest Grand Marshal, Karen Ely! Karen spent most of her life in the Walton area, from the time she was born, until the date of her retirement from Sheridan’s Walton Tap. She has been a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church since her birth in Marion Township. Her Dad “Finally” allowed her to run around with the kids in the area at the age of eight years old. Karen attended Palmer School until fourth grade, then went to the St. Mary’s Hall here in Walton for schooling until eighth grade. She then attended Amboy for her High School years. She married her late husband Richard “Dick” Ely at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on June 15, 1963. Karen recalls Walton Tap having a totally different setting before it burnt down some years prior to her marriage. She said that prior to the fire there was a building where Sheridan’s Walton Tap sits now that was called “The Store.” This was a grocery store and bar all in one! Karen and Dick raised six children, Curtis, Ed, Dennis, David, Jimmy, and Susie, in the Walton area, and all six of them attended the Walton School. She cooked at the Walton School for the last seven years it was open. Her husband and children all assisted in building the banquet room addition to Walton Tap. She cooked alone in the original kitchen at Walton Tap until the larger kitchen was added. Karen worked in the Walton Tap kitchen for a total of 47 years, and worked for the Amboy school district as a head cook for 35 years before her retirement. There aren’t many that do not know Karen. She always has a smile on her face and is willing to do anything for anyone. Although she’s retired, everyone still loves her cooking. She still resides in the local area and enjoys spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

We are truly thankful for Karen Ely being the 2023 Walton Fest Grand Marshal! Saturday we will honor Karen at 1pm on the Main Stage. Please come celebrate with us!

Thank you,
Walton Fest Committee.
