Today is Teacher’s day (วันครู Wan Kruu) is celebrated every year on January 16th in Thailand, it is also a school holiday. It is the day that teachers gather together to remember their first teachers.
Thais believe that any field of work will have a teacher such as actors, dramatist, magician, astrologist and even boxers. Therefore, we need to have a Wai Kru ceremony to worship or respect the teacher. In Thailand they prepare offerings to the Buddha at the temples.
Every year on this day, the Prime Minister or an important poet will establish the motto for teachers.
The highlights of the day include religious activities, a ceremony of paying respect to teachers and activities to strengthen unity among teachers.
There is also วันไหว้ครู /Wan Wai Kru/ or Teachers’ Appreciation Day which is held shortly after the beginning of the term, on the first Thursday of January, as Thursday is traditionally the day of wisdom and teachers.
Students will help each other to arrange a flower tray for “Wai Kruu ceremony” (พีธีไหว้ครู) ; the children crawled up to the teachers on their knees, heads down, and presented them with flower tray with candles and incense (พานไหว้ครู). There are three specific flowers in them: 1. ดอกเข็ม (ixora) symbolizing wit (ความฉลาดหลักแหลม). 2. ดอกมะเขือ (eggplant flowers) symbolizing respect (ความเคารพ ความอ่อนน้อมถ่อมตน) 3. หญ้าแพรก [yâa prâek] (Burmuda Grass ; Wire Grass ; Dub Grass) symbolizing respect perseverance (ความอดทน). I remembered when I was a student, my classmates and I gathered to create พานไหว้ครู It was fun as you can see in the photos. These days seems more fun and creative. 😀
The Students also recite the wai kru chant (บทไหว้ครู) , which expresses respect for, and gratitude to the teachers, and asks for the teachers’ blessing of their studies.
The different between the words ครู/kruu/ and อาจารย์ /aa-jaan/ in Thai. They both means ‘teacher’.
The answer is “ครู /kruu/” is used to call all kinds of educators. However, in Thailand students call teachers who teach in higher education from high school, college or University level “อาจารย์ /aa-jaan/”, but many of those teachers teaching in higher education level still refer themselves with the word “ครู /kruu/”.
The origin of the word ครู/kruu/ comes from Pali word “ครุ /krú/” or Sanskrit “ คุรุ /kú-rú/” which means heavy (in duty or responsibility).
There is a Thai saying ครูคือแม่พิมพ์ของชาติ /kruu kue mâe-pim kăwng châad/ which means ‘teachers are the mold of the nation’

Do you know any ways to wish someone a ‘Merry Christmas’ in Thai?
Christmas is the annual commemorative festival of Christ’s birth in the Western Christian Church. It takes place on December 25th and is usually celebrated with much food and fanfare! However, not all cultures celebrate Christmas. In some countries, Christmas is not even a public holiday! However, many countries have adapted Christmas and its religious meaning to tally with their own beliefs, or simply in acknowledgment of the festival’s importance to other cultures. If you want to impress native Thai speakers with culturally-appropriate Christmas phrases and vocabulary, I will teach you the most important ways to wish someone a ‘Merry Christmas’ in Thai!
To say “Merry Christmas” in Thai is:
สุขสันต์วันคริสต์มาส /sùk-sǎn wan krít-mâat/
The word “สุขสันต์ /sùk-sǎn/” is like “happy” and “วันคริสต์มาส /wan krít-mâat/” is like Christmas day. Then สุขสันต์วันคริสต์มาส /sùk-sǎn wan krít-mâat/ means “Happy Christmas”.
Also if you would like to wish someone “Happy New Year”, in Thai we say:
สุขสันต์วันปีใหม่ /sùk-sǎn wan bpii mài/
The word “ปี /bpii/” means “year” and “ใหม่” /mài/ is “new” so สุขสันต์วันปีใหม่ /sùk-sǎn wan bpii mài/ means “Happy New Year”.
Another way to say Happy New Year is สวัสดีปีใหม่ /sà-wàt-dii bpii mài/.

Khao Daeng Viewpoint...Hard work but worth it...in Kuiburi, Prachuap Khirikhan :)
Located a short ride from the main park headquarters in the park’s southern reaches, Khao Daeng ("Red Mountain") is the best place in Sam Roi Yot to get a solid hike with breathtaking views as your reward.
The trail begins just off the main road and climbs steeply up to the 157-metre-high lookout, where you can sit back and enjoy northern vistas over the mountains and shrimp farms down below, and eastern views out to the Gulf. Come very early for what’s sure to be a memorable sunrise (no, we didn’t get up to vouch for it). It’s quite a hard climb but well worth it.
Take plenty of water, do not go alone, and pass on climbing if it has rained recently. The trail is not very clearly marked and there were no national park officials on site during our visit. The hike takes around 45 minutes for those in average shape. Be sure that you reach the true summit -- look out for a wooden sign there -- as a few decoys dot the trail.

::Fun facts about Loy krathong::
1. The four components of a krathong are symbols of Buddhism. The candle is a symbol of knowledge and wisdom. The joss stick is a symbol of purity and sympathy. The flower represents worship of monks who are disciples of Buddha. The worshipping item is used to make merit for deceased ancestors.
2. Strands of hair, nail clippings or even bits of clothes that one doesn't use anymore are often put into a krathong to get rid of the bad stuff of the past.
3. Coins are added to krathong to bring wealth and as a way of making merit.
4. For the romantic at heart or young couples, Loy Krathong is the time to make a wish for happiness together.
::Advice: Buy krathongs made of natural materials, including banana leaves, banana tree bark, spider lily plants and bread, instead of Styrofoam, glossy paper and brightly hued petals.

Flooding in Ubon Ratchathani, north-east Thailand, has been declared the worst in 17 years, with water levels in the Moon river beating the previous record set in 2002, and an additional 60 water pumps now installed. If you are in Thailand, flood and emergency phrases you may start to use more often. Today I have some phrases about flooding that you may hear.
1. ที่บ้านของคุณน้ำท่วมไหม /têe-bâan-kŏng-kun-nám-tûam-măi/
Has your house flooded?
2. ท่วมแล้ว คะ/ครับ /tûam láew ka/kráp/ Yes, it’s flooded.
3. ไม่ ยังไม่ท่วม /mâi yang-mâi-tûam/ No, not yet.
4. แถวบ้านเป็นยังไงบ้าง /taew-bâan bpen yang-ngai-bâang/
How is your neighborhood?
5.ท่วมหมด /tûam-mòd/ It’s completely flooded.
6. ยังแห้งอยู่ /yang hâeng yòo/ It’s still dry.
7. ท่วมนานมั้ย /tûam naan máai/ Has it been flooded long?
8. ท่วมประมาณหนึ่งอาทิตย์ /tûam bprà-maan nèung aa-tít/
About a week.

Tomorrow it will be Mother’s Day in Thailand 😊 It is celebrated on August 12th, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s birthday. It’s a national holiday in Thailand.
A giving to monks forms a meaningful part of the traditional Mother’s Day celebrations. Early in the morning, ceremonies are held to give offerings of food to Thailand’s saffron-robed Buddhist monks. Schools in Thailand typically host a Mother’s Day ceremony. On the special day, mothers come to their child’s school and each child kneels at his or her mother’s feet, paying respect to mom for all that she has done for them. It’s very common to see mothers wiping tears from their eyes and many children doing the same in this joyous and proud moment. Young children create their own handmade card to gift their mothers.
Children also give their mother a special gift or take mom out for a special meal. Some restaurants have special promotions on this national holiday so that children can enjoy their happy times with their mothers.
A traditional Mother’s Day gift in Thailand is jasmine- a flower that resembles motherhood. Called dok mali in Thai (ดอกมะลิ Jasmine is used in worship and is also seen as symbol of purity and gentleness, this delicate white flower is imbued with a sweet perfumed fragrance.
Since my mother isn’t with me, this year I take my father to Nakhon Nayok for lil trekking 🙂

It will be New Year’s Day soon. So I would like to say Happy New Year! It is the Festival to go home to meet family in their home provinces. To celebrate New Year’s Day, I bring you a short history of New Year’s Day in Thailand. In fact, there are many stories that you might not know about the Thai Festival of New Year’s Day.
Originally Thai’s took New Year’s Day to be the waning days of the lunar month, which falls on the first evening of January as our New Year’s Day. Later on this was changed follow to the Brahman’s calendar. The Brahman state that this falls on the first full moon of the 5th month (April) as our New Year’s Day which matched with Songkran Day. So, previously we regarded Songkran Day as Thai New Year’s Day. Later we had to consider a change in the New Year once again. Recently this was changed to coincide with the 31st December – following the widely accepted Gregorian calendar. Why:
– It is not inconsistent with Buddhism in the day, month that we celebrate or make a merit in the New Year.
– Abolition of the belief of the Brahman within Thai Buddhism.
– To match with the international countries, using the 1st January as the New Year.

– Celebrate New Year with family
– Make a merit at the temple
– Send New Year’s Card or SMS to friends
– Wish everyone a Happy New Year
