Ramadhan and mental health,

Fasting during Ramadan is only meant for people who are physically and mentally well enough.

Ramadan is however not only about abstaining from food. You also avoid harmful speech such as talking ignorantly or indecently, and also shun negative actions such as arguing or fighting. There is evidence that kindness can reduce stress and improve our emotional wellbeing.

And for those who can fast,a recent study demonstrated that fasting in the month of Ramadan has been effective in diminishing stress, anxiety, and depression levels.

Echoing countless studies on the subject, a report released today that social media could be playing a significant role in a mental health crisis affecting youth today.
In a 19-page report, Dr. Vivek Murthy said that whilst it’s too early to understand fully just how harmful social media is to the young, “There are ample indicators that social media can also have a profound risk of harm to the mental health and well-being of children and adolescents.”

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and it’s a further opportunity to create awareness on the potential benefits of Recognizing risk factors early on can to help families step in with support and help prevent issues down the line.

Its goes without saying that the rates of mental health challenges among young people are soaring, with 1 in 4 teens being diagnosed with a mental health disorder.

Mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, ADHD and bipolar disorder can be risk factors for substance use... and substance use can increase the risk for these and other mental health problems.

Alcohol and other substances mask symptoms such as feeling anxious, depressed or irritable – which can make mental health problems worse over time.
People who struggle with a mental health challenge may use substances for many reasons, including to reduce:

Stress
Emotional or physical pain
Anxiety
Sleep issues
What are some warning signs that a loved one is struggling with their mental health?

Use of substances such as alcohol, ni****ne or ma*****na
Changes in sleep or eating patterns
Frequent mood swings
Intense fear or worries that get in the way of daily life
Prolonged feelings of sadness or hopelessness
Difficulty focusing for prolonged periods of time
How can I let my child or loved one know that they can talk to me about their mental health struggles?

Offer to listen
Validate how they are feeling
Ask how you can best support them
Offer to find help if needed
