US Defense Secretary Ash Carter has said the alliance is pondering deploying a ground force in Eastern Europe to deter Russia. Carter's on a trip to Germany, as NATO prepares to appoint a new top general for Europe.
Germany may send troops to Lithuania to reassure NATO's Eastern European allies, according to media reports. But Berlin is also wary of provoking Russia with a stronger military presence.
If anyone is prepared to handle the diverging views on how to deal with Russia it is Scaparratti, said his former US army comrade Swan. "He is a very thoughtful individual," he said. "People in the NATO community will appreciate him as an inclusive leader meaning that he listens to all sides, wants and seeks input from all parties, before making decisions."
Russia is really not in a position to challenge the West and expand this war
