UC WEBMASTERS BRACE FOR UPHILL CLIMB IN FINALS REMATCH WITH MIGHTY UV LANCERS

Revenge is on top of their minds. There's no question about that.

But the UC Webmasters gamely admitted that it will be a tall order for them as they go up against the unbeaten defending champion UV Lancers in the highly anticipated finals rematch of the CESAFI Season 23 Men's Basketball Tournament starting tomorrow, December 12, at the Cebu Coliseum.

Last season, the Webmasters made it to the championship for the first time since 2017 but their dream of ending their five-year title drought was shattered by the Lancers, who edged them two games to one, in their best-of-three series.

Now they're back, facing each other again in the ultimate stage of competition.

Certainly, the Webmasters have some score to settle against the Lancers, who outgunned them, 67-55, in their first and only encounter thus far this year.

And they have to play with their hearts out and pull all the stops for them to succeed.

UC head coach Atty. Kenneth Kernn Atilano Sesante very well knows that.

“The finals rematch against UV will be an uphill battle. They are undefeated so far this season. They are a solid team team, and they have good shooters and good rebounders," said Sesante.

Tough as it may seem, the Webmasters are all set and ready to overcome the challenge that lies ahead of them with high hopes of grabbing the coveted crown they desired from the beginning of their campaign.

“We will try our very best to contain their scorers and fight for every rebound. We need to keep the game close and hope the end game breaks will come our way," continued Sesante. | via University of Cebu Webmasters Collegiate Basketball Team

In a devastating accident just fourteen days before Christmas, four individuals lost their lives in a fire that broke out at a fireworks warehouse on Monday, December 11, 2023, in Sitio Naga, Babag, Lapu Lapu City.

The victims include the warehouse owner, Chito Berdin, 58, known for creating aerial fireworks, along with Gwen Berdin-Lucero, Arjay Escubia, and Christian Monsanto.

While six individuals sustained third-degree burns in the accident. The injured, including 7-year-old Renier Berdin,Jade Rasonabe, Justine Llanas, Julito Inoc, Maria Johanna Berdin and Joanna Berdin, were promptly rushed to the hospital by the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRMMO).

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard "Ahong" Chan clarified that the incident took place in Berdin's storage facility, commonly known as a "bodega," where fireworks were stored. He emphasized that it wasn't a factory, underlining the strict prohibition of firework factories near residential areas due to the potential hazards they pose.

“We prohibit the establishment of firework factories in close proximity to residential areas. One of the prerequisites for obtaining a business permit for such enterprises is ensuring a considerable distance from residential dwellings. Regarding today's unfortunate incident resulting in the loss of four lives, we will initiate a thorough investigation into the matter,” Mayor Chan stated.

Despite the unfortunate incident, Mayor Chan expressed that firework and firecracker vendors would still be allowed to display their products, given the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations. However, he emphasized strict compliance with safety policies.

“They can still display, but they need to comply with the requirements of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP). They are required to have water on the side, water barrels in their areas, and designated display areas,” Chan outlined.

The fire resulted in the damage of eight structures, with an estimated total cost of 300,000 pesos.

Assuring support, Mayor Chan stated that the City Government, through the City Social Welfare and Development Office, will extend assistance to the families affected by the Babag fire.|

The 40th Anniversary event, held on Saturday, December 9, 2023, featured performances by Izarzuri Vidal, Liana San Diego, Mao Ka Guitars, USC Dance Troupe, and Liturgical Yodelers of USJR.

In attendance at the anniversary event were Cebu City Vice-Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia and Department of Tourism Undersecretary Ferdinand Jumapao. Both the City of Cebu and the Department of Tourism had supported numerous Casa Gorordo activities and advocacies.

In recognition of its role in raising appreciation for heritage and culture, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines conferred National Historical Landmark status on the museum in 1991.

Apart from a strong advocacy for heritage and culture, the museum was actively involved in other Apartunity-oriented activities, including disaster response. It served as a hub for RAFts Comster response initiatives, dispatching relief goods for distressed families during typhoons and other incidents.

IMEE: COLLATERAL DAMAGE RISK RISING FOR FILIPINO SEAFARERS

Senator Imee Marcos pressed the Department of Foreign Affairs and Department of Migrant Workers for a long-term strategy to negotiate the release of abducted Filipino seafarers as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict expands beyond the Gaza Strip.

Filipino seafarers were again among the hostages in Sunday's hijacking incident in the Middle East, just a week after Yemen's Houthi rebels seized an Israeli-linked cargo ship.

Marcos, who chairs the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, said the lives of Filipino seafarers now face higher risks as Israel's attacks in Gaza could draw in more militant groups seeking to avenge the deaths of thousands of Palestinians.

“There's no end in sight to this conflict and more Filipino seafarers could become collateral damage. The ongoing truce to release hostages on both sides is temporary," the senator explained.

She also warned that the pro-Palestinian Houthi rebels have threatened to target more ships with links to Israel.

Filipino seafarers comprise 25% of those employed in the global maritime industry, with almost half a millon serving on cargo and cruise ships.

The sea hijackings took place in the Red Sea and the adjoining Gulf of Aden - a crucial shipping route connecting Europe with the Middle East and Asia.

Marcos also urged the DFA to take great care in its diplomatic positions, especially as a member of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The Philippines' abstention from a UNGA resolution calling for a humanitarian pause in Israel's attacks in Gaza "has not gone unnoticed" among Arab nations and could affect future negotiations on the release of Filipino hostages, she said.

"Our alliance with the United States and its foreign policies in the ongoing conflict complicate our own. But Filipino interests come first and must be upheld," the senator emphasized.

Passengers now may avail up to three (3) pieces of baggage and choose from 20kg, 24kg, 28kg, or 32kg variants. Previously, CEB passengers could only purchase up to two (2) pieces of any combination of 20kg or 32kg baggage allowance.

Customers may buy the pre-paid bags as they book their flights and add additional baggage allowance via the Manage Booking portal using their MyCebuPacific accounts.

Customers who opt for a “GO Easy” or “GO Flexi” option only need to select “Upgrade” on the baggage included in their bundle. Meanwhile, customers who choose the “GO Basic” option will first have to select the CEB baggage in the add-ons page after locking in their flight dates.

“Cebu Pacific always strives to be customer centric. We updated our baggage policy so that passengers can have greater control over their baggage allowance at lower rates than current airport charges. This could help our customers lessen their expenses and experience a faster bag drop at the airport,” said Candice Iyog, CEB Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer.

CEB advises its passengers to book their flights online by creating a MyCebuPacific account to get notifications about their upcoming trips, manage their bookings, access their Travel Funds, among other features.
