HOLY MASS READINGS SUNDAY 20 AUGUST 2023

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Lectionary: 118

Entrance Antiphon Ps 83: 10-11
Turn your eyes, O God, our shield;
and look on the face of your anointed one;
one day within your courts
is better than a thousand elsewhere.

(Sign of the Cross
All make the Sign of the Cross as the Priest says:)

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

The Gloria
Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to people of good will.
We praise you,
we bless you,
we adore you,
we glorify you,
we give you thanks for your great glory,
Lord God, heavenly King,
O God, almighty Father.
Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son,
Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,
you take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us;
you take away the sins of the world,
receive our prayer;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father,
have mercy on us.
For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High,
Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father.
Amen.

Let us pray.
O God, who have prepared for those who love you
good things which no eye can see,
fill our hearts, we pray, with the warmth of your love,
so that, loving you in all things and above all things,
we may attain your promises,
which surpass every human desire.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word

First Reading
Is 56:1, 6-7
Thus says the LORD:
Observe what is right, do what is just;
for my salvation is about to come,
my justice, about to be revealed.

The foreigners who join themselves to the LORD,
ministering to him,
loving the name of the LORD,
and becoming his servants—
all who keep the sabbath free from profanation
and hold to my covenant,
them I will bring to my holy mountain
and make joyful in my house of prayer;
their burnt offerings and sacrifices
will be acceptable on my altar,
for my house shall be called
a house of prayer for all peoples.
The word of God
Thanks be to God

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 67:2-3, 5, 6, 8
R. (4) O God, let all the nations praise you!

May God have pity on us and bless us;
may he let his face shine upon us.
So may your way be known upon earth;
among all nations, your salvation.

R. O God, let all the nations praise you!

May the nations be glad and exult
because you rule the peoples in equity;
the nations on the earth you guide.

R. O God, let all the nations praise you!

May the peoples praise you, O God;
may all the peoples praise you!
May God bless us,
and may all the ends of the earth fear him!

R. O God, let all the nations praise you!

Second Reading
Rom 11:13-15, 29-32
Brothers and sisters:
I am speaking to you Gentiles.
Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles,
I glory in my ministry in order to make my race jealous
and thus save some of them.
For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world,
what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?

For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.
Just as you once disobeyed God
but have now received mercy because of their disobedience,
so they have now disobeyed in order that,
by virtue of the mercy shown to you,
they too may now receive mercy.
For God delivered all to disobedience,
that he might have mercy upon all.
The word of God
Thanks be to God

Gospel acclamation
Alleluia
Cf. Mt 4:23
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Jesus proclaimed the Gospel of the kingdom
and cured every disease among the people.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel
Mt 15:21-28
At that time, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.
And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out,
"Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David!
My daughter is tormented by a demon."
But Jesus did not say a word in answer to her.
Jesus' disciples came and asked him,
"Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us."
He said in reply,
"I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."
But the woman came and did Jesus homage, saying, "Lord, help me."
He said in reply,
"It is not right to take the food of the children
and throw it to the dogs."
She said, "Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps
that fall from the table of their masters."
Then Jesus said to her in reply,
"O woman, great is your faith!
Let it be done for you as you wish."
And the woman's daughter was healed from that hour.
The Gospel of the Lord
Praise be to you, Lord Jesus Christ

The Creed
The Nicene ("Niceno-Constantinopolitan") Creed
I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God,
Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
At the words that follow, up to and including ‘and became man’, all bow.
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Communion Antiphon Ps 129: 7
With the Lord there is mercy;
in him is plentiful redemption.

Or

Jn 6: 51-52
I am the living bread that came down from heaven, says the Lord.
Whoever eats of this bread will live for ever.

Prayer after Communion
Let us pray.
Made partakers of Christ through these Sacraments,
we humbly implore your mercy, Lord,
that, conformed to his image on earth,
we may merit also to be his coheirs in heaven.
Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Amen.

Blessing
The Lord be with you.
And with your spirit.
May almighty God bless you,
the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Dismissal
Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord.
Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.
Thanks be to God.

Evening Prayer
Into thy hands, Mary, I commend my body and my soul, I ask thee to provide for them and to protect them. I ask thee to protect them from the evil one. I ask thee enlighten my mind, strengthen my will, and refrain my appetites by grace. Our Lady and St. Michael, call down from Heaven the legions of angels under your command to protect me; I ask of thee all the things I ask of my Guardian Angel. My Guardian angel, under thy intellectual and volitional protection I place my body. I ask thee to illumine my mind and refrain my appetites. I ask thee to strengthen my cogitative power, my memory and my imagination. Help me to remember the things I should and not remember the things I should not. Help me to associate the things I should and not to associate the things I should not. Give me good clear images in my imagination. I ask thee to drive away all the demons that might affect me while I sleep (or throughout the course of the day). (Help me to sleep and, if thou should deem it prudent, direct my dreams. Help me to arise refreshed). Amen.

Daily Gospel Readings
'Children were brought to Jesus
that he might lay his hands on them and pray.
The disciples rebuked them, but Jesus said,
"Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them;
for the Kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."
After he placed his hands on them, he went away.'

Prayer of the Day for Monday, January 16, 2023
A Child's Prayer:
O Almighty God, who hast given unto me my father and mother, and made them to be an image of Thine authority, and love, and tender watchfulness; and hast commanded me to love, and honor, and obey them in all things: give me grace cheerfully and with my whole heart to keep this Thy law.
Help me to love them fervently, to honor them truly, to yield a ready obedience to their commands, to comply with their wishes,
to study their happiness in everything, and to bear their rebukes with patience and humility. Deliver me O God, from pride,
rebellion and willfulness, from passion and stubbornness, from sloth and carelessness. Make me diligent in all my duties and studies, and patient in all my trials; that so living, I may deserve to be Thy child, who art our Father in Heaven.

DATE: FRIDAY JUNE 17 2022

THEME: LOVE AND SUBMISSION IN MARRIAGE I

MEMORISE:

So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
Ephesians 5:28

READ:
Ephesians 5:21-33

21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:

30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

MESSAGE:

Many men complain that their wives are not submissive to them. I have been married for over fifty-four years now, and I have also been privileged to be used by God to help resolve many marital issues from experience and the word of God.

In a Christian marriage, wives are required to be submissive to their husbands as unto the Lord (Ephesians 5:22). However, over the years I have observed a number of reasons why some wives fid it difficult

THEME: DON'T INTERFERE WITH GOD'S PLAN

MEMORISE:

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:9

READ: MATTHEW 26:39 -42
39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

40 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?

41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.

MESSAGE:
Occasionally, what God has for your life may contradict everything you want, but He is your manufacturer, He made you for a certain purpose and whether you believe it or not, fulfilling that purpose is the best thing that can ever happen to you. When my Father-in-the=Lord mentioned to me, after he returned from a trip to Israel, that God told him to ordain me, my wife and I fasted for fourteen days, praying that God would not let that happen. At that time, my monthly salary was more than the entire income of the Redeemed Christian Church of God. I had just escaped poverty and I did not want to go back to it. Today, I thank God that He didn’t answer that prayer – not because of prosperity, but because of the joy of seeing how many people are blessed. There are certain things money cannot buy. Don’t interfere with God’s plan for your life, let His will be done. Be like David who said in Psalm 31:15:

My times are in thy hand…

Don’t interfere with God’s plan for your children. You may have plans for your child, but you must recognize that you did not make him or her – God did and He had a purpose for bringing that child into the wo

THEME: THE NEED FOR COUNSELLORS

MEMORISE:

Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety. Proverbs 11:14

READ: PROVERBS 13:10
Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.

PROVERBS 15:22 Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.

MESSAGE:

A counsellor is somebody who has a lot of knowledge in a particular field and is willing to share that knowledge with others who need it to solve their problems. Sometimes, a counselor is a professional in a particular field of practice and sometimes, it is someone with vast experience in an area of life. Whatever the case is, he or she has the knowledge that you need to solve your problems. When you have counsellors in virtually every area of life, you have the knowledge you need to solve your problems.

Going by today’s Bible readings, you should know straightaway that you need counselors in any field of your life where you may be lacing in some knowledge. For example, if you don’t know the law so well and you need to draw an agreement or do anything that requires deep understanding of the law, then you should get a lawyer, you can find a book or an article on that issue and study it. The knowledge you would gain from studying such materials would provide the counsel you need. If you are having issues in your marriage don’t know how to resolve them, why don’t you look for a godly marriage counselor to learn what you need to do: if you are having issues with your finances, they look for a finance expert to help you out. If you need help about something spiritual, talk to your Pastor. Some people, however, deny that they lack the required knowledge to solve their problems, while some who admit that they need knowledge go in search of it in the wrong places. Bothe categories of people described above are clearly headed for destruction.

OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL 2022
DATE: FRIDAY, MAY 6TH, 2022
TOPIC: CONNECTED FOR FRUITFULNESS

MEMORISE:
“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” - (John 15:5)

READ: John 15:1-10 (KJV)
1. I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
2. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
3. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
4. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
5. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
6. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
7. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
8. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
9. As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.
10. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

MESSAGE:
The Bible reading of today tells us that abiding in Jesus Christ is the secret of bearing good fruit. This is why being born again is just the beginning of a life of fruitfulness; abiding in Jesus Christ in unbroken continuity is the secret of fruitfulness. How then can we abide in Jesus? John 15:7-8 says:
*"If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples."*

Here we discover three things: One, Jesus is the secret behind true fruitfulness and wit

Hello all,

Happy feast day to all born, baptized and married today

Happy feast day to all Priests, Deacons, Seminarians, Monks, Nuns, Rev Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus

Happy feast day to all children of the Blessed Virgin Mary, especially all who recite Her Holy Rosary with true devotion.

Happy feast day to all named Stephen and parents and friends of all named Stephen.

Happy feast day to all parents who have lost their children

Today 16th of August marks the liturgical memorial of King Stephen I

King Stephen I, in (Hungarian is I. (Szent) István)

In Latin: he is known as Sanctus Stephanus

Saint King Stephen is also known as Saint Stephen the Great

He is also referred to as Saint Stephen of Hungry

He was born between year 967/969/975 in the town of Esztergom

Catholic History confirms that he was born and named Vajk

He was the Grand Prince of the Hungarians from the year (997–1000)

He was the first King of Hungary from the year (1000–1038)

His father was Grand Prince Géza of Hungary and his mother was Sarolt, daughter of Gyula of Transylvania a Hungarian nobleman who had been baptized in Greece.

Though his mother Sarolt was baptized into the Orthodox Christian faith at her father's court in Transylvania by the Greek bishop Hierotheos, she did not persist in the religion.

According to his legends, Vajk was baptized a Christian by Saint Adalbert of Prague (whose feast we celebrated on the 23rd of April)

Catholic tradition informs us that Vajk was given the baptismal name Stephen (István) in honour of the original early Christian Martyr Saint Stephen

When Stephen reached adolescence, Great Prince Géza convened an assembly where they decided that Stephen would follow his father as the monarch of the Hungarians.

This decision, however, contradicted the Magyar tribal custom that gave the right of succession to the eldest close relative of the deceased ruler.

Stephen married Giselle of Bavaria, the daughter of Henry II the Wrangler in or after t

Daily Gospel Readings
'At that time Jesus came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town.
Now a man there named Zacchaeus,
who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man,
was seeking to see who Jesus was;
but he could not see him because of the crowd,
for he was short in stature.
So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus,
who was about to pass that way.
When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said,
“Zacchaeus, come down quickly,
for today I must stay at your house.”
And he came down quickly and received him with joy.
When they saw this, they began to grumble, saying,
“He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner.”
But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord,
“Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor,
and if I have extorted anything from anyone
I shall repay it four times over.”
And Jesus said to him,
“Today salvation has come to this house
because this man too is a descendant of Abraham.
For the Son of Man has come to seek
and to save what was lost.”'

Prayer of the Day for Monday, September 29, 2021
Serenity Prayer:
O God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time. Accepting hardships as the partway to peace. Taking, as he did, the sinful world as it is, not as I would have it. Trusting that he will make all things right if I surrender to His will; that I may be reasonably happy in this life, and supremely happy with Him forever. Amen

David didn't submit a CV but God mentioned him to Samuel. May God mention you to someone who will take you to your next level.

Evening Prayer
O my God, at the end of this day I thank You most heartily for all the graces I have received from You. I am sorry that I have not made a better use of them. I am sorry for all the sins I have committed against You. Forgive me, O my God, and graciously protect me this night. Blessed Virgin Mary, my dear heavenly mother, take me under your protection. Saint Joseph, my dear Guardian Angel, and all you saints of God, pray for me. Sweet Jesus, have pity on all poor sinners, and save them from hell. Have mercy on the suffering souls in purgatory... (followed by an Act of Contrition).
Act of Contrition
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven, and the pains of hell; but most of all because they offend Thee, my God,
Who are all good and deserving of all my love.
I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace,
to sin no more and avoid the near occasions of sin. Amen.
