A few years ago, the Museum of Art - DeLand was gifted a sculpture titled “Tar Rose" by prominent artist Dennis Oppenheim. It currently sits on the former Children’s Center property but will soon be relocated to a site near the University Avenue entrance to the museum parking lot. Like all outdoor sculpture from time to time, this piece needs refurbishing.
Harry Messersmith has been contracted to do so with an estimate of $2000-2500. As is often the case, there is no budget to support this task, so if anyone has any helpful ideas about funding this project, please email us at [email protected].

Public Art at City Hall - have you seen it?
“Rivertown Brick Mural” by Harry Messersmith, John Wilton and John Wolfe, in the breezeway, 123 South Florida Avenue
These three DeLand artists were selected by a citizen committee tasked with installing public art in the new city hall building. For this commission, the committee asked that the three artists collaborate on the project. Each artist was well established and successful, so deciding to collaborate was not an easy decision. They spent the following three months deciding if they could successfully work together or not. They finally said yes and the brick mural was installed in December of 2006.

Did you know?
DeLand has a Mural Ordinance.
Yep, murals are considered part of the City's Public Art Program, so murals must first be approved before being applied to any buildings (including residential) within the city limits. If you hear of anyone considering a mural, have them contact Kieu Moses at City Hall.
If you find yourself in City Hall in the next few months, make sure to check out the artwork in the first floor lobby.
And if you see some beaming parents while you’re there, it’s because the artwork was submitted from children of city employees. The theme for the display is “Summer in DeLand.” This artwork, part of the city’s Art in Public Places Program, will be on display through September 14.
The "Road Sign Triptych" on south Woodland at the intersection of Georgia Avenue has been removed while DOT does some upgrades in the area. The signs will be returned once the DOT work has been completed.
