Peaceful 2023 Mamas (& birthworkers).
đ¤˛đžI am uplifting all women in prayer for a healthy maternal journey (no matter what season you are in).
Preparing to conceive: Iâm praying life into your wombs, so that you manifest your baby and all of your deep desires.
Expecting: Iâm praying for you, your baby, and womb for a healthy pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Iâm praying that youâre surrounded by the right people to help you birth your baby and (re)birth self.
Postpartum: Iâm praying that you receive everything you need (even what you donât know what to ask for).
Mastrescence: Iâm praying that you release what no longer serves you, that youâre able to be in present time, and appreciate the grieving that comes with your child growing. Iâm praying that you embrace how you and your child(ren) are evolving.
Doulas: I pray for your mind, body, and spirit to be in alignment to serve in the best way possible. I pray we heal our wounds, our words uplift, and that we allow ourselves to be fully guided.

December is the end of a year and an end for a lot of things in your life. Cherish the time you have to reflect before we enter 2023. What will you do in a new year? Time to think about that is now, not when January starts.

This is what empowerment looks like for breastfeeding. Mothers should be able to come together (if they choose) and breastfeed their children. It allows them to get more comfortable and confident when they're sharing the experience.â

Yes, FED is best! meaning, whatever method you have to use to nourish your baby, is great! But for now, can we take this moment to pat the women on the back who did choose the breastfeeding journey? Too often, black women arenât properly educated or supported on that journey and press on anyway. That is the beauty of this life that God has given us. For a baby to come directly out of the womb and know that his (or her) source of food is right there, with mom. Breastfeeding is BEYOND difficult (especially those first few weeks) but you kind of just figure it out, together!

Do not throw away your frozen breastmilk.
If there's a power outage and you can't save your frozen breastmilk, you can repurpose it.
If you have a cooler, store the frozen packs with ice/ice packs, until you can't. Call someone to see if there's anyone near you who can store it in their freezer until your power is back on.
Remember there are many nutrients in breastmilk. You can make homemade products (ex. milk bath, lotion, soap) filled with antibodies and antioxidants that come from your body. If you don't want to make a body product, you can use the milk on your plants as a fertilizer.
Refreezing is not recommended.
"We can say, 'Breastfeed or donât breastfeed. You do you,' to our friends who need to hear it. But Iâve begun to wonder if even those friends needed more from me. If the investment is truly in supporting womenâs decision-making and making the entire process of motherhood less frantic and depleting and more dignified, we have to do a lot more.
I know the âbreast is best statistics are used to guilt some women into misery, to put their babyâs small chance of improved health outcomes above their own sanity, and sometimes their own health. But this is just one side of the coin. The reason to advocate for making breastfeeding and pumping easier isnât to pressure more women into doing it: Itâs about pressuring our culture, from medicine to engineering to the workplace, to adapting to the needs of the women who for whatever reasonâto save on formula costs, to bond with their babies, to give their babies even a fraction of a better chance at good healthâwant to breastfeed, but canât.

The fewer the ingredient list, the better. Breastfeeding mothers may want to keep the breast and armpit area clear of product to protect their child from being exposed to chemicals and toxins. See previous post to learn a little more about hazardous chemicals.
It may not be easy to transition, but it's worth it. Spend time learning what natural plant based deordorant works best for you (maybe you like roll-on's or sprays with essential oils or non-scented). Start with detoxing your pits! Be patient as it may take up to 30-days to adjust. Try products.

As a Doula (and Childbirth Educator Trainee), it is important to me that families are aware of exposure to environmental hazards.
Hazardous chemicals have been found in cord blood, placenta, meconium, and breastmilk samples. These chemicals include commonly known hazards such as lead, mercury, and environmental to***co smoke, as well as some pesticides, solvents, products containing chlorine, and other chemicals.
The fetus is particularly vulnerable to environmental chemicals that can disrupt the developmental process at critical times during gestation and early infant care. The womb is the first environment. So if moms have toxins entering their bodies, toxins are also being transferred to the baby.
Mothers this is one way you protect you and your child by educating yourself and taking action. It is important to know that exposure to hazards and toxins can cause miscarriage, illnesses, and possibly be the cause of allergies.

When are you going to allow yourself to experience what youâre feeling?
Listen to episode one of our new podcast: https://anchor.fm/chosenjourni/episodes/1--Soak-in-Spilled-Milk-ehhtf0/a-a2rfpcj
We oftentimes hear people saying, âDont cry over spilled milk.â But what if you trying to hide what youâre feeling and your quickness to clean the so-called âmessâ is the reason why youâre having a hard time with enjoying your life?
Listen to episode 1 of the podcast titled, "Soak in Spilled Milk. https://anchor.fm/chosenjourni/episodes/1--Soak-in-Spilled-Milk-ehhtf0/a-a2rfpcj
Uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact with your newborn within the first hour is referred to as the golden hour. This can help lower your anxiety and allow the baby to feel relaxed, safe, and instantly feel loved. This time is important regardless, if you choose to breastfeed. Just in case you didn't catch thatâThis moment is not just for breastfeeding parents.
Uninterrupted means the doctors, midwives, nurses (all healthcare providers) should allow the family to experience this moment together. There is no need to rush to ""clean"", weigh, check vitals, etc. Allow the family to have at least an hour together with the lights low or however they choose. Parents you can make this request.
At some point, the baby will naturally begin to crawl to your breast for their first feeding.
It is also great to allow the baby to experience skin-to-skin contact with the parent, birthing partner, caretaker, so they can be (re)acquainted with hearing their heartbeat and feel the rhythm of their breathing. The baby will recognize their voice, if they were connecting while in the womb.
Remember, skin-to-skin is not just for birth. Skin-to-skin shall continue for many reasons (bonding, brain development, emotional intelligence, love, stronger immune system, and much more) throughout the first year.

Know Your Rights and ask questions to be informed.
We have a âFAQ for expecting parents during COVID-19 (coronavirus)" on our website. Feel free to do your own research to stay informed. Look into what the CDC and WHO are posting, in addition to your care providers. Policies are changing quick, so be sure to call often or ask your support team to help you stay updated (your partner, doula or other birth companions). However, do not solely depend on what your doctor tells you. Ask for their policies. Ultimately, know that you are the mother and can make the final decision for how you want to feed your baby.

Know Your Rights and ask questions to be informed. Research your states breastfeeding laws. Let us know what you find and tell us what you think.
When researching, you want to know about breastfeeding in the hospital, in public, at work, potentially when attending jury duty (and maybe much more).
There is no national law about breastfeeding in public. It's up to your state to decide. Source: https://wicbreastfeeding.fns.usda.gov/your-breastfeeding-rights
Example: In the state of Georgia, breastfeeding of a baby is an important and basic act of nurture which should be encouraged in the interests of maternal and child health and allows a mother to breastfeed her baby in any location where the mother and baby are otherwise authorized to be. Source: NCSL (National Conference of State Legislatures)
Even with this example, if you are at a particular place, they may not comply with the act of nurturing. It should be up to you to decide if you want to breastfeed (in public or not), but unfortunately you can be asked to stop nursing depending on where youâre at. But you should not be asked to leave. Please research.

Devote time and energy (emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually) to you and your baby + take time to learn about the science of breastfeeding. When you learn the science of breastfeeding, it may become easier to see the benefits.
Breastfeeding provides long-term preventative effects for the mother, including an earlier return to pre-pregnancy weight (of your uterus and body mass) and a reduced risk of cancer. But please do not rush to snapback. This takes time and should not be the focus.
According to NCSL, National Conference of State Legislatures: Breast milk contain antibodies that protect infants from bacteria and viruses. Breastfed children have fewer ear, respiratory, and urinary tract infections and have diarrhea less often. Infants who are exclusively breastfed tend to need fewer health care visits, prescriptions and hospitalizations resulting in a lower total medical care cost compared to never-breastfed infants.

Together we are making it through this global pandemic and it is truly a blessing to see another month. We have 31 days to make progress towards or accomplishment what we will. What is on your list?
This month, we are focusing on breastfeeding to serve mothers and expecting mothers who are learning. We will inform, affirm, provide resources, and even share personal stories. Let us know if you have a question at any point or if there is something you want us to speak to or even share more of. Tag a mother who needs this info.
There will be other posts regarding other topics, but breastfeeding is our main focus.
Since it's National Breastfeeding Month, we wanted to lead with nurturing energy. Let's be thankful and show appreciation to those who have and are nurturing us. Breastfeeding is nurturing for the baby, so we wanted to tap into that space by making it universal. Who has nurtured or is nurturing you?
