What to do Before ,During and After earthquake

Earthquakes are unpredictable and destructive natural phenomena that can strike anywhere and anytime. They can cause injuries, deaths, and damages to buildings, roads, and utilities. Therefore, it is important to be prepared for an earthquake and know what to do to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Before an earthquake, you should understand your risk and take measures to secure your space. Find out if you live in an area prone to earthquakes and follow structural design and engineering practices when constructing or renovating your house or building1. Identify and secure items that might fall or break during shaking, such as televisions, shelves, mirrors, appliances, and furniture2. Assemble an emergency kit that includes food, water, medicine, flashlight, radio, and other essential supplies for at least 72 hours2. Make a family emergency plan and practice how to communicate and reunite with your family members in case of a disasters.

During an earthquake, you should drop, cover, and hold on to protect yourself from falling debris. If you are indoors, stay inside and do not run outside or to other rooms. Drop to the ground and take cover under a sturdy table or desk. Hold on to it until the shaking stops. If there is no shelter nearby, crawl to an interior wall and cover your head and neck with your arms4. If you are outdoors, stay away from buildings, trees, power lines, and other objects that could fall. Move to an open area and drop to the ground. If you are in a car, pull over and stop. Set your parking brake and stay inside the car until the shaking stops.

After an earthquake, you should check yourself and others for injuries and provide first aid if needed. Be prepared for aftershocks, which are smaller earthquakes that follow the main shock. Stay away from damaged buildings, roads, and bridges. Listen to the radio or use your phone to get updated information and instructions from authorities. If you are trapped under debris, do not move or kick up dust. Cover your mouth with a cloth and make noise to alert rescuers.

Earthquakes are inevitable, but we can reduce their impact by being prepared and knowing what to do. By following these tips, you can stay safe and resilient in the face of a quake.
