An Arts-Based Curriculum
The arts are one of humankind's most essential forms of communication. Traditionally, arts have been secondary to academic curriculum; our school creates a course of study that centers around the performing arts. Our academic core courses [English, History, Mathematics and the Sciences] are driven by the performing arts. We believe that the arts:
• ENHANCE students' self-concepts, communication skills and performance in academic disciplines
• IMPROVE attitudes towards and perceptions of other cultures
• Benefits of Arts-Based Instruction
• Artistic Perception – Students learn the essential vocabulary of technical theatre, developing the baseline knowledge and skills necessary to communicate effectively in this art form.
Creative Expression – Students produce artwork, either by original creation or by performing the works of others.
Historical and Cultural Context – Students learn to understand the arts in the context of the time and place of their creation. They develop a broad understanding of artists and performers, their works, the effects that their society and times had on them, and consider the effects of their artwork on society in the past and present.
Aesthetic Valuing – Students are exposed to the sensory, intellectual, emotional and philosophic basis for understanding the arts and for making judgments about form, content, technique, and purpose. Students formulate personal aesthetic guidelines, which are then applicable to a lifelong, fulfilling experience of the arts.
Connections – Students communicate competency in all aspects of the arts (creation, performance, production, analysis, appreciation, history, culture, technology,) within and across all curricular areas.

• The Interdisciplinary Approach
•
Coordinated Thematic Units
Thematic units (a course of study revolving around one topic) engage students in learning, capture their interest, and involve them in discussions meant to stir controversy, debate, and critical thinking. Topics are structured to be intellectually and emotionally relevant to students so that they can meaningfully apply ideas learned from their discussions to their daily lives.
The interdisciplinary approach to teaching envisions traditional subject classes as a unified and organic whole, rather than as divided individual pursuits. Teachers in an interdisciplinary setting work cooperatively to design, integrate and administer curricula that is thematically linked. This emphasis on thematic units -- when combined with team teaching, unified classes, and interdisciplinary projects -- encourages students to incorporate knowledge from each of their classes. In this way, students will rely on their various intelligences to solve problems and will then be able to recognize and build connections between their studies and their lives.
Action-Based Projects
The basic premise of the action-based approach to curriculum integration is that successful, productive adults carry out a purposeful problem solving process at work and in other areas of their lives. By completing appropriately scaled down versions of adult action-based projects, students develop the capacity for success in their personal work life and demonstrate their degree of preparedness for work or for the next level of education.
Home for Alicorns and Rainbows.
We are about the start another year. 2023-2024 is looking to be a bright rainbow year.
Due to the fact Phoenix's neo development testing had to be scheduled for August 31, 2022, we will be starting school the day after Labor day.
Sorry I haven't updated. Life happened.
High school also started.
And Turtles turned into Mermaids. Navy and Teal colors show our school spirit. For the coming year forward to graduation Math, Science, and Social Studies will be provided through ck-12.org from EPISD community.
Change is always good. New Mascot the Turtle and school colors Teal and Navy.
It's 2020 folks...
Two weeks before Thanksgiving Pixie was working of an English assignment. She seem very confused. She couldn't remember what vowels and consonants were. I also learned she can read anything because of her early phonics studies. The snag is she has know idea what she is reading. Comprehension is zero. She has no clue what the words mean.
We took a break for Thanksgiving and to be honest with only 3 weeks left for until Christmas, my health being under strain from my seasonal allergies and because it's 2020 pandemic stage 3 Pixie just wasn't focussing.
The New Year brings another shift we are working more on vocabulary and reading comprehension.
I am constantly reading and researching on Pumphead. There are more studies on the single ventricle and the Fontan. I also learned that many of the issues could have started during development. It all has to do with the way the oxygen is exchanged. It makes sense. The question is will the cognitive issues continue to be disrupted or will they go away. I have an idea how the issues take place. When they occur we have to stop and retrain the brain. That is what 2021 will bring...Retrain, Refocus and Retain.
Have a Blessed and Merry Christmas and Outstanding New Year. See you in 2021.
Due to COVID-19, self isolation, Shelter in Place orders and all the stress and emotions these events have caused Lake Vista Academy is taking the Summer off. We will see you the Day after Labor Day September 8, 2020 for the official fist day of school. Stay safe and enjoy your summer.
Testing one two three
As you might have noticed or not we have rebranded back to our original name. Lake View Academy was founded in September 2009.
This year has been full of many ciriculum tries and changes. For Pixie's learning style online and ebooks just don't work. So we are going to an all workbook/book format. Other changes as we could go to an accredited ciriculum in the future. That also another reason behind the rebranding. Our orginal school colors were gray and burgundy. They could be mixed purple, orange and black.
The new school year 2019-2020 is fast approaching. I wanted to start mid July but one of the new ck12 Flexbooks 2.0 wasn't ready. So I set the start date to match the local school district. August 15th is the official date. The new Flexbook is up and running and waiting for Pixie to start 7th grade Math. She is finally on grade level for everything. So proud of how hard she has worked to catch up.
CK12CEP is complete. Waiting for all the eyes to be crossed and all the tees dotted.
Getting ready to start CK-12 Educator re-Certification on July 5th. I hope to start MCA classes July 23rd while everything I learned is still fresh. The MCA orange tabbies are junior high bound. Seventh grade is going to be awesome this year.
I want to say congratulations to the class of 2025. The girls will be starting 7th grade.
