A Croatian Anniversary in Tacoma The Slavonian American Benevolent Society (SABS) celebrates 120 (plus!) years of Croatian culture in Tacoma Washington.
On Sunday, October 4th starting at 12:00 Pacific Daylight Time, Vela Luka Croatian Dance Ensemble and Bonaca Tamburiza Orchestra will perform a suite of songs and dances from the Baranja region of Croatia. The group performed this suite at the 2018 DANCE This, at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle in July of 2018. DANCE This is produced by Seattle Theatre Group. Videography by Melodic Caring Project.
The Croatian part of Baranja is the region between the rivers Drava and Danube and Hungarian borders. “Jelica Vezuje”, opens the suite, an a ca****la song expressing the work in the vineyard and the turmoil of love, followed later in the suite by the festive song “Baranjsko Vino”, which brings the dancers and orchestra together in celebration of the “Wine of Baranja”. Vela Luka performs Ranče, Jabučice, Kolo Na Dvije Strane, dances of the Croatians in Baranja, and Kopogaš, a dance native to the Croatians of the Baranja region in Hungary. The quick footwork and stomping are trademarks of the neighboring Hungarian dance style.
