Can you name these former and current Hermantown High golf legends who played a friendly round recently at Enger Park Golf Course, from left to right?
Hermantown senior-to-be defenseman Drew Sams has stepped up as a respected team leader this off-season.
“I think we have a really skilled, good, fun team -- a group of guys who will continue to play hard for each other,” said Sams, who was slotted with junior Joey Pierce in a top-two defensive pairing in the Lakeview Summer Classic at Mars Lakeview Arena last weekend.
"We’re a fast team that plays hockey the right way. I'm really excited for us this season.”
The 2019-20 Hawks will be led by Mr. Hockey in Minnesota preseason favorite Blake Biondi, a senior forward and Bulldogs recruit, and Sams and Pierce.
Other Hawks players to watch are junior forward Aaron Pionk, an elite sniper, and senior power forward Jack Mathison, who has been spotted bench-pressing a 1973 Volkswagon Beetle all summer.
Does Sams believe the Hawks feel any added pressure to get back to the Class 1A state tournament after losing to Greenway in the Section 7A final a year ago?
“To a man, I think the guys enjoy the heat,” said Sams. “It’s always fun to be looked at as the team to beat. We’re right there knocking at the door every season and nothing will be different this year. St. Cloud Cathedral has a really good team again this year, and they should be right there with us atop Class 1A.”

Blake Biondi also had two goals for the top-ranked Hawks in the game.

The Hawks were impressive in the Lakeview Summer Classic high school boys hockey tournament this weekend at Mars Lakeview Arena in Duluth, winning two of three games despite playing without standout senior forward Blake Biondi who is preparing to compete in an elite world junior tournament overseas which begins this week.
Defending Section 7A runner-up Hermantown showcased a strong defensive corp, led by elite junior Joey Pierce who has moved back after skating right wing on the top forward line a year ago. Seniors Drew Sams, Zach Carson and Indio Dowd stood out. Jackson Lucia, Jack Glockle and Brady Rothe will compete for top-six spots.
Up front, Virginia High transfer Zach Kilen and burly Jack Mathison were impressive, along with junior super-sniper Aaron Pionk. Ethan Lund and Aydyn Dowd are also elite forwards to watch.
Senior Jacob Backstrom is the team's No. 1 goaltender.
"We have such a great culture here in Hermantown with our four outdoor rinks, kids skating every day from after school to 10 p.m.," said Mathison. "Having the big crowds cheering us on, from the kids to our grandparents, it's great."

POST-GAME QUOTES
The mighty Hawks on Tuesday's 11-4, come-from-behind Section 7AAA baseball victory over Cloquet at turfed Egerdahl Field in Proctor:
Coach Mike Z: "That first inning was rough. Cloquet had some check swings that fell in for hits, and you could feel the momentum wasn't going the right way. But we didn't panic. We scored one in the bottom half of the inning and then, you know, just had that nice big inning there. So, hats off to Nolan (Ruprecht) for keeping it where it was, and the guys picked up Darian (Gotz) on the mound. It was a whole team effort. (Thomas) Borash has been stroking the ball really well all spring. I mean, he's really supporting that bottom half of the lineup, giving us a little pop in the seven, eight, and nine spots. We've been hitting the ball pretty well all year. The big thing is, at times we haven't fielded it, but I thought we fielded it pretty well today. (Aaron) Pionk had a couple of nice plays at third base, including the between-hop that we turned two, which was a huge deal. So, as long as we continue to pick the baseball, I think we'll be okay. We’ll need a lot of arms, and guys who can come back after a couple days rest. We’ve got Jeb (Paczynski), Pionk and Gotz, who didn’t throw may pitches in that first inning. In terms of the section, it’s wide open with no one dominant team. Grand Rapids is the No. 1 team for a reason, because they execute well."
Second-sacker Elliott Peterson: “Felt good to get it rolling in the playoffs here, and now we’ll see who we get next, Grand Rapids or Hibbing. We got off to a slow start today. Couple bleeders there for Cloquet in the first, but our guys came back strong, battling and getting some timely hits. We picked each other up, and Ruprecht was clutch on the hill. Borash had a couple stand-up doubles and three hits, bringing it here in the playoffs. We burned up Ruprecht today, but we’ve got guys who can throw on Thursday and Saturday. Pitching depth is the same for every team at this time of the season. We need to step up at the plate."
Paul Bunyan-strong Thomas Borash: “Nice getting a couple of doubles. It’s always fun to put a good stroke on the ball. I’m seeing the ball well. Also nice to get three (hits) there, whatever helps the team. We came together after that first inning, played good defense, got some timely hits and benefitted by good relief pitching. If we keep playing like this, we’ll be fine.”
