Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Faculty of Health Sciences organized an oath ceremony for the graduates of the 2017-2018 Academic Year Fall Semester. During the ceremony that took place at the Health Sciences Faculty Amphitheatre at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, the 30th of January 2018, a total of 128 undergraduate and associate level graduates recited their medical oaths.

At the ceremony that commenced with a moment of silence and the national anthem, the opening address was delivered by EMU Health Sciences Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Mehtap Malkoç. Prof. Dr. Malkoç stated that today is a proud and important day as their young colleagues are taking the first steps towards their prospective careers. Prof. Dr. Malkoç thanked the Health Sciences Faculty academic and administrative staff for the important roles they played on the road to the students’ graduation. Addressing the graduates Prof. Dr. Malkoç requested that they act ethically and keep up to date with new developments in order to help their country and stay bound to Ataturk’s principles and reforms. Prof. Dr. Malkoç concluded her speech by extending her best wishes to the new graduates in their prospective careers.

Upon completion of the opening speech, EMU Health Sciences Faculty, Departments of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, Nutrition and Dietetics, Nursing, Health Management and Sports Sciences undergraduate students recited their oaths as well as students from the associate programs, Oral and Dental Health, Anaesthesia, Surgery Services, Dialysis, Physiotherapy, First and Emergency Aid, Radiotherapy and Medical Imaging Techniques. The oaths specific to each department, were recited together with department chairs or program coordinators.

All health personnel take oath before starting their careers in the field. The oath shows devotion to the principles and ethical values they will abide by throughout their careers. Oaths that are generally accepted as tradition in the field of health can show slight variations between different universities and departments.

EMU Among the World's Best Young Universities!
UK-based Times Higher Education (THE), one of the most reputable publishers of the worldwide university rankings, announced “The World’s Best Young Universities Rankings 2017” (also known as ‘Under 50 Rankings’), featuring the list of the world’s best universities under the age of 50.

In the rankings, Eastern Mediterranean University has achieved remarkable success after having been ranked within the 151-200 band. It is worth mentioning that Eastern Mediterranean University is the only university from the TRNC appearing on the list.

The Times Higher Education ‘Under 50 Rankings’ applies the same performance indicators as the THE World University Rankings to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons, which are trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments. The performance indicators are grouped into five areas, namely, teaching quality, scientific research, citations, international outlook and income from the industry. Featuring 200 institutions, the World’s Best Young Universities Rankings have been announced on the official webpage of the Times Higher Education on 5 April 2017.

Eastern Mediterranean was formerly ranked within the top 600-800 universities in the Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings which only includes the most prestigious 980 universities among more 25000 universities in the world. In “BRICS and Emerging Economies University Rankings”, Eastern Mediterranean University once again confirmed its quality after having been ranked the 173rd. With this remarkable achievement, Eastern Mediterranean University appeared within the top 7 universities within 200 universities in Turkey.

Three Universities from Turkey Appeared on Last Year’s List

Only three universities in Turkey managed to appear on THE’s The World’s Best Young Universities Rankings 2016. In the former list of the World’s Best Young Universities, Sabancı University ranked 13th, Bilkent University 28th and Koç University 51st.

With EMU’s Appearance on the BRICS Rankings, North Cyprus Listed within Countries

With EMU’s appearance on THE’s “BRICS and Emerging Economies University Rankings” as the 173rd university, Northern Cyprus’ name was listed amongst countries appearing on the list for the first time. After appearing on the list of Turkish universities in former rankings, EMU appeared on the list as an institution in Northern Cyprus for the first time, confirming the fact that education overcomes embargoes. On the other hand, EMU’s success in “BRICS and Emerging Economies University Rankings” and the appearance of Northern Cyprus on the list as a country were protested in South Cyprus.

Faculty of Pharmacy is proud of being the first academic member accepted by FIP (International Pharmacy Federation) from Cyprus Island and the second one among the Faculties of Pharmacy throughout Turkey and North Cyprus.

The Faculty has student laboratories equipped with the latest technological and educational infrastructure necessary for pharmaceutical sciences including HPLC, GC-MS, FT-IR, UV spectrophotometer, laminar flow, microwave reactor, tablet machine, dissolution device, granulator, homogenizator, viscosimeter, climate cabinet, incubators, particle sizer, powder mixer, grinder, water baths, microscopes, etc. All of the laboratories are furnished with smart board. The medicinal and aromatic plant garden is arranged in front of the Faculty building for the studies in Pharmaceutical Botany and Pharmacognosy.

The fundamental mission of Dr. Fazıl Küçük Medicine Faculty for its graduates is to demonstrate the highest level of medical knowledge and skills in line with the most advanced international standards, to have a good understanding of global health issues, to strive to improve the life quality of individuals and the population to the highest possible level through delivery of exemplary health care provision, to be up to date with global developments in health and able to adopt the most up to date technology in their everyday medical practice and to demonstrate outstanding skills as highly qualified doctors, not just through clinical skills but also through outstanding knowledge and skills in professionalism, ethics , medical leadership, effective communication and teamwork.

Our vision is to adopt the approach for the most up to date educational standards and continuous learning in delivering medical education at the highest standards which will always be based on the principles of evidence based medicine, research and a student centered approach. We see our future as a strong faculty with a robust identity and culture, delivering high standards in medicine, gaining acknowledgement locally and internationally for our high standards and attracting students and teaching staff of highest abilities.

The Higher Technological Institute (which was established in 1979) has been transformed into the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU, in 1986) with extensive support from Middle East Technical University in Turkey. In the Engineering Faculty the founding departments were Electrical-Electronic Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering with a total of 105 students. Now the faculty has 12 programs in 5 departments and 2800 students from 35 different countries.

Currently, our mission in the EMU Engineering Faculty is to contribute to betterment of our society through the pursuit of innovative education, active learning and cutting edge scientific research in a competitive and sustainable environment and maintain our regional leadership by setting a good example. We also aim to provide opportunities and create an esteemed academic environment for the exchange of diversity of cultures, social, political and ideological knowledge and professional talents among the students as well as the faculty.

Our Vision is to move the Engineering Faculty of the Eastern Mediterranean University further ahead as the leading Engineering Faculty and make our graduates the professionals that are highly demanded in the industry for their well-known professional skills, scientific background, international culture and moral values.

Faculty of Education was established in 1999. The fundamental mission of the faculty is to adopt and administer a functional view of education reconciling society’s educational expectations with the requirements of contemporary education, to develop, apply and improve the principles and processes of learning and teaching in line with the educational philosophy of teaching how to learn, conduct original high quality research in education, and to present the results at respective national and international institutions, contribute to the policy and future decisions in education through research projects. In line with this mission our vision is to become an institution preferred foremost by the most selected educational institutions and research establishments of the future in the country and region, become an institution of education and research aware of the influence between education and the changes and developments in the world, become a leading institution of education providing counseling and educational services to families, teachers and administrators.

The Faculty of Communication and Media Studies continues in the long tradition of graduating qualified students since the 1997-1998 academic year. Prior to its establishment as a Faculty in 1997 (with the three departments of Journalism, Public Relations and Advertising and Radio, TV and Film), the infrastructure was laid by the Department of Communication and Media Studies whish was established in 1994 under the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The fourth department of Visual Art and Visual Communication Design began enrolling students in the 2005-2006 academic year. Until the 2010-11 academic year, the language of instruction in the faculty was English. In 2011-2012, the Departments of Journalism and Radio, TV and Film added a program with Turkish as the language of instruction, followed in the 2012-2013 academic year bythe Department of Public Relations and Advertising. The English lanugage Journalism program froze student enrolment at the beginning of the 2012-2013 acedemic year.The undergraduate programs had 2293 graduates through 2013.Currently in 2013-2014 the combined total of student enrollment from seven academic programs (four English and three Turkish Language programs) is 540.

The Eastern Mediterranean University Foreign Languages and English Preparatory School (FLEPS) has been providing quality language services to the university students and community since the establishment of EMU. We teach a full range of English language courses to preparatory, undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as offering community programmes. We also offer all our students the opportunity to learn second foreign languages. Our School is an examination centre for a number of top international exams, including IELTS (International English Language Testing System), TOEFL IBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-based Test), TELC (The European Language Certificates), LCCI (London Chamber of Commerce and Industry) and TOLES (The Test of Legal English Skills).

In the current era of increasing international competition and fast-changing technological developments, the mission of Eastern Mediterranean University School of Tourism and Hospitality Management is to train highly qualified advanced and intermediate workforce providing social and economical contributions to the tourism sector both in Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Following its establishment in 1990, School of Tourism and Hospitality Management offered only an A.A.S. degree. In 1992, it started offering a BS degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management and in 2002, the School started offering undergraduate education in Recreational Management. Being aware of the importance of IT and foreign language education, the School pays special attention in equipping students with foreign language and computer skills.

Courses offered by our school are based on the Private Law, Public Law and about professional skills such as typing. Tutors who teach these courses are usually from Law Faculty.

EMU School of Health Services took a step to academic life in 2012-2013 Academic year by accepting students to the Associate degree of First and Emergency Aid and Anesthesia departments. Both departments offer Turkish based education and the School of Health Services has been accepting a great number of students.

In 2013-14 Academic year, Associate degree of Dialysis, Physiotherapy Technician, Elder Care, Oral and Dental Health and Medical Imaging were established under the name of the School of Health Services. In all departments students are educated with theoretical courses related to the areas and they improve their professional skills with the help of established laboratories such as Dialysis Laboratory, Oral and Dental Health Application Laboratory, Basic Skills Laboratory, Anatomy Laboratory, the Centre of Healthy Life and the Centre of Prosthesis Orthesis and Biomechanics. Visual materials are used in the theoretical lessons to increase the quality of education. Also, all the resources and opportunities are provided for students to complete their professional traineeship. In addition to the theoretical and practical courses, students would have chance to attend professional conferences, social and cultural activities. The School of Health Services has cooperation protocols with various universities in Turkey to keep the education quality above the standards. At the first stage, the cooperation protocols were signed with Marmara University, Gazi University and Dokuz Eylül University. Then, Hacettepe University and Ankara University have been added to our cooperation protocols. By this means, our students have chance to take advantage of the facilities that are provided by the universities and academic personnel of those universities get opportunity of teaching in our university.

The School of Computing and Technology (SCT), established in 1979, is the oldest unit of the Eastern Mediterranean University . SCT provides a high-tech education in a fully digital and multicultural environment to its multinational student profile. The teaching language is English in the four year Information Technology Program (BS) and in the graduate program Master of Technology in Information Technology (MTech in IT). However, Turkish language is used as a teaching language in the two-year and three-year course programs. With its excellent facilities coupled with a commitment to excellence in teaching and ''Project-based learning'', the SCT offers a course of study leading to:

An International Student Advisor (ISA) within SCT is available full-time to assist our international students with both academic and non-academic concerns. Also a Student-to-Student Advisory service (S2S) is provided by the Student Assistants in order to help with students' study problems.

The Faculty of Business and Economics (FBE), began enrolling students in the two undergraduate programs of Business Administration and Economics in 1986. Our student numbers have since grown from 40 to more than 2,500 with 16 Undergraduate, 6 Masters and 4 Doctoral programs offered directly by our Faculty or by the School of Business and Finance division of our Faculty. Students are approximately 10% local, 45% from the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, and the Balkans and another 45% from Turkey. We employ over 40 full-time and 30 part-time faculty and 35 research assistants.

Department of Architecture has taken 6 years of accreditation (with a visit in the 3rd year) from the Architecture Accreditation Council of Turkey (MIAK). Faculty is a member of ENHR (European Network for Housing Research), EAAE (European Association for Architectural Education) and IFI (International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers). The Faculty's mission is to develop a distinguished curriculum in accordance with international standards, to provide opportunities for an interdisciplinary design education to its diverse student community, to encourage and educate the future architects and designers as innovative, creative, culture sensitive and environment responsive professionals with high critical thinking abilities and with up-to-date knowledge of technologies used in architecture, and interior architecture; who can share and apply their knowledge within and with other disciplines, and who are open to new possibilities and collaborations with other disciplines in processes of both learning and professional practice. The vision of the Faculty is providing leadership in design education with internationally accredited programs both at national and international levels through its distinguished academic infrastructure and supportive milieu for students to orient themselves and acquire knowledge and skills needed towards a creative and fruitful career. Improving the quality, increasing the motivation, cooperation and diversity besides developing ethical values are amongst the goals of the Faculty.
