The Corona Virus is serious and people are reacting in many different ways right now, so here are some helpful tips and things you may or may not know to help get you through this chaotic time. A lot of my friends have been posting that they canât find food in any of the stores in LA...itâs getting crazier, so if anyone wants to add to this thread, maybe we can help some people through this crazy time. I would love to hear how you guys are preparing and handling this!
*Out of toilet paper? Gas stations carry toilet paper too! Check your nearest gas stations. International food stores and smaller local markets too should have some. Bonus- you are also supporting your local businesses! Also, check out eBay- prices might be nuts, but hereâs another option.
*One thing I learned from my brother who hikes all over the world is peanut butter has an abundance of calories. SO- if youâre freaking out, canât find food and want to buy some cheap foods packed with calories, Iâd suggest peanut butter if you can find it. Thereâs almost 200 calories in one scoop of it with 35 servings in one 40oz container. This is cheap survival food if you ever need it.
*Another fun fact is that you can freeze just about anything, which includes bread. So if youâre accumulating groceries- freeze them! Make sure to write a date on what you pack to know the life expectancies of yours items. Cut your surplus of fruits and veggies, place them in a ziplock and then you donât have to worry about eating them before they expire. You can even freeze milk! Just make sure you leave room in the container for it to expand in the freezer or it wonât be pretty. Easy peasy.
*Youtube how to pickle your veggies and fruit. Jarred goods can be stored for a few months. No need to stress at the store. You can do this yourself! You can also make soups, meats, etc and can them.
*If youâre a person who normally eats out- Look at Pinterest for recipes that you can make with the items your already have. Youâll be surprised how many meals you can make with the bare minimum! Watch Cooking shows for inspo! Netflix has a ton of them. Buy flour and make your own bread. Bread is easy to make! Why not! Make it, freeze it. You got it!
*You would rather not make food right now- life is stressful enough! Restaurants are doing curb side delivery like the Bellwether in Studio City, CA. Call ahead to order, theyâll give you a time to pull up to an open spot, an employee will run your food out to your car, take care of payment and youâre good to go! Easy and with social distancing! Bonus- you support your favorite local businesses and keep them in business! Score!
*You can also make your own hand sanitizer 3/4 cup of 99% rubbing alcohol and 1/4 aloe Vera. If you rather carry rubbing alcohol, you can buy a little plastic sprayer from CVS and boom, you can spray handles on doors and gas nozzles before you fill up, which also helps other people around you.
*If you need disposable baby wipes- you can make your own! Get a container large enough to fit a half of a roll of paper towels that has a lid on it, cut the roll of paper rolls in half. In a medium-sized bowl mix the water, the Castile soap, Witch Hazel extract, and the olive oil. The reason that we boil and cool the water is to ensure that itâs sterile. When the mixture is combined well, pour it over the paper towels, close the container, and then shake, rattle, and roll it around until the liquid is fully absorbed. Wait a half-hour or so, and then open the container, remove the inner cardboard tube, and pull your first wipe from the inside of the roll.
*You can also make baby wipes by bottling the mixture in a clean hair shampoo bottle and can sq**rt the liquid onto a wash cloth that you can wash in your laundry center.
*Income stopped coming in?
- I know surveys can pay some money- I donât know how much, but taking surveys is an idea.
- Youâre not scared of this virus and you are not going to quarantine yourself, well thereâs a job for you- DELIVERY SERVICES! Offer delivery services. Join Instacart, Postmates, any business that delivers. Maybe youâre the girl/guy we pay to find toilet paper! We need you and thank you for your services in advance.
- Offer your services via Skype or Gmail chat. I.e- If youâre a makeup artist, maybe engage with your followers and see if theyâd pay for a custom tailored class to THEM! Hey, itâs a once in a lifetime chance to learn from their favorite makeup artist of all time!
-Time for Spring cleaning! Sell your old clothing and unneeded items. You can use Poshmark, eBay, etc. and just ship your items. Social distancing accomplished.
- Set up an Amazon store. Maybe list toilet paper as one of your items! Make a few bucks!
- Etsy - This is your time to use all of your arts and craft items youâve been hoarding over the past few years! Make some art. Sell it. People are on their phones more than ever- someoneâs gotta bite!
I hope this helps! Be kind to others and stay safe out there!

The Body Shop and We Stop Hate.org asked me to be a part of a campaign called, "Colour Beautiful". It's a project that inspires bullied teens to put their best foot forward and raise their confidence. Why? Because teens that are happy with themselves won't put others down. ****I responded to an email today and I thought that I should share it with you guys. If you are getting bullied and people are not being nice to you, maybe this will help.*****
Hi _______!
Sorry it has taken me a while to respond, but somehow I missed your message in my inbox. I'm SO sorry!!
I was bullied my entire life and I feel your pain. I don't know you, but I can tell you one thing that I live by: "Negativity gets you nowhere." Somehow that quote was able to get me through all the bullying and everything that was going on in my life. I even still use it daily. Another thing I can say is that, in a few years I guarantee that you won't be friends with the people you go to school with and you will all eventually go your separate ways, so why waste the time and energy talking to people who dislike you or hurt you now?
Surround yourself with good, positive people. Even if that means that it's only your mom and your cat. Why hang out with a bunch of acquaintances and put in the energy to make those people like you? Why be someone who you're not? Ya know?
I was a very lonely girl throughout all my years of attending schools. I had a big head, big forehead, a gap between my two front teeth that I could fit two matchsticks side by side in, I was 5'10" (I was the tallest girl in school) and had skinny body that I didn't grow into until I was a junior/senior in high school.
For a few years all I did was try to make people like me by being goofy and loud and trying to fit in with my class. What that did was make me miserable and exhausted. All I wanted was for people to accept me and I was more annoying than funny, because I just wanted someone to talk to and things weren't all that great at home.
Furthermore, I didn't come from a wealthy family, so I didn't wear name brand clothing often. When I was a sophomore in high school, I remember this one time my dad wanted to take me on a trip to Sacramento over the weekend. Prior to the trip, I had worked with him on many construction sites and pulled weeds at home to save up money in hopes that I could buy some popular brand of clothing that all the popular kids wore at my school. That popular brand was Abercrombie and Fitch and I had saved up almost $300.
When we reached Sacramento I asked him if we could go to the mall and if I could buy a brand new outfit. With my $300 at hand, I ran all over the mall looking for the "popular kids" store and when I found it, I was EXTREMELY excited to be there and it was my first time setting foot in that store! Ahhh! I didn't know what to buy, because everything was so expensive, but I knew I needed to buy an entire outfit.
I chose a lacy, tan tank top to go under a brown hoodie that said "Abercrombie & Fitch" on the front in light tan, cursive writing and then found a nice pair of light-washed jeans to go with it. Before you know it, I had burnt through all of my money that I had saved, BUT I had an entire outfit from ABERCROMBIE AND FITCH! WOOHOO!
I was so excited to wear my new outfit to school the next day that I couldn't sleep. I woke up the next morning, put my clothes on, looked in the mirror and couldn't help but hold a huge grin on my face. I LOOKED SO COOL! The minute I stepped onto the bus for school, I was nervous, because I was finally wearing something "cool" and I didn't want the "cool kids" to call me a wannabe. I sat down and Lauren, the coolest girl in school, had complimented my hoodie and I couldn't believe it and throughout the entire day, everyone complimented my outfit! Alas! I was finally accepted!
Everyday, I wore that sweatshirt, because it was the coolest thing I had ever owned and finally people were noticing me! Days went by and people started talking behind my back saying that I didn't wear anything else and it was gross. Believe me, I washed it a lot, so I was always clean, but I realized that it wasn't acceptable at my school to wear one cool thing, because the "popular kids" had many cool outfits that they would switch up from time to time.
Now, I was back to square one. I still wasn't popular and my $300 dollar outfit only lasted a couple days.
From then on, I decided that I would go back to wearing my baggy jeans and my normal attire that consisted of black converse shoes and a black Volcom hoodie and I didn't let anyone judge me. Yeah, I cried almost everyday and I cried a lot. I couldn't get anyone to just give me a chance with my personality OR my cool clothes and I was frustrated. "It's not fair!" --I would always exclaim.
When I thought that I finally made a friend, I found out within the first month of our "friendship" that she was talking behind my back and I would go home in tears. It got to the point that my brother would jokingly say, "You have a new best friend every week." And hearing that every week made me sob even more.
I was lost and lonely. I ended up hanging out with my teachers at lunch and hanging out with younger people and much older people. After a while, I had finally found people that accepted me for who I was and it didn't matter what I looked like or what I wore everyday. After all that, I just knew that I wanted people in my life that was just as positive as I was and I didn't want to change for anyone, but for myself and for the better.
My outlet was standup comedy and watching funny movies. Anything that could make me laugh or other people laugh was the most important thing in my life, because I knew that I needed to make myself happy during that rough time period.
___________, I'm sure you're a kind-hearted person and you have a lot going for you, but don't sacrifice all of that to just "fit in" for the time being. Be YOU. Be the person that YOU want to be and don't let others put you down. I know that that is easy to say, but I've been through it all and I can say that I've walked away from so many people that have put me down and I "killed them with niceness" in return.
Just focus on school, your grades and making yourself a better person. Smile a lot and just be nice to people. People cant fault you for being nice, so grin and bear it for now and just know that you're the better person in every situation where people are putting you down and that make you feel lesser than.
You are YOU for a reason. You are who you want to be and don't change for anyone. Change for yourself if you must, but change for the better. Remember that "negativity gets you nowhere." Live the life that YOU want to live and see the beauty in life every single day. Instead of remembering what went wrong in a day, remember what made you happy and what were the positive thing(s) that you witnessed or had happened to you.
Keep smiling. It puts smiles on other peoples faces that may be going through the same thing that you are. You never know!
You're an awesome person. Know it and own it. :)
Sincerely,
Jessica Cook
Merry Christmas everyone!!!!!
