Have you ever wondered: “What should I wear if I don’t want to dress like my daughter, but I also don’t want to dress like my mother? How can I look age-appropriate, yet modern and chic?”
If so, you are not alone.
Women over 40 don’t get a ton of representation on tv and social media (except J.Lo… but, she’s… J.Lo), partially because advertisers are still targeting the popular 18-34 demographic. Occasionally they stretch it to 49, but, what happens between ages 49 and death? You disappear? Give up? Immediately start wearing housecoats?

When you look good, you feel good. Research shows you might even be more productive, too...
“When you think about it, we all have had an instance of when we’re wearing something to an event or an occasion and you just don't feel good about it,” Holtz said. “It’s always kind of in the back of your mind where you’re like, ‘This really wasn't appropriate for this meeting,’ or ‘I’m being judged right now.’ That tends to ruminate in your mind, and it leads you to a level of distraction which prevents you from fully engaging in the work.”
So, does this mean that those casual Fridays in the office are a bad idea? Not exactly.
“Our findings also suggest that if you conform with the norms of the work environment, you also get a boost in productivity,” Vogel said. “So if everyone is dressed casually on Friday and you are, too, you’re more likely to feel like you’re fitting in, which is an essential motivator of human behavior.”
Temple study suggests dressing your best improves workplace productivity NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders once famously said, “If you look good, you feel good and if you feel good, you play good.” Apparently, this logic can extend beyond football. The latest research from a pair of Temple University faculty members lends support for the idea that looking good at work ...
Even if you’re not at the weight that you want to be, even if you feel like you don’t “deserve” it. You should have at least a couple of outfits that fit you well and make you feel really good, regardless of the number on the scale.
I have heard countless times that you are waiting to go shopping until you “lose the weight”. This makes me so sad because you are punishing yourself. And negative reinforcement hardly ever works.
There are so many problems with this line of thinking but I’ll address a couple of them:
1: Being kind to yourself is always best. Punishing yourself doesn’t motivate you to make better decisions about your health - it typically makes you feel crappier.
2: Wearing too tight clothes that don’t fit you or flatter you really ads to that crap sandwich.
So why not honor your body at the size that it is now - get a couple of outfits that really fit you well and make you feel good. Worst case scenario? You lose some weight and have to buy more clothes that fit.
Best case scenario? You get to feel good right now - the only moment that we are promised. ❤️
What if, when you opened up your closet, the only things in there fit you, flattered you, and supported the person you want to become?

Sometimes a part of your body is a little bigger or smaller than some of the clothes that you buy. The problem is not with you, it’s with the clothes! And you can work with it.
There is no shame in nipping something in (or letting it out) to fit your body. With the shorts in this video, my choice was to leave them as is - digging into my tummy all day - or give myself some breathing room.
I loved the shorts, so I decided to have them altered.
The result? I don’t have a waistband cutting into me all day, making me feel like my tummy is too big. Instead I get to breathe easy and think about more important things. ;)
Remember, it’s not you, it’s the clothes. You can alter THEM to work for YOU!

Does anyone need a bathing suit this summer but planning on putting off shopping until next month when many sizes and colors will be sold out?
Don't do that ;)
Here are my top tips for bathing suit shopping!
It's time: Bathing suit shopping tips and favorites! — Real style for real life. Summer is coming, and you may need a new bathing suit! If this is stressful for you, do not be afraid - I have some tips for you:
Afraid to wear jeans that fit your body versus the high waisted, big baggy jeans our daughters are wearing?
1. Teenagers are great, but you shouldn’t take style advice from one if you are 40+…
2. Trends can be fun, but don’t be afraid to wear what fits and flatters YOU.
3. Spend more on classics that fit you great and you’ll wear forever, like jeans and a great tee.
My current favorite (splurge alert!) jeans are straight leg and mid rise. 😳
Do you like them?
You can check them out along with the (splurge!) t-shirt I’m wearing here:
www.jmstylist.com/links
Have you struggled with the high waisted, baggy jeans trend and not been able to make it work for you?
ME TOO.
My new favorites are more of a mid-rise, and neither baggy nor skinny! Meet the cigarette leg that will flatter most (and make me feel great!) 😊
Did your daughter tell you skinny-ish jeans are “out”? Pay no mind. You’re not going to borrow her crop tops and Nike Air Forces anyway, so why take her jeans advice?
I hope you wear what makes you happy. If you don’t know what that is, I can help!

You wouldn’t renovate your house without taking measurements and understanding its shape and size, and you shouldn’t dress your body without understanding it’s unique shape!
Discovering my body type and understanding what works best for it was huge for me. Especially after having my babies, some things were not in the same place(!) and the clothes I used to wear weren’t quite working. 😳
Knowing that there are certain things that just won’t look great on me allowed me to let them go. There’s no rule that says you have to wear a certain neckline or certain pants or a certain anything at all!
Focusing on the clothing that WORKED for my shape did wonders for my confidence. I ditched the items that didn’t flatter me and never looked back!
If you’d like to discover YOUR body type and learn which clothes flatter your shape best, hit me up! It’s one of the first things we do in my Style Consultation, online and in real life!

A lot of you right now are looking for the perfect t-shirt but are picking up cheap, ill-fitting versions w***y nilly, thinking you’re just spending $20 here, and $20 there.
BUT. If you don’t find a great fitting tee for cheap, and you keep buying more cheap tees that don’t fit properly, what do you have? A whole bunch of MEH t-shirts that you don’t love and don’t wear.
What if you stopped buying cheap t-shirts and took that $20 here, $20 there, and spent a little bit more than you think you should, but found a t-shirt that flatters you all the time?
Consider, next time you are looking for something you really love, buying FEWER pieces of MEH items and one piece of something you LOVE.
It may not actually be more money spent! It’s just a shift in your thinking.
P.S. the same goes for jeans 😉

COZY AND COUNTRY!
I may start calling Mother jeans, “magic butt”jeans. And just give them all my money 😆
I love Rails flannels but they are expensive… this one was on sale so grab it quickly if you want one! It will sell out.
I’ve worn my Marc Fisher booties to death this winter and the suede is holding up better than I thought!
These 3 pieces are a great easy formula for a cozy winter outfit - just add jewelry!

Do YOU have a closet full of clothes but NOTHING to wear? I know how to fix that!
I know that you are frustrated spending every morning weeding through all of the clothes you don’t wear, don’t like, don’t fit, or just no longer reflect who you are.
You keep thinking that if you stop by TJ Maxx and get something new, you’ll have more to wear. But typically the opposite is true.
Adding random pieces to your wardrobe without intention just adds to the clutter in your closet (and the clutter you feel in your mind!)
If you want getting dressed in the morning to be easier, you must start by letting go of all of the clothes that no longer fit you, flatter you, or make you feel fabulous.
It’s counterintuitive, I know.
But you’re only wearing about 20% of your clothes, 80% of the time!
I can help you curate a closet that only holds clothing you love, that fits you, and makes you feel excited to get dressed.
My Closet Cleanup is the most popular service I offer. And when we’re done, I send you a customized list of items I recommend for you so that you shop SMART in the future. (No more buying just to buy!)
If you want mornings (and getting dressed) to be a breeze, click the link in my bio. 👉

Xo,

There are a lot of trends out there that don’t work for me right now… giant flowy sleeves (not great bc I carry my weight in my middle and billowy sleeves make me look like one big blob), super high waisted jeans (can nearly reach b**b height in a petite like myself - 5’4” or under), but something working GREAT for me right now is white sneakers.
Wear them with practically ANYTHING. Joggers, jeans, shorts, even a dress like me today! Today and on many Fridays I am often shopping for a client and on my feet for many hours - and sneakers SAVE my feet!
Love this trend. 😊

When your closet looks like a mini boutique, getting dressed is much easier - and more fun!
You don’t need a closet crammed with clothes to create great outfits! 🙌
People are surprised when I tell them I don’t have a lot of clothes.
Truthfully, I don’t want to spend a lot of time thinking about getting dressed.
I know you don’t either!
The best way to make the most of what you have? Clean out your closet, keeping only your favorite items that fit you, flatter you and make you feel fabulous.
Then, create a seasonal “uniform”.
This season, my uniform is sweaters, jeans, booties, and a couple pieces of jewelry.
Mornings are SO. MUCH. EASIER.
If you want to follow a similar formula, just make sure at least one piece is interesting in some way (distressed jeans or a patterned top, for example) and if you wear a lot of solid colors, mix it up with different textures and some jewelry!
Done.
If you need help sorting through your closet, simplifying your wardrobe and coming up with a uniform of your own, go to www.jmstylist.com/links to book an appointment or schedule a free 20 minute call with me to discuss!

3 WAYS TO HIDE A MUFFIN TOP!
I’ve been a muffin top owner since the birth of my first child, so I am highly experienced in this particular area. ;)
1. Wearing a blazer provides a little bit of extra coverage when we’re worried about things busting over the side of our pants particularly from the side view!
*This affordable, best-selling Amazon blazer can be found via the link in my bio
2. Pattern keeps the eye moving so that it never rests in one spot. This is a great trick to use anywhere that you have lumps and bumps you’d like to conceal.
3. Stay with me on this one: TUCK your tops. I know, you think you can’t. But, give it a try. With the right flowy material, a top will tuck into your pants and when you pull it back out a bit / blouse that s**t over the tummy area, there is no muffin top to be found. 🙌
Do you have a muffin top? What are your tricks? Tell me in the comments! 👇

3 TIPS FOR A WELL ORGANIZED CLOSET!
1. GET RID OF WHAT DOESN’T FIT OR FLATTER. It’s SO important to know what fits and flatters your individual body type.
You wouldn’t renovate your home without knowing the rooms’ shapes and measurements, would you? An enormous amount of money can be wasted buying clothes that don’t work for you. I see it all the time. When you don’t know what fits and flatters you, you buy things that you love, but they may not be loving you back… 😬
Figuring out your body type and knowing what will make you look balanced and beautiful is THE KEY to dressing in way that gives you confidence that you’ve never known before. 💃
Schedule a free 15 minute chat with me (jmstylist.com/chat) if you have any burning questions or want to know more about working together!
2. ARRANGE YOUR CLOTHES BY COLOR. This makes it easier to find what you’re looking for, and also lets you know you are buying multiples/too many of something. Plus, it makes your closet look like a boutique 😍
3. FOLLOW THE ONE IN, ONE OUT RULE:
Part of the reason closets get so out of control is that you keep shopping but you don’t get rid of the things you aren’t wearing.
A cluttered closet leads to a cluttered mind which makes getting dressed in the morning WAY harder.
Experiment with my one in / one out policy. It will help you be more careful about the things that you buy (are they worthy of your closet real estate??) and it will also help your closet from getting out of control.
Adhering to a one in / one out policy puts you in a state where you are continually upgrading everything in your closet, kind of like an art collection that is curated carefully over time. 👍
If you want to get really fancy, get matching thin velvet covered hangers that keep your clothes from sliding off AND don’t take up a lot of space in your wardrobe.*
*You can find my favorites here: www.jmstylist.com/shop-my-instagram
There is so much more to say on this topic but here’s a start: not sure if you are considered petite? If you are 5’4” and under, you are!
What does this mean? Most (non-petite) clothing will be too long for you. Sleeves, pant hems, even the hems of your tops will be too long (past the bottom of your zipper when wearing jeans = too long!) Sometimes defined waists (like on dresses) will be in the wrong place.
It’s all ok. This is what the tailor is for. Taking in, or up, a few inches here or there TRULY makes a difference in the overall look of how your clothes fit. It can make you go from looking like a little girl playing dress up in her mom’s closet to a grown ass woman honoring the body she has. 😊
Remember, it’s not you, it’s the clothes. You can alter them to work for you!
